Gawr Gura (がうる・ぐら) is an English-speaking virtual YouTuber affiliated with Hololive English. She is a member of Hololive English - Myth (stylized as HoloMyth), alongside Takanashi Kiara, Mori Calliope, Ninomae Ina'nis, and Watson Amelia. She debuted on September 13, 2020, and has since become the most subscribed Virtual YouTuber, amassing 3.9 million subscribers.[2][3][4] Her livestreams focus on entertainment, and primarily consist of Let's Plays, karaoke, and chats with the audience. Gura is often called "Same-chan" in Japan, same meaning shark.[5]

Career

Cover Corporation announced auditions for English speakers from April 23 to May 24 of 2020, following the global success of its Japanese VTuber lineup.[6][7] The design of Gawr Gura was illustrated by Amashiro Natsuki,[8][9] and the original modeling was done by Shin Umiushi.[10]

Gura's Twitter activities first began on September 9, 2020.[11] The first YouTube live video was broadcast at 6 AM JST on September 13.[12] Approximately 45,000 people viewed her debut stream live, and the video gained over 800,000 views in the span of three days.[13] "Gawr Gura" was selected as one of the top 100 most popular internet words that year on Niconico and Pixiv.[14] On November 28, she was listed in the Niconico Japanese Internet Pop 100, and was ranked 99th.[15] The channel reached 1 million subscribers on October 22, 2020.[16][17] This is the fastest record among virtual YouTubers and she is the third VTuber and the fourth VTuber channel to achieve it, right behind Kizuna AI and Kaguya Luna [jp].[16] On January 18, the number of YouTube channel subscribers surpassed 2 million, making her the second VTuber to reach 2 million subscriptions, second only to Kizuna AI.[18][19] She celebrated with a 2 million subscriber song on January 23.[20] On May 7, Gura unveiled a new outfit,[21][22] and the highest number of simultaneous viewers reached 194,280, breaking the VTuber record originally held by Sakura Miko (about 145,000).[23][24] A more formal dress was revealed on December 12.[25] Her first original song, "REFLECT", was released on June 21, 2021.[26][27] On June 30, 5:01 a.m. (UTC+0), she reached 2.97 million subscribers on July 1, surpassing Kizuna AI as the most subscribed VTuber on YouTube.[28][29][30][31][32] On July 4, she became the first virtual YouTuber to reach 3 million subscribers.[3][33][34]

On July 2021, it was announced that a Gawr Gura Nendoroid figure would be produced.[35][36] On August 6, the Nendoroid figurine was announced and pre-orders were opened.[37] On March 18, 2022, following her 3D debut, it was announced a life-sized figure of Gura would be auctioned at an expo for charity.[38][39]

On April 25, 2022, Cover Corporation announced the Hololive Meet project, featuring all the talent from across Holostars and Hololive Production and aims to accelerate the expansion of Hololive Production into international markets[40] and named Gawr Gura, Tokino Sora and Ayunda Risu as ambassadors for the project.

On September 9, 2020, Gura posted her first tweet with the word "a".[41] On September 13, her first live broadcast was delayed and her first words were "a" (pronounced /a/, as in "cat").[18] Later, the broadcast was interrupted due to equipment problems, leaving tens of thousands of users typing "a" in the chat room, waiting for the broadcast to resume.[42] "a" quickly became an internet meme, which likely contributed to Gura's fast success.[42] Only forty days after her debut, she had reached one million subscribers, becoming the first Hololive VTuber to do so.[43]

  • Cameo appearance in a Taco Bell commercial that aired on July 23, 2021, as part of a sponsorship for their Nacho Fries product.[44][45] According to creative director Daniel Chen, Taco Bell is the first American company to feature a VTuber.[46]
