Ensemble? Stars?

[edit]

@Yevaraina: in this edit you introduced confusing language to the article. You indicate that Mohanlal is the star, deleting everybody from the |starring= parameter of the infobox, but you left the statement that there is an ensemble cast. Do you know what an ensemble cast is? When a film has an ensemble cast, there is typically not a singular more-important character. In an ensemble, all of the chief characters have equal importance. So your elevation of Mohanlal as a "star" of the film would conflict with there being an ensemble.

I've flagged the content for clarification. If anyone familiar with the film could address it, that would be helpful. I also think the number of actors listed in the ensemble description is a bit ridiculous. There's like 15 people there. Who are the most important characters in the film? Assuming Mohanlal plays the lead, these would be supporting actors. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:50, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Original language of production: MALAYALAM

[edit]

There has been a recent edit which says the movie was simultaneously filmed in Tamil language too along with Malayalam and the latest interview of the director was quoted.DilliKaShehzaada (talk) 02:10, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrpKzGAaQME . In this interview he clearly states that only "some shots" were simultaneously filmed in Tamil. (Timestamp: 13:09 and 13:16. Hence the original language of production remains ONLY Malayalam, since the Tamil version is predominantly dubbed barring "a few shots".DilliKaShehzaada (talk) 02:10, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You conveniently trimmed the portion where he clearly says that "TAMIL TOO IS ORIGINAL" (at 12.53 - 13:03). All scenes need not to be shot in Tamil, only the portions containing dialogues need to be shot. In other interviews too he has clearly mentioned that both Tamil and Malayalam are original. See this interview, he clearly says "We have dubbed it in other languages but we shot each scene twice. Once in Malayalam and then in Tamil". And in this interview: he says it is "coming out in Malayalam and Tamil in the original versions, and dubbed in Hindi, Telugu and Kannada". So your claim is false. Both TAMIL and Malayalam are original.--2409:4073:390:7577:5D28:EEDB:376E:F8B3 (talk) 08:33, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207: So officially this is a bilingual. What is the criteria for getting a straight / non-dubbed CBFC certificate. Prabhu's character is a Tamil one, so technically all his scenes are in Tamil. But they appear that way in the Malayalam version. It doesn't seem like there were any reshoots based on the lip-sync of the Tamil trailer. Is the criteria just to reshoot one scene? After watching the movie in Tamil, there is no lip sync (a bit disappointed). DareshMohan (talk) 08:46, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DareshMohan: There's always a grey area but there must be some criteria surely. Else, the makers would simply mark every dubbed version as bilingual to get tax benefits, eligibility for state awards etc. There's no lip sync by non-Telugu actors in Saaho and Radhe Shyam also, so its difficult to arrive at an objective conclusion.
For some actors speaking in a different language, we have the example of Sardar Udham where CBFC says "Hindi, party in English." So looks like CBFC is considering that case as well -- Ab207 (talk) 09:17, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207: The director says "sila shots" (some shots) were shot in Tamil at 13:09 here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrpKzGAaQME). Any objection in changing the wording from simultaneously shot to partially reshot since only 1 percent or less was shot in Tamil. DareshMohan (talk) 04:45, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DareshMohan and DilliKaShehzaada: As per the above interview, wording may be changed to partial reshot while Tamil will remain in the infobox as is. This seems to be a reasonable middleground. -- Ab207 (talk) 05:05, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Historical reality

[edit]

On a casual reading of Malabar Manual written by William Logan, and a detailed reading of the attached commentary, there are these bits of information that may be mentioned.

The incidences are part of the antiquity of South and North Malabar.

Individuals from Travancore making a film with the belief that it is from their own history has some issues. It is similar to individuals from Romania or Albania creating films on British colonialism when Great Britain was part of the European Union.

Both the Malabars had practically nothing to do with the Travancore area in the concerned historical period. Even the language was different. Travancore could have been Tamil speaking, while the Malabars had a language called Malayalam, which was much different from modern day Malayalam.

Malabar itself was a package of around 32 small-time kingdoms or principalities.

Calicut was a very small kingdom. Just north of Calicut was the area ruled by the Kurumbranad kingdom (Badagara / Kadathanad) area. And near to Tellicherry, there was the Kottayam rule. Beyond to the north was the Kolathiri-family (Cannanore) ruled area. Wynad was not under the Calicut king. Just south of Calicut was the Velathri family ruled areas (Walluvanad).

To the east was Palghat, which again was not under Calicut.

Calicut’s historical significance was that it gave full support to Egyptian pepper export business. This business was done by the Arab sea-traders.

Calicut king himself could have been from the fishermen community, even though the family slowly must have entered into the Kshatriaya bloodline.

The Kunhali Marakkar family seems to be from the Badagara (Kottakkal) area. No mention that they were from Cochin was found in the book. It is possible that they were more connected to the Badagara king than to Calicut. Such a mention is seen in Malabar Manual.

This family was a sort of protector of the Arabian pepper export trade, across the Arabian Sea. As such, they cannot be mentioned as any kind of Sea captains of the king of Calicut.

It is most probable that they were from some Arabian bloodline. They did have under them, a lot of local Mappillas who were converts from the various local populations. The word Marakkar, however, is seen used by some members of the local fishermen community.

The entry of the Portuguese was a big blow to the Egyptian pepper export trade. This was to lead to the fight between the Arab side and the Portuguese. The king of Calicut had more or less very little de facto power or say in the events.

How the Portuguese – Arab mutual antipathy sprang up is very clearly narrated in Malabar Manual. The fight was basically between two different groups of trading interests.

Even though there might have been events or skirmishes in which the Marakkar sea-fighters did defeat the Portuguese in some sea-fights, in the historical flow of events, the Portuguese dislodged the Arab pepper trade and took over the pepper export-to-Europe trade.

They were dislodged by the Dutch after some 100 years. Later the French came to occupy that position. However, the trade was ultimately dominated by the English East India Company. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.198.160.149 (talk) 02:53, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Box office collection

[edit]

Malayala Sahityam, Jupitus Smart: Hi. Is the source for the box office collection of the article reliable, given that it states a random Twitter account as its source? — JosephJames 05:58, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot find any better source, though in reality most of these box office numbers are hyped up and sourced from supposed analysts on Twitter, the only difference being this acknowledges its source as Twitter. Feel free to remove the part if you feel the figures are way off mark. Jupitus Smart 17:28, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Jupitus Smart: I feel the problem is that there's no real way to know if "the figures are way off mark". Also, the source mentions a weekend Kerala figure of 19 cr and an opening day worldwide figure of 20 cr, but nowhere is the 145 cr mentioned. That figure might actually be way off mark. — JosephJames 21:22, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I didn't notice the discussion. If the source is a random Twitter account, the information is definitely not reliable. Also, the Twitter account claims to post the box office collection from Kerala theatres alone, and not the total worldwide gross, which is to be included in the infobox. I am removing the figure. Please feel free to revert if there is any objection. Malayala Sahityam (talk) 17:31, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the last line of the section says that the film was a box office disaster and quotes a source that doesn't say that anywhere. In fact, it says the opposite! Amarfsf (talk) 18:46, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
