Alien: Romulus is a 2024 American science fiction horror film. Directed by Fede Álvarez, who co-wrote it with Rodo Sayagues, the film was produced by Scott Free Productions and Brandywine Productions. It is the seventh installment in the Alien franchise and serves as a standalone interquel set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).[3] It stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

The film was first released in France, Italy and Finland on August 14, 2024, and is scheduled to be theatrically released by 20th Century Studios on August 16, 2024. It received generally positive reviews from critics.

Premise

Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986),[4] the story concerns a group of young space colonists who, while scavenging a derelict space station, come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.[5]

Cast

  • Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine, an orphan and resident of Jackson's Star mining colony
  • David Jonsson as Andy, an android programed by Rain's father to act as her brother
  • Archie Renaux as Tyler, Rain's ex-boyfriend
  • Isabela Merced as Kay, Tyler's younger sister
  • Spike Fearn as Bjorn, Tyler's cousin
  • Aileen Wu as Navarro, a pilot and Bjorn's girlfriend

Production

After the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by the Walt Disney Company, it was officially confirmed at the 2019 CinemaCon that future Alien films were in development.[6] In March 2022, it was announced that Fede Álvarez would write and direct the first film after pitching his own story, and was said to be "unconnected" to the previous films in the franchise, with the project set to be released on Hulu in the United States.[7] It was later announced that the film would take place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), with some technical crew members returning from the latter film,[4] and visual effects from Image Engine, returning from Alien: Ore (2019).[8][9]

By November, Cailee Spaeny had entered negotiations to star.[10] In March 2023, Isabela Merced was set to co-star opposite Spaeny.[11] Later that month, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu joined the cast.[12] Principal photography took place in Budapest from March 9 to July 3, 2023.[a] The film was shot chronologically and utilized practical effects.[17] Its score was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch.[18]

Release

Alien: Romulus was originally scheduled to be released on Hulu,[7] but was switched to a theatrical release shortly before filming commenced.[19] The film was first released in France, Sweden and Italy on August 14, 2024 and is set to screen at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on August 15, 2024 for its UK premiere.[20] It is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios in the United States and United Kingdom the following day on August 16.[20]

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of 94 critics gave the film a positive review, with a 6.8 out of 10 average rating. Its consensus states, "Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises."[21] According to Metacritic, the film received "generally favorable" reviews based on a weighted average score of 63 out of 100 from 36 critics.[22]
