A professor running some student editing thing?
This is the AGF way to look at it, though I also see LLMs in use, at least in the summaries, but User talk:Noah Theodore Johnson, whose user page says they are a professor, has created a few articles where most accounts who edited it are accounts with nearly no edits elsewhere and usually who have edited in multiple of their created articles. Could someone who knows how these things should be ran and/or who has more time to investigate than me, give this a look? – 2804:F1...ED:16CD (talk) 05:44, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Erm, I still don't have time to do more investigation, but more investigation let me find out that one of the involved accounts, CronoWiki, is checkuser blocked in pt wiki as a sock of an user who's been socking since 2022 (who does not seem to have a sock case in this wiki). What if a reference link no longer works and the document can't be found? Do I remove the reference, or make a note that the article can no longer be found? I see several of these issues on a page I'm editing. EllieNowels (talk) 19:39, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Help adding name in a family tree
I would like to add the names of the descendants of Buenaventura Báez former president of the Dominican Republic.

Hi, we had a page deleted but we want to see if it can be reinstated HSELLC (talk) 21:59, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Who is "we", and what article are you referring to? 331dot (talk) 22:01, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- The article was for Jerry A. Greenberg and it was deleted in 2008. I tried to reach out to the user who deleted the page but haven't had any luck with a response. HSELLC (talk) 17:22, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HSELLC You might try reading Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. Shantavira|feed me 09:32, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HSELLC, User:Kingboyk, who deleted the article, has not edited since 2022, and is thus unlikely to respond to your message. I second Shantavira's suggestion to look at requests for undeletion, but, as the article was speedily deleted under criterion A7, it will likely need significant additional work before being suitable for inclusion. If you intend to try to improve it, I suggest reading Help:Your first article. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 15:56, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HSELLC: - I've had a look at the article as it was before deletion (as an admin I can do this). What there was amounted to an unreferenced article about a living person. Deletion was correct per our policy on biographies on living people. That said, why not try writing an article in draftspace - Draft:Jerry A. Greenberg. If you can demonstrate notability by verifiability by reliable sources, it will eventually be promoted to mainspace. Mjroots (talk) 18:11, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Configure User:MiszaBot to archive signpost
I currently have User:MiszaBot to archive my talk page at 90d intervals. I would like to archive Signposts every week. Is there a way to configure it, or another bot , to archive signpost on a weekly interval?
Expected Outcome
Only the latest signpost is shown on my talk page. all earlier signpost entries are archived. Tonymetz 💬 23:31, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

- @Tonymetz It may not be what you want but I watchlist the page WP:Wikipedia_Signpost/Templates/Issue. That gets updated (once) every time a new Signpost comes out, so I notice that it has and I don't bother having the actual posting onto my Talk page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:43, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Help Edit an article
Is there anyone who can help me edit this article I have created? I am still learning and I need help from the community. This is the link to the article. Especially, I think the article has citation problems that I do not know how to resolve. Celestin Kanyama Sarah Biryomumaisho (talk) 09:06, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- WP:Teahouse is always there for new editors, but let me just jump in for a second.
- Well, I'm sure the problem is that there are SEVEN footnotes after the first paragraph of "Sanctions" section. This is quite an citation overkill. You would want to cut the footnotes down to the minimum. ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 09:29, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Sarah Biryomumaisho Although you have an excessive number of citations attached to one sentence, the sources themselves seem reliable (except current #14) so why not look at each and expand the content of the article if they have further details about Kanyama? Alternatively, if they only briefly mention him, then why not just drop that source? For example, the Guardian citation mentions his name once but is mainly about other people, so I think you can remove it. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:36, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. This is very helpful. Sarah Biryomumaisho (talk) 17:58, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
Template for pop-science oriented page
The page Whirlwind contains two sources to pop-science articles and nothing else. It ends up covering very surface-level information that is also (from my understanding) bordering incorrect, and goes over much of the same information from Tornado and Tornadogenesis under a different name. A simple comparison can be made between Whirlwind and Tornadogenesis; see the quality and types of sources specifically. I was wondering, as I cannot expand the article right now, is there a template for pop-science articles in need of major changes to become wiki quality? If not, is there one I can use in the place of one? GeorgeMemulous (talk) 17:28, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

- If the information is not public, you can email the oversight team WP:OVERSIGHT. However, the edit summaries say the information is "not authorized", Wikipedia does not need permission or authorization to include public information in an article. RudolfRed (talk) 00:19, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi IP 2600:8800:611F:1100:445A:E2DF:A7CD:BE79. Perhaps you'll find the information in Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Relationship between the subject, the article, and Wikipedia. Wikipedia article content is supposed to only reflect what can be verified through citations to reliable sources, and any content that doesn't can, in principle, be removed. After looking at the article, I've decided to hide content in the main infobox about your wife and children per WP:BLPSOURCES and WP:BLPNAME so that it's inclusion can be further discussed at Talk:Eric Stoltz#Wife and children. You're welcome to participate in that discussion if you want, but before you do you might want to take a close look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest because it contains information you might find helpful. In addition, I'm assuming in good faith that you're the Eric Stoltz the article is written about and not someone pretending to be him; however, please understand that there's no way for anyone editing Wikipedia to verify this to be case simply based on an IP address or your word. So, if you plan on participating in the discussion on the article's talk page, you might consider registering for an account. You can use your real name as your username if you want; if you do, you should look at WP:REALNAME and WP:REALWORLD to make sure that's something you want to do. Given who you are, you might even consider having your identity verified by the Wikimedia Volunteer Response Team (VRT) to make it clear to others that you're indeed the same Eric Stoltz. Regardless of which username you choose or whether you continue to edit as an IP address, you should take a look at WP:DECLARECOI for reference and consider having your identity verified to avoid others thinking you're just someone screwing around. If you have any general questions about the above or anything else about Wikipedia, feel free to ask them here at the Help Desk or at the Wikipedia Teahouse. You can also seek assistance at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard if you want.Lastly, please try to understand that Wikipedia is collaborative editing project whose participants are all volunteers, and there's no central editorial board per se overseeing and assessing edits made to articles. This means that sometimes edits (like the ones you made) are reverted because they don't appear to have been made in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Nobody (even the subjects of articles) in particular owns an article or has any claim of final editorial control over it, and disagreements over article content are typical expected to be resolved through discussion in accordance with Wikipedia:Dispute resolution instead of Wikipedia:Edit warring; so, if you have further concerns any content written about you on Wikipedia, you probably be better off following the advice given in WP:COIADVICE instead of trying to take care of things yourself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Request for Page Removal - Aurora Threats
Dear Wikipedia Team, I am writing once again to formally request the removal of my Wikipedia entry. I have now engaged a professional team to assist in setting up an accurate and well-sourced article that reflects my career and achievements. At this point, we believe that removing the current entry is the best course of action to ensure the new content is built from a clean slate. We have made previous attempts to provide concise, accurate, and verifiable information, but I would prefer that our team handle the process from here. I kindly ask for your assistance in this matter.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Hamley24 (talk) 00:22, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not censored. Any information that is reliably cited will remain in the article. See the guidelines for conflict-of-interest writing here. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 00:24, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- After checking the article Aurora Threats, I understand that the editing is not to remove any reliable harmful information, but at the same time I don't think the article is "bad" enough to warrant WP:TNT, the formal process for starting all over. Still, your team must disclose paid editing, see WP:PAID. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 00:27, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Each member of your "team" will need their own account and they should make it very clear that they are different people. Your team can't have exclusive control over the article. 331dot (talk) 00:49, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Request for Removal of My Website
Hello, I am writing to request the removal of my website, Menlypedia.xyz, from Wikipedia’s blacklist. My website is not an adult or spammy site. It primarily focuses on topics related to history, science, and SEO. I believe the site may have been mistakenly categorized or blacklisted. Menlypedia is dedicated to providing informative content, and I ensure that all articles are researched and adhere to high standards. I would like to contribute to Wikipedia and provide my site as a reliable source for relevant topics. I request that the blacklist entry be reviewed and reconsidered. Could you please guide me on how I can proceed with this issue? I’m happy to provide additional information or clarification if needed.
My contact email is: [redacted] Thank you very much for your time and consideration. 2400:1A00:BD11:1368:8939:89E2:2BBF:1E3 (talk) 05:54, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Per WP:USERG, your website is not a useful source on WP. For the same reason, we don't use WP as a source on WP either. Since SEO is your interest, I assume you know WP uses nofollow. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:39, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- First, your website is not on any blacklist. The entire .xyz domain is on the blacklist.
- Second, you are asking at the wrong place. MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist is the place to request poking a hole in the blacklist, but you did not make a valid request so it was removed.
- Third, we never entertain requests from the website owner to remove from the blacklist or whitelist a site.
- Finally, there is no possible reason why any Wikipedia would have a link to your site. It is a wiki, and therefore not considered a reliable source. ~Anachronist (talk) 07:23, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Anachronist, your last point--really? The "External links" section was, I thought, for resources that are relevant to the subject and seem to have some value, but don't qualify as reliable sources. They can thus include "official" sites, "profiles", interviews and so forth. (NB I'm not saying they should include these, merely that these aren't automatically disqualified.) If this is indeed so, I don't see why a source should be impermissible in EL sections just because it's user-generated. (I know nothing about this particular website, and have the impression that most user-generated material is junk.) 60.47.212.235 (talk) 10:23, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- While an official website can be used to cite what that person/organization states, a wiki is inherently unreliable as it is open to editing by anyone for any reason. So there is no validity in including such a site in the External Links of an article. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 13:50, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- If you have a look at the website, it's an underfunded project started by a couple of teenagers who seem to be making a good-faith effort to provide well-sourced information about a handful of topics, the purpose being apparently SEO for the citations. Overall the content there isn't much different from the content on Wikipedia, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're using Wikipedia articles as a starting point. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:45, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Citations when copy-pasting from another article?
When copy-pasting a tidbit from one article into another, do I need to search the original article for the relevant citation and carry that over as well, or is just linking the original article good enough?
I'm asking this following recent edits to the "In popular culture" section on Tardigrade, since there aren't very many in-line citations in the article I took the trivia from, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
~Puella Mortua~ Signed from the grave. (séance me!) 14:32, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- You should copy the citation, too - you have no way of knowing that it won't eventually be removed from the other article. (And if what you're copying has enough creativity to be copyrightable, you need to attribute it - see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.) —Cryptic 14:47, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- What Cryptic said. But you don't usually need to "search the article": the citation will be there with the text, and if you use the Source editor, you can copy the text plus citation.
- The only time this won't work is if the original uses a named source defined elsewhere. In the source editor this will appear as something like
<ref name="fred"/>
, instead of<ref>text of citation</ref>
) in which case you'll need to find where there is a<ref name="fred"> text of citation</ref>
and copy that whole citation in place of the empty one. ColinFine (talk) 11:38, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Puella Mortua: When you copy a reference like this, then if at all possible you should also actually read the reference itself to confirm that it really does contain the cited information. You can then update the "access-date" parameter in the cite template. Basically, when you do that copy-paste you are accepting responsibility as a Wikipedia editor that the information is verifiable. You cannot know for sure that the original editor did not make a mistake, and we need to avoid propagating mistakes. Also, if the ref is online, we cannot know that an updated version still supports the information. -Arch dude (talk) 13:16, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

How to add Percentage Bar for Goals on Userpage?
I was wondering how to add percentage bars for goals on my Userpage (example:User:NegativeMP1's goals section on indie video games). In this case, I want it to be on this. Also, to those who responded to my previous question on the reliability of the Infopedia in September, thank you for you response! I unfortunately forgot about it but it's still in my mind. Imbluey2. - Imbluey2, I have been editing Wikipedia quite actively for over 15 years and have never once heard of
percentage bars for goals
on a userpage. If someone has invented this metric (who?), then please explain why you think that it is important, as opposed to being ignored. Cullen328 (talk) 06:39, 5 October 2024 (UTC) - It looks like they're using Template:Progression. If you look at the source for User:NegativeMP1/goals you can see more detail. I agree with Cullen though, that this appears to be something they put together for themselves rather than any sort of objective or 'Wikipedia-approved' metric. - Ah, then perhaps I should've asked them on how they did it instead of asking here (this space is more for articles than userpages I suppose). Anyways, thank you both for your help! Imbluey2. Please ping me so that I get notified of your response 06:57, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
Heat
Wiki doesn’t list “dead heat” as a usage 82.2.124.144 (talk) 06:51, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean. Dead heat is an article. DonIago (talk) 06:56, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- ...and the word used there bears no relation to heat. Shantavira|feed me 08:07, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know what point you're trying to make? DonIago (talk) 15:48, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- I think the poster wanted Heat or Heat (disambiguation) to mention Dead heat. It certainly doesn't belong in Heat which is about energy. And Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a dictionary. Heat (disambiguation) is a disambiguation page for articles a user might want when they seach for "heat" alone. It's not for every expression which includes the word "heat". If users want the meaning in dead heat then they will proably search for "dead heat", or seach for "tie" or "draw" and find Tie (draw) which mentions and links dead heat in Tie (draw)#Racing sports. Something terrible has happened to all of the references in this article - please assist. Thank you. Srbernadette (talk) 07:06, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- That was weird. Looks like the script broke for a few minutes but it seems to have been resolved. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 07:29, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
Creation of Wikipedia Page
How to create a Wikipedia Page? 2405:201:33:ED23:3D0E:A8EC:2BE3:BFFA (talk) 16:46, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello.
- The guide is at your first article.
- My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft. apostrophe S
In episodes of Bonanza, I've seen...of Wade Hollister's (John Ericson) gang, AND of Wade Hollister (John Ericson)'s gang,. Which is correct? I feel if the () was not there the 's would be for the inserted STAR name. DMc75771 (talk) 18:58, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- This is probably better suited to a sprawling forumlike thread at WP:RD/L, but in the interest of brevity: one form or the other may have been studio policy in credit rolls / contractual something or other; if the Character Name (Actor Portraying) is treated as a single grammatical term, putting the apostrophe after the closing bracket isn't strictly incorrect despite appearances, and actually kinda reads clearer, for me anyway. - I may not of explained properly. In reading the summaries of Bonanza episodes I found the apostrope after the (Star Name)'s. It didn't look right to me. DMc75771 (talk) 19:18, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
