Question from ThothOfTheSouth (03:53, 25 October 2024)
Hello dear mentor, I have a few pages I would like to edit but they require a quite thorough overall. What is the Wikipedia way to address this? For example Cloth_modeling was written as a course exercise and can benefit from a big rewrite. Should I create a new page, maybe 'cloth simulation' and work on in unbothered? Should I incrementally change the current page and explain in the talk page why I am doing what I am doing? Should I propose a skeleton to the new layout of the talk page?... The advice I am looking for is mostly at the policy level - what is the wikipedia way to do it? Thank you! --ThothOfTheSouth (talk) 03:53, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Wikipedia says to be bold when editing pages, meaning if you think it should be changed, change it! If you can improve the page I'd recommend going ahead and starting with the improvements, if your changes are reverted or if you want to discuss it with other editors first you should ask about it on the talk page to get consensus. I wouldn't make a new page as it would likely be deleted as a duplicate. Hope this helps, Encoded Talk 💬 06:42, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- I would recommend incrementally changing the page though, as it makes it easier for other editors to see what you've changed. Encoded Talk 💬 06:42, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Likkle Talawah (02:06, 28 October 2024)
Hello, I would like to add some informtion to this page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_genocides It only lists the Trail of Tears, but not the entire genocide of Native Americans from 1492–1900. According to geographers from University College London, the colonization of the Americas by Europeans killed so many people, approximately 55 million people, or 90% of local populations. We need to include this important information. There was a systemic slaughter of Native Americans. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.se.edu/native-american/wp-content/uploads/sites/49/2019/09/A-NAS-2017-Proceedings-Smith.pdf --Likkle Talawah (talk) 02:06, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, since this page is extended confirmed protected if you don't have that permission level you'll have to create an edit request on the article's talk page to request an editor who has that permission level to include it in the article. Hope this helps, Encoded Talk 💬 07:48, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
move request -- with COI
Hi! I saw your comment here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Global_Citizen_Awards#c-Encoded-20241026094400-Remove_inaccurate_information_and_revise_title -- regarding my request that the page be moved, while acknowledging my COI as a staffer for the organization. I reviewed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_moves but I'm not seeing how this move request should be made. Can you please provide me some guidance? I'd be grateful! Thanks. Zackbaddorf (talk) 15:34, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, apologies for not giving any more information - since you used the template to request the move it has been listed for others to make comments so there's nothing else you need to do as the request has been made, I'm not 100% sure on the procedure but if nobody opposes it in a few days I'll have a read up and see if I can process the move for you. Apologies for declining the COI request, unfortunately that's not something that can be done by us there. Encoded Talk 💬 20:18, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Encoded! Much appreciated. FWIW, I'm wondering whether it should actually be "Global Citizen Awards (Atlantic Council)" per the disambiguation policy (under Article_titles) since there are a ton of other "Global Citizen Awards." I'd welcome your recommendation on that too. Zackbaddorf (talk) 11:17, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'd personally be happy either way, I'd suggest putting a message on the talk page with the requested move suggesting that name as well and we can see what people think. Encoded Talk 💬 16:12, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Encoded! Appreciate your help navigating this. I'm still a newbie here. 108.48.200.194 (talk) 12:58, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- No worries, I've had a look into the requested move procedures and since I've supported the move, I'm unable to close and complete the request, so we'll have to wait for somebody else to do so. Encoded Talk 💬 20:52, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Timber888 on Wikipedia:Writing better articles (17:03, 29 October 2024)
Warm greetings. I received a pryvt msg on twitterX paid profile./. Individual then asks ‘why do I have someone logging my ip address?’ 🔺👁️♠️ --Timber888 (talk) 17:03, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Timber888, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this, are you able to clarify what you need help with? Many thanks, Encoded Talk 💬 20:18, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Heartfilled
Dear Encoded,
I write as a newbie COI Editor (Heartfilled) seeking clarity. Your ECOI "Not Done for Now" banner on my edit request for the page Thandeka asked for clarification on what changes I was requesting. I think perhaps I chose the wrong format for this first attempt to specify my request, in that I enclosed it in an invisible note preceding the newly edited paragraph. Naturally, I want to avoid this error in the future. Three questions:
- What would have been the correct way to specify the change in "Change x to y" format?
- Is my response to the banner sufficient to remove it and reinstate the request?
- What is the process to reinstate?
Thanks in advance,
Heartfilled Heartfilled (talk) 17:29, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Heartfilled, apologies for not providing any additional information!
- The best way is to say something like
please can the paragraph starting with "..." in the X section be replaced with "..."
orplease can you add "..." at the end of the X section
orplease can the paragraph starting with "..." in the X section be removed
, or something else along them lines is all ok! - Would you be able to provide an example of what you'd like the content to look like? I get the points being made but if you're able to lay it out in a paragraph that you'd like to be included in the page that would be amazing! There's quite a few requests to go to so we don't always have the time to write and format the exact paragraph, so it being there ready to go is a massive help!
- Click the [edit] button on the section's heading (or [edit source] at the top of the page) -> where it says {{Edit COI|D|Unclear request}} change this to
{{Edit COI}}
(sometimes it appears with different parameters after the Edit COI bit such as "ans=y", but just remove them all so it looks like the green one)
- The best way is to say something like
- I have also noticed that the request in question doesn't have any sources associated with it, you can use the book itself as a source, I'd just mention this in a reply (if you have the ISBN for it that'd be great too, if not I'll try to find it!)
- Encoded Talk 💬 21:33, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, Encoded!
- Please let me know if I've missed the mark:
- I interpret (1.) to say that I needn't specify changes in an invisible note, and I can just include them in the body of the request.
- I interpret (2.) to say that there's something in the proposed change that doesn't conform to Wikipedia or encyclopedic style. I intended the the items in the numbered list to stand, and the replacement paragraph is formatted as intended. The current version incorporates numbered items in the running text, and I thought it more clear to use a numbered list, because the ideas presented in the book follow a sequential progression. To say it differently, everything from "In Love Beyond Belief" to "the letters of Paul." is formatted as intended. Please advise if there is another issue with the replacement paragraph that I'm missing.
- I interpret (3.) to say that I can remove the EditCOIIDI request by following your instructions.
- With your confirmation, I'll remove the "Not Done Yet" banner. Will this automatically place my EditCOI request back in the queue? Heartfilled (talk) 21:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Heartfilled, you are correct with your points there, I was confused initially and have just read the invisible note, I now understand the format and that is fine, I'd just make sure the notes are all visible in future so that reviewers can see them, you could maybe use bold/italics if you'd like to differentiate it from the actual content you want adding. I've put a comment on the request making the note visible.
- I've reset your request banner so it's back in the queue now. I'm unable to process the request right now, but hopefully someone else will get back to you soon - if not, I'll process it when I'm next available. Thanks, Encoded Talk 💬 21:35, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for resetting the banner — I also added a reference to the book as requested. I'm glad the editing review can proceed.
- With gratitude,
- @Heartfilled Heartfilled (talk) 22:47, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

I think I've tagged you in a reply at Talk:Stephan DuCharme with some copyediting changes, but I wanted to message here anyway to say thank you. I've been watching the queue numbers for COI edit requests while waiting for someone to pick my suggestions up, and the work you and other responders have done to reduce the backlog is amazing - I hope you know that it doesn't go unappreciated, thank you for helping maintain the balance and assisting those who want to follow the rules.
