Toll Domestic Forwarding (TDF) is a division of the Toll Group. Toll Domestic Forwarding has four business units: Toll Intermodal; Toll New Zealand; Toll Shipping; and Toll Tasmania. Toll is Australia’s largest mover of freight.[1] Toll New Zealand is New Zealand’s largest multimodal freight mover.[2] In March 2012, Toll New Zealand reported they moved more than 2.9 million consignments and in excess of 4.2 million tonnes of freight per annum.[3] They also reported they served more than 4,000 customers and employed more than 1,600 full time staff.[4]


For the financial year 2011/2012 Toll Domestic Forwarding had sales of $1150.9 million and total revenue of $56.7 million.[5] The result was solid despite flat industry wide volumes.[6] Gains were made in the recovery of Toll Tasmania which were off set against losses in the Australian refrigerated linehaul and warehousing operations, which were sold in July 2012.[7] The half yearly reporting of results to the end of December 2012 indicated Toll Intermodal benefitted from significant contract wins including work with BlueScope, BHP Billiton, NCI Packaging and Kmart and retention of key customer contracts although earnings were impacted by operational inefficiencies associated with the major terminal redevelopment at Moolabin. [8] Toll’s investments in rail terminals for Toll Intermodal were reported to be progressing well and the Moolabin redevelopment in Brisbane was expected to be completed in mid 2013.[9] The new Kewdale rail terminal development in Perth was opened in early 2013.[10] Toll New Zealand grew revenue and earnings, with a full six month contribution from the acquisition of Northern Southland in October 2011 and from new contracts. [11] Toll ANL Bass Strait Shipping increased revenue and earnings due to growth from existing customers and improved internal productivity, while revenue was further boosted by increases in rates to recover wharfage and channel fee increases imposed by Port of Melbourne Corporation.[12] Toll Tasmania had a strong result driven by growth from existing customers and new contracts and the development of the Brighton site in Hobart for Toll Tasmania will commence in 2013. [13]
