Vidyut Jammwal (born 10 December 1980), popularly known as "The New Age Action Hero of Bollywood" [4]and "India's New Action God"[5] is an Indian film actor and martial artist.[3] . He has worked in Bollywood, Kollywood and Tollywood films.[6] He is a trained martial artist since the age of three in the art form called kalaripayattu.[7]
Early Life
His journey and experiences have been exceptionally unique and diverse - with him being one of three children born in an army officer's home, having lived across various parts of India owing to his father's transferable job [8]and training in martial arts from an ashram in Kerala since he was three years old which was run by his mother. [9]While kids his age were busy with outdoor games, he was mastering body combat, kolthari (using long sticks) and angathari (using metal weapons). He has traveled the world and trained with some of the finest martial artists and honed the skills from various art forms, all of which find their base in Kalaripayattu, deemed as the mother of all martial art forms. [10]. After earning a strong degree in martial arts, Jammwal traveled to over 25 countries where he performed live action shows, something beyond any regular showcase ever done before.[11]. He moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in films in 2008 and after pursuing a brief stint in modeling, he landed his debut role in Nishikant Kamat's Force after one audition and was chosen among thousands of other applicants for the role of Vishnu. [12]
Career
Given his elaborate expertise and know-how with martial arts, he has committed himself to stunt and action training in the world of cinema. His first Bollywood outing Force, a remake of the Tamil film Kaaka Kaaka, alongside John Abraham.[13] gave audiences a sneak peak into the kind of action they can expect from Vidyut. It earned him a clean sweep at the awards that year with him bagging all the awards for Most Promising Debut - Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.[14] IIFA Award for Best Male Debut [15][16]
He subsequently played supporting roles in the Telugu films Shakti and Oosaravelli, both starring NTR.[17] In 2012, Jammwal made his debut in Tamil cinema with Billa II, as the antagonist opposite Ajith Kumar. For his role, he received critical appreciation.[18] He recently worked on another Tamil film Thuppakki, opposite actor Vijay which became a blockbuster.[19] He also received an award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role in SIIMA Awards for the film.
This commitment to action saw a whole other high as he raised the bar of action in films in India with his second film COMMANDO[20] where he showcased unique and never-before-seen sequences focused on high octane, realistic combat based action, all that he performed himself! With just the trailer launch, Vidyut created quite a stir and amassed over a million hits within a week of the trailer launch[21].
Although the film received a mixed critical reception,[22] Jammwal and his action earned him great reviews and also made him a hero for the mass, single screen audiences - (India's God of Action being one of the titles) who were thrilled to see a real man among the chocolate boys! Noted critic Taran Adarsh mentioned in his review - "COMMANDO clearly belongs to Vidyut and the liberty of watching him crushing everything and everyone in sight leaves you tongue-tied. By doing the stunts without a body double or cables, he fits into the definition of India's Next Gen action hero without a hitch. He's a fine actor too, although it's the action that takes precedence over histrionics here.".[23]
Commando showcased internationally for the first time in July 2013 at the Fantasia Film Fest [24] in Montreal [25] [26]and will also be seen screened at the Fantastic Fest[27] [28] [29]in Texas in September 2013. He received great feedback from international media[30] and action directors calling him India's answer to Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa [31]. In addition, the media also tagged him as one of the sexiest men they'd seen[32]. It comes thus as no surprise that he has been part of a number of popular lists - Most Desirable[33] [34] [35] Fittest men with Best Bodies[36] [37], Sexiest Men Alive[38] being just a few.
After the success of Commando, he was next seen donning the avatar of a sharp shooter cop in Tigmanshu Dhulia[39] Bullett Raja[40] and was loved for his action and his performance. The director Tigmanshu, known for his gritty and edgy cinematic style, has once again cast him for his next venture - Yaara [41], a remake of a French film Les Lyonnais[42] [43]where Vidyut will be seen in a retro avatar[44]. Yaara is one of 3 films Vidyut has signed - other two being a large format picturesque delight by director Ram Madhvani[45] who plans on creating an aura similar to the Hollywood flick 300[46]. Following that he will be seen in director Rajkumar Santoshi[47] next dramatic venture. [48][49]
With most of the details being currently under wrap, one thing you can be sure of is that his action promises to be bigger and better and proves that he is here to change the game and consistently alter the yardstick for himself and thus others.
More recently he was seen starring as Chandru in the Tamil Film Anjaan directed by N Lingusamy[50] as a parallel lead to Suriya.[51]
He and his very own team of stunt men who designed, choreographed and executed all his action sequences with him for all his films.[52]

Personal life
In light of all the recent crimes met out against women in India recently, Jammwal, a firm believer in women's causes and equality, has kicked off an initiative to teach self-defense techniques to college going girls and working professionals and this transfer his reel life action image in real life too.[71] The self-defense training session includes core action and martial arts based techniques designed for women to protect themselves in the event of any adversity. Vidyut has even designed the entire self design module himself - using simple techniques that can be learned and implemented and that don't need a full martial arts training.[72][73] He hosted a camp at a college festival in Mumbai recently [74]
Jammwal is a vegetarian and appeared in an ad for PETA with the caption “Powered by Veggies! Go Vegetarian”.[75] He along with Kangana Ranaut were adjudged as PETA India's Hottest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2013.[76]
With vegetarianism, Jammwal is also considered a fitness idol among members of the youth. His chiseled and buff body has always been a key topic of conversation for him. His workout regime combines martial arts training with various other elements of cardio vascular, weight and interval training. [77]. More recently Jammwal has adopted and added Anti Gravity Yoga and Suspension TRX to his intense workout regime [78]
Being a fitness and adventure sports enthusiast, Jammwal also visited a lesser known site of Piedra in Argentina and took on the sport of rock climbing which he enjoys tremendously [79][80]
As an ode and as a celebration of his love for martial arts, Jammwal was also seen visiting the Shaolin Temple in China. [81] Vidyut's visit was meant to honour Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk who is credited for taking the teachings of Kalaripayattu from India to China. [82] He is also believed to have spent a week training as part of a very closed door martial arts camp at the temple which is meant only for martial arts experts and not novices. The camp covers aspects of attack, combat, self-defense and even protection and healing spanning various martial art forms.[83]
