Mods & RockersColFergStod (talk) 11:21, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Jim Excuse me if what I'm requesting is easy for some, but for me at 72 I'm struggling! I added an article to the page Mods & Rockers, and you have removed it temporarily, until I enter a reference/citation. I have attempted to find how to enter the details of my book on to Footnote, but I keep going round in circles. This is what I want to write, is this correct? Footnote: Stoddart, Colin (June 2016) 'Mods to Rockers' ISBN: 9781783019267 CHAP: 1,2 & 3 A) Is it OK to use CHAP: 1,2 & 3? b) If all OK and I copy, where or do I paste the details on the Mods & Rockers page, in the Footnote scetion? Thanks for you help. Regards Colin (Stoddart)
The Quint - Objection to deletion
@Jim1138:
Hi Jim,
I created the page for quint but I didn't delete any content form The Quint wiki page. Also I mentioned many reference link for The Quint wiki page. Uploading and referencing
Hi Jim
I am a bit stuck.I uploaded an NHTSA manual to WikiCommons. It was on the NHTSA web site and seems to be a document the NHTSA want to make public, I am not sure if it was correct to upload to Commons or even Wikipedia. I have the Commons URL for the document. I now want to add it to the Lidar article references, but for the life of me I cannot get it to look half decent. Can you give me a hint. I am using Visual Editor and a Mac desktop.
Foucault (talk) 15:33, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
By the way I replied to your message on my talk page, but overlooked pinging you.
Foucault (talk) 15:40, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh. And it would be good to get those manuals you mentioned. Thank you for sourcing them.
Foucault (talk) 15:42, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
One of the things that seems to be a big deal in radar and lidar is cosine error. I have mentioned in the lidar article. The best way to reference it is to write a WP article on cosine error and link to it. So when I have polished off the lidar article (or someone else does, but I don't see anyone putting up their hand), I think I should write a new article on cosine error. To do that I am going to need to draw a bunch of diagrams, so learning that from the WP help articles is going to be a big treat!
Foucault (talk) 17:17, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
If it turns out to be OK to upload the NHTSA document, I have given some thought to the categorisation, in ascending order
device specifications -> lidar devices -> technology -> speed limit enforcement -> law enforcement -> US regulatory bodies -> society
What do you think?
Foucault (talk) 05:53, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
I could avoid all of these problems by linking to the external source site. In most cases I have no choice as the source documents are copyright, my experience is that a lot of WP external links are broken, this is inevitable with the passage of time.
Foucault (talk) 06:18, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
OK. I am onto it now. I searched for "Referencing using Visual Editor" and finally came up with a decent help article. Foucault (talk) 04:58, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
- @PatrickFoucault: Sorry for not responding. I've been rather overwhelmed and overly tired. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 09:04, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
I hope it is nothing serious and you soon feel better. When you get a chance have a look at the Lidar article. Although I have further work to do I have taken the liberty of removing all tags, please put them back if you feel removal was unwarranted. Foucault (talk) 07:00, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Regarding to the article John Naisbitt University
Dear Jim,
Thank You very much for you suggestions.
I did not know for the summary page. I will take this into account.
I removed the text from the article because it references unrealibale sources. In Serbia, there is a great confilict between the remainins of Serbian Democracy Party and the current Serbian Progressive Party. The reference from the newspaper was created by Serbian Democracy Party and it has false information. This ruins the reputation of John Naisbitt University. We already took legal measures against this...
Warmest regards and thank you once again, Nebojsa Bacanin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nebojsabacanin (talk • contribs) 08:10, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
But, this article harms the University reputation. This article is full of lies and misuses. What kind of policy is that? You accept unrealiable references and sources. This is definitely for legal actions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nebojsabacanin (talk • contribs) 08:29, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Nebojsabacanin: Clear it up with Aljazeera. They are the ones reporting on the problem with Megatrend University. The Wikipedia article is just summarizing Aljazeera. [1]. It would not appear to be as you said: "is not valid.... and completely false" It sounds like Megatrend has some very serious issues. Jim1138 (talk) 08:34, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Error on YOUR part
I corrected the decorations because previous authors had placed multiple award stars in incorrect order. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.167.113.116 (talk) 22:56, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
I've also corrected the placment and order of repeat service star awards.
I AM A U S NAVY VETERAN. WHOEVER PLACED THOSE AWARDS FOR MCPON GIORDANO DID SO INCORRECTLY. YOUR REVERSION FROM CORRECT ORDER AND PLACEMENT WAS JUST AS MUCH IN ERROR AS THE ORIGINAL POSTER. UNLESS YOU ARE A VETERAN, DO NOT CHANGE THE ORDER. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CaptSquid (talk • contribs) 23:11, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
- @CaptSquid: Actually, I am an Air Force veteran. However, I have no idea what the correct order is, nor do I care what the correct order is. In fact, I have no interest at all in boob candy. So, I am apparently qualified to set the order?
- If you note the edit summary, I didn't undo the edit because it was "wrong". I undid it because the editor didn't bother to explain their actions with an wp:edit summary. Did you happen to note the Unexplained removal of content? Ever read the rules and procedures of Wikipedia, or are you just doing it Navy style?
- Interesting that Hyman G. Rickover does not have images of his ribbons or awards. George Marshall has smaller award images. I see that John M. Richardson's medals are 80 pixels while William F. Moran's medals are 106 pixels. Since they have the same rank, shouldn't their medals be the same size? And since Steven S. Giordano is a lowly petty officer, shouldn't his medals be smaller then the admirals? Interesting that someone I nor many have never heard of have about the same number of medals as Rickover and Marshall?
- BTW: is there something with your cap-key, or does the Navy always type in ALL-CAPS, aka "SHOUTING"?

Last Exit on Brooklyn change
It seems you have removed an addition to the Last Exit on Brooklyn site where I included the Espresso Float. As the manager of the Last Exit at the time it was moved and a long term patron I did not and do not think I need to cite myself as the source.
I have noticed significant changes to the page over time and the wholesale removal of information. If you were to look at the oldest pages (which I could not find in the "View History" section you will see my name, David Johnson, as the manager during the move.
My question to you, however, is - What gives? What makes you the arbitor of what is added to this page? Tell me what you know of the place? How do you verify the source information that others have provided? Is wikipedia no longer the open sourced place for information?
I am deeply offended that a place where I lived for over 26 years and where I worked for over 8 of them is no longer available to me for editing. I noticed that many of my past edits were removed.
We shall see how fast you respond to this as you had removed my post within about 1 minute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.21.149.161 (talk) 07:38, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Also, you wrote that, "The content was originally not there, so it needs to be left out until wp:consensus is reached. See wp:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle" however I would like to point out that the content was indeed there since February of this year, until it was removed by a vandal a few weeks ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2601:58C:C400:9DE0:ADEA:A945:784C:2D7D

Introducing a new hypothesis (speculation)
Hello Jim,
I understand why you reverted my one paragraph added to the "Chin" article. I agree that in the current state, it was a speculation without a peer-reviewed citation, as I have recently submitted a paper to journal and it might take a few years to have it published (or not).
My question is that how I can open up a discussion, speculation, or new hypothesis. What is the best way to deal with new ideas that the author likes to introduce to the wiki community on a debatable and open topic?

@Jim1138: You reverted an edit in which I removed content on the grounds that I didn't explain why. This was my message: "removed a bunch of words that said nothing"
I posted another, more comprehensive edit. I removed or re-order a bunch of content from a well meaning non-native english speaker. It wasn't well written and it didn't say anything important. Hopefully you'll agree that my most recent edit has improved the article.
.. Actually, it's saying I need to merge. I disagree and would like to just push my changes. I do think it's an improvement. It's better written (and cited), and I've moved all examples to the "examples" section.

- @Jim1138: I had an edit summary, but even if I didn't.. could you explain to me why "no edit summary" is grounds to revert a change? Is it vandalism in the vast majority of cases? That doesn't seem like assuming good faith to me. From my perspective, you just created unnecessary work for me. I'm mildly annoyed, TBH. I was making further changes (something I feel like people do often - I have nothing to back that up), and I ran into problems because of the conflict. The changes I made were obviously not vandalism, and that first edit was an improvement as well.
- The original text really.. well, it sucked. It wasn't good. I feel like you were jumping on me to enforce some rule I never heard of, when the facts made it obvious that I was helping. From other messages, it seems this is kind of a pattern for you. It's awesome that you're quick to respond. I admire that, but maybe you should slow down a little.. If you had left an edit summary to the effect that you were copy-editing, or simplifying, I would have looked at the edit differently and probably not reverted. The words you removed did say it in an overly complex manner, but "Removed a bunch of words that didn't say anything" appeared to not be true. It is generally permissible to undo an edit with a blank or unclear edit summary if the reason behind the edit is not easily understood. While policy generally recommends a discussion on the matter, there is so much vandalism and so people monitoring, it's generally overlooked. It would be appreciated if you would leave clearer edit summaries. Thank you Jim1138 (talk) 08:57, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

Hello Jim1138. The page should be based on facts only, so that's why I used the factually correct official Navy biography as the sole reference for the summary. For example, this person did not receive degrees from either Darden or from UNC, rather he attended executive education programs at those institutions. According to the Navy biography, his degrees are from Auburn (BS) Naval Postgraduate School (Masters) and the National Defense University (Masters). Also, this person is assigned to the Office of Naval Operations according to the official Navy biography. Further, we should rely upon the Navy biography for facts rather than any press reporting. Let's use fact-based editing. Thanks! Cricket1005 Cricket1005 (talk) 18:48, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Strongly agree we don't whitewash, but we need to keep pages accurate and fact-based. For example, the official Navy biography says David Baucom was a Director at his last command, he was "assigned" to the Office of The Chief of Naval Operations - He was not "relieved from his command" because he was not in command... He was one of the Directors at his command and he was sent to a new assignment. Let's use fact-based editing... Press reports are not fact-based, but official Navy publications are the official record. Cricket1005 (talk) 19:12, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Response to your message
Hi Jim,
I wanted to first post the text and then add the sources. I'll change it bit by bit with the citations from now on. This is my first time editing on Wikipedia, so I apologize for not doing things the right way. Thanks, Coco Cocosednaoui (talk) 21:25, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
i added that missouri is sometimes considered a southern state
I did not provide a specific citation because it is common knowledge that Missouri was a slave state so I didn't feel it was necessary. If it is necessary I will provide a citation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:401F:E1DD:129A:DDFF:FEAD:26A3 (talk) 00:17, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Torontino (talk) 04:50, 20 September 2016 (UTC) Hello Jim1138,
Yes it was a mistake as i was editing the great information i thought was useful. Sorry about that. I will undo and re add that part if that is okay with you.Torontino (talk) 04:57, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Following up on the removed content in Ricky Ponting, the content which I removed was having wrong information which was saying Ponting holds a record of 100 Test Match wins which actually is 108. That's why I edited it to 100+. And regarding this edit without any description, I am sorry for that. Srinjoy Sanyal (talk) 05:04, 20 September 2016 (UTC) Thanks
- @Srinjoy Sanyal: You should also wp:cite a wp:reliable source supporting that his record is 108. See help:referencing for beginners and help:footnotes. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 05:07, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Regarding the Virender Sehwag edit, I had known this fact since a long time, which is why I did not add any reference as I had not taken this information from any website. Srinjoy Sanyal (talk) 05:11, 20 September 2016 (UTC) Thanks
Ngihtwish genres
I moved gothic metal and power metal to the style music section so as to leave the info box clean. That's how it was done with the Epica page. Its to much of a mess when you put that much there. So they are not gone at all just moved. Delain123 (talk) 23:19, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
No problem I can movie gothic and power metal back there I just don't see the point and I'm just trying to keep it clean is all. That and trying to make sure there is no genre war. :) Delain123 (talk) 23:23, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Blue Thunder
I see that you also undid my Blue Thunder edit. If this is going to keep happening that you are the Edit Police, then I will no longer contribute to any edits on Wikipedia. I hate sounding discouraged, but I spent time making the edit and to see it undone makes me feel like I shouldn't waste my valuable time making any more contributions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrmarkus (talk • contribs) 00:52, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Mrmarkus: You can restore your edit.
- Can't you hit the space-bar after you type a comma or period? And, can't you check your work? Should I exchange my "Edit Police" badge for a "Cleanup After Mrmarkus" badge? If you are going to leave a lot of typos on article pages, perhaps you shouldn't be editing here? Jim1138 (talk) 00:56, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi Jim1138 -
Yes, I intentionally made edits to the Baraka wiki page.
It did not seem to present a neutral viewpoint and was very biased, so I made a few edits. I also updated the wiki with more of his accomplishments. I noted that in the comments of my updates.
I do think a fairer reading of his accomplishments and work put in context would improve the page greatly.

Australia at the 2002 Winter Paralympics Page
Hi Jim,
Please please don't undo all my work on the page, its for a university assignment. I will add sources in as I go, I've just started adding it today and want to save it regularly so I don't lose my work. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CS-HIST3002 (talk • contribs) 04:52, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
