Origins

A decision was made to move the previous variant of online petitions from the UK Government website to being overseen by Parliament and Government. This is in line with an historic role that petitions have traditionally taken. In use still today, there is a paper petitions bag within the House of Commons {for which purpose}

Beginning in July 2015 a group of MPs were formed independent of the Government to create the Petitions Committee. In its first year there had already been noticeable influence in the shaping of Government policy.
