"Wikibious" appears to be a misinformation website posing as wikibios.

    To Whom it May Concern,

While researching a very odd story concerning the assault of Senator Tim Carpenter in Madison, WI., I came across a couple of articles that claim to have been written by Anne Tyler. The articles are about one Samantha Hamer and Kerida O'Reilly, who allegedly assaulted the Senator during a BLM protest in Madison, WI. A Google search of their names brings up the articles on one wikibious.com.

I am dropping this note out of concern for Ms. Tyler's good name and Wikibios alike. I trust Wikipedia has means to combat this type of misinformation, and wish all of you well.

    Sincerely,

    T.K. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.90.77.223 (talk) 00:37, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibios is not affiliated with Wikipedia. You will need to contact them regarding any incorrect information displayed there. RudolfRed (talk) 00:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, there is no Wikimedia project titled as such, and so do not have anything to do with Wikimedia. They look more like blogs powered by Wordpress. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The term Wiki refers to a type of software (there are hundreds such) and to the sites that any of use this software (there are tens of thousands of such). The term predates the MediaWiki software that The WMF uses. WMF has no affiliation even with all sites using the MediaWiki software, much less with all Wikis. -Arch dude (talk) 04:01, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, I can't find a site called Wikibios. It seems to have existed once (there are some references to it on other sites), and I can find Wikibious, Wikibiosalary, Wikibio.in, but the site itself doesn't seem to exist. --ColinFine (talk) 15:14, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Footnotes in headings

Hello. Is there any way to add footnotes into headings without the footnote appearing in the table of contents? Thanks, Alextheconservative (talk) 10:08, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Alextheconservative: I can't think of a valid reason to put a footnote in a heading. Why/where do you want to do that (so we can suggest an alternative)? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 10:23, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:AlanM1 I am making a page about British political parties and wanted to point out that Sinn Féin was also active in Ireland. Thanks, Alextheconservative (talk) 11:47, 2 August 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alextheconservative (talkcontribs) 11:46, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Headings should not contain footnotes, see MOS:HEADINGS. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that an article on "British " political parties ought to be an article on "UK" political parties, since Ireland was an important part of British politics up to 1921 and beyond, and Northern Ireland is still an important part of British politics. Sinn Fein ought to be included not as a footnote but as a separate section in just the same way as the Conservative, Labour and Liberal parties. The same goes for the various Ulster Unionist, Scots Nationalist parties and Plaid Cymru. Where should one stop? The Communists, Fascists and various other parties have all been active at various times.Spinney Hill (talk) 09:10, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article called "List of political parties in the United Kingdom". It is not just a list. There is some text and and most of the parties listed have blue links. Is another article required? I appreciate you may have some angle that has not so far been covered and may need to be notice in Wikipedia. Spinney Hill (talk) 08:53, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see the point of the original question having seen the sandbox draft. I think that where the party operates in two parliaments (eg the Dail and the Northern Ireland Assembly or the UK Parliament and the Scottish Parliament) that fact should appear as normal text in the article before the table for the relevant party. In each case you could say as text in the table if the leader was leader of the party in general or in a particular parliament or both if it be the case. Hi My name is Laika Fatien and I'm a french singer. My page was created years ago by Universal Music France. I would like today to add a picture of myself and translate it in french too. Could you please help me in the process ?

Thank you so much. Laika — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:861:3D80:CF0:FDFB:F2D8:1F0E:350E (talk) 14:18, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Laika. I'm afraid that you (and Universal Music France) have a misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is: it is not social media or a directory, it is an encyclopaedia, which contains neutrally written articles about notable subjects, based almost entirely on independent published materials. The article Laïka Fatien is not your page, it is Wikipedia's article about you, and UMF should not have created it, at least, not without declaring their Conflict of interest. The article is likely to get deleted, unless somebody posts enough suitable independent reliable published sources to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. (I'm not saying you don't, just that the article does nothing to establish that you do).
Having said that, you're welcome to upload and add a picture, provided that the copyright holder (which will usually be the photographer, not you, unless you have an agreement that specifically assigns copyright to you) is willing to license the picture under a copyleft licence such as CC-BY-SA, (which will allow anybody to reuse or modify the image for any purpose). If you or your photographer wishes to do that, please use the Upload wizard.
As for translating into French: there was a French article fr:Laïka Fatien, but it has been moved to fr:Utilisateur:Hannah Swerve/Laïka Fatien, and is also at risk of deletion unless some reliable sources are provided. Pinging Hannah Swerve, who has also edited the en-wiki article recently. --ColinFine (talk) 15:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, the initial article was created by User:Epeefleche, not by the subject's label or any undisclosed paid editor, back in 2006. I see a lot of suspicious editing activity on the article, but UMF did not create this article. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:37, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The only way to keep from seeing such a message is to create an account and choose that option in your account Preferences. PATHFoundationAtlanta First, you should create a new account with a username that reflects that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account(your real name is not required, just something unique to you). Something like "JoePublic of PATHFoundation" would be acceptable. Once you do that, you will need to read and formally comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies(the latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory).

@Profcramkumar: It appears that you have written an autobiography at Draft:Dr. C. Ram Kumar. Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, it has encyclopedia articles. Please read WP:PSCOI, WP:AUTO, WP:Drafts and Help:Your first article before considering whether to proceed. GoingBatty (talk) 17:54, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And the reason that Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, Profcramkumar, is that profiles are generally written by or for the subject. In an encyclopaedia article about you, Wikipedia basically has no interest in anything that you say or want to say about yourself, or that your associates or institutions say about you. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with you, and have not been prompted by or primed with information from you, have chosen to publish about you. --ColinFine (talk) 18:45, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Notability, and WHat

"Notability" seems to me to be a rather vaguely defined concept. What exactly constitutes "notability"; and why isn't the state of being factual/accurate and widely refe — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZFT (talkcontribs) 02:48, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ZFT: For an explanation of the concept as it pertains to Wikipedia, please see Wikipedia:Notability. GoingBatty (talk) 03:03, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To summarize, ZFT, a topic is notable, and therefore eligible for a Wikipedia article, if it has received significant coverage in published independent, reliable sources. Every word in that summary is very important to understanding the concept, and these words are interpreted based on the 19+ year history of this encyclopedia. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:11, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notability, and What Wikipedia Is Not (^I accidentally clicked enter before I was finished)

"Notability" seems to me to be a somewhat vague concept. What exactly constitutes "notability"; and why isn't merely the state of having a significant amount of factual/accurate/coherent information written about it, and being widely referred to (or in some way related to something that is widely referred to), not sufficient alone for a subject's inclusion? In other words, why can't Wikipedia be an "[almost] indiscriminate collection" of organized information (excluding original research, for I understand Wikipedia is not a place to publish original content)?

For example, concerning the franchise Dungeons and Dragons, which as a whole is notable, I've noticed that there have been many articles about characters, races, places, etc., that have been deleted recently. Where, exactly, is the dividing line between "notable" and "not notable" when it comes to fictional elements of a notable franchise, and what is the purpose behind placing that line where it is? ZFT (talk) 03:17, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:Notability. (It's not a policy or guideline, but you might also want to read WP:Fancruft.) Clarityfiend (talk) 06:12, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ZFT:; When it comes to fictional elements of a notable franchise, the question of what should have an independent article vs. be covered in the context of the fictional franchise isn't so much a question of "notability" as one of due weight, avoiding coatracking, and basic article development. Basically, a fictional character should not have an independent article unless there is so much reliably sourced information that is able to be presented in a real-world context that it would overwhelm the base article (on the book, novel, tv series, movie, comic book series, game, franchise, whatever). ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:51, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about edit notes

Could anyone please tell me if it's all right to make an edit note a new paragraph if it gets sufficiently long, say, three or four sentences in length?--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:30, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "edit note"? -- Hoary (talk) 05:40, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: In my case, a parenthetical added after posting to cover something I should have brought up in the original post. Sorry not to specify that.--Thylacine24 (talk) 11:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You mean, something you write on a talk page? If so, avoid tinkering with your post if somebody has already responded to it, and make your new comment in a separate paragraph. (If nobody has responded to it, tinker away.) -- Hoary (talk) 13:35, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Thanks for telling me. I try not to do it if no one's responded to it. I have a talk page comment where this is the case, so I'll go fix it right now.--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:44, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: I didn't realize to ask – do you think this should apply even if the edit note is just one sentence? My bad about claiming that I would fix the edit note I was talking about "right now" in my above response to you – I don't feel comfortable doing so until I know for sure about what I'm asking you here. Sorry to be overbearing.--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:47, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thylacine24, all this baffles me. If an earlier comment gives a wrong impression that could be corrected with an additional comment -- and if anyone is still likely to be interested (if it's a three-year-old comment, they're unlikely to be) -- then make the additional comment. If either comment consists of a single sentence, then the concision is a virtue. -- Hoary (talk) 22:51, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Sorry, just wanted to make sure the "new paragraph" thing only applied to single sentences. I have OCD, so I usually feel it's best to make sure of things like this.--Thylacine24 (talk) 23:20, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Just made the edit in question, meaning that I went against what I said above about usually making sure of things like this before I make the necessary edit. Sorry about that, and please tell me if I'm understanding you correctly – it's okay to make edit notes different paragraphs even if they're one sentence, right? I mean, I'm not talking about concision itself, just making an edit note a new paragraph. Sorry to not understand what you meant in your third response to me.--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:21, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thylacine24, if you point me to the edits in question, I'll try to comment. -- Hoary (talk) 04:56, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    @Hoary: They're on this page. Thanks, by the way.--Thylacine24 (talk) 11:52, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You wrote something. You've then successively appended corrections -- even though there's been no response from anybody else. It's now very convoluted. Because nobody has yet responded and it's convoluted, I suggest that you revise it so that it says what you now want it to say, as directly as possible, with no appendices. -- Hoary (talk) 12:19, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: No offense, but that feels dishonest to me.--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:55, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If in doubt you can strike out your previous comment (or delete it as nobody has responded to it) and replace it by what you intended to say. You do seem to be in the habit of rethinking after an initial message, so in future it may be worth thinking in more detail before posting your message. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:09, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@David Biddulph: Thanks, I might try that. Sorry about the multiple times I've rethought what I've written; I have a Type A personality, so I usually post without fully thinking things through. I'll try not to, but can't make any promises on that front.--Thylacine24 (talk) 20:32, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citing how widely cited a paper is

I made the claim that Yeo 2011 is widely cited, which it is. Google & Bing searches show it is cited 3365 times. citeseer show it has 20 pages of references, but none of those are stable URLS. I did various searches, but the only results are neuroscience journals pushing their own journals. Do you have any ideas for how create a valid citation? Thanks Bodysurfinyon (talk) 04:33, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bodysurfinyon. As far as I can see, the only way of creating a valid citation of this claim is by finding and citing a reliable published sources that makes the claim . Anything else is original research, and not acceptable in a Wikipedia article. --ColinFine (talk) 08:49, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeaahhhh.... BUT, clearly this is not "original research". This is stable information that is readily confirmable, right? I'm all for the Wikipedia process. If you accept that the previous 2 assertions are correct, then I hope we can agree that looking for a way to confirm this claim is a reasonable course of action. It is a fact that on 2020-08-03 the web search says it has been cited 3365 times. Any takers? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bodysurfinyon (talkcontribs) 18:35, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Substituting a dead source?

I'm currently trying to improve an article by adding new information to it: "Work This Body". One of the facts about the song's composition in the article: "Petricca also explained that the song's 'ecstatic and clamorous beat' is 'caused by the band's addition of more than a dozen different percussion instruments into the song'" comes from a Spotify track by track commentary which is currently unavailable due to it being removed: https://open.spotify.com/album/6TqacRIo8Fb9A0vA506wMj The page has been archived on the Internet Archive multiple times, including this link that has a 30 second sample of each track: https://web.archive.org/web/20190114003930/https://open.spotify.com/album/6TqacRIo8Fb9A0vA506wMj However, it does not contain the actual part of the article I quoted. The only place I can find it mentioned/paraphrased is on a Genius lyrics page: https://genius.com/Walk-the-moon-work-this-body-lyrics I know Genius is not generally considered reliable because its content is user-generated, but given the fact that it is the only website to have this piece of information documented that comes from an album commentary that did exist at one point, would it be fine to keep the information with both the Spotify and Genius page cited? Or does its unreliability prevent it from being kept? ThedancingMOONpolice (talk) 08:41, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Pi314m. If the category itself has ever been edited, so it has some content (eg a description, or a parent category), then it is not empty, and will not be deleted except through the CFD process. If it has no content of its own, then I think that it just disappears when no pages point to it. --ColinFine (talk) 15:05, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Anurag773923 and welcoem to the Teahouse
Please read Your First Article I can only evaluate the cited sources using Google Translate, which is only of limited value, a fluent speaker of the proper language (Hindi?) would be needed to do a proper review. I note that the first ref ( 4pilla) seems to have significant coverage of Jaiswal. However I don't know how reliable this source may be. Some other sources don't permit copying, so i can't even use Google Translate to judge their content. One other looks as if it might be substantial, but again i can't judge reliability.
Please understand that that an article, particularly an article about a living person requires several independent published reliable sources, each of which must include significant coverage of the subject, not a passing mention to demonstrate notability. Each of those key sources, usually three to five of them, must be all ofmthe4sae, independent, reliable, and have significant coverage. Also too many sources, especicially too many week sources, is as bad as too few. It buries the high-quality sources. You can ask about a specific source at the reliable source noticeboard if you are not sure if it will count.
I did some light copy-editing of Draft:Roshni Kushal Jaiswal for formatting and grammar. In an article the subject should always be refered to by last (family) name alone.
Please read referenching for beginners. Please use Named references top combine repeated use of the same source. Please use |trans-title= and |trans-work= to show the title and publication name of sources not in English, if at all possible. Please do not list the publication name in |first=, |last=, or |author=; those are only for the actual people who wrote the source, when those are known.
If this did not answer your questions, please respond in this thread with more specific questions. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 16:50, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is this map accurate for 1980? Sorry if this is the wrong spot, I was unsure whether this should go here or on the reference desk. TheAwesomeHwyh 15:35, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can I use Grammarly to help me write and correct articles?

    Félix An (talk) 16:28, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Félix An: I'm not familiar with Grammarly, but anything that helps produce better quality writing would seem to be a good thing, assuming there are no strings attached to publishing the result here. I doubt it supports wiki syntax, so you'd be editing plain text with it, then copy/pasting the result into the wiki editor to do the wiki markup (linking, references, etc.), just as you would do if you were writing in Microsoft Word or another word processor. Perhaps someone more familiar with it will respond. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:38, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, Grammarly can be helpful in catching basic misspellings and grammatical errors, but caution should be exercised, as Wikipedia's manual of style is, uh, unique to say the least. I haven't used Grammarly in a very long time, but please be aware that articles use different variations of English that Grammarly might not catch. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:01, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Vish.mystic. I have added a header so that when you (or anybody else) thinks that the draft meets the requirements for an article (taking especial note of WP:CSMN - I'm not implying that it has any of those mistakes, just that inexperienced editors who attempt the very very difficult task of making a new article often do so) they can pick the button to submit it for review. I realise that it was not you that created the article, but it was evidently created by a media company who don't know the difference between a user page and an article, and who are almost certainly involved in undisclosed paid editing, so it needs to be reviewed carefully. Please link to articles and other pages inside Wikipedia by using Wikilinks, thus [[Draft:Ravindra Singh Bhati]] displays as Draft:Ravindra Singh Bhati. --ColinFine (talk) 17:06, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a redirect which was last deleted after Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 July 4#iPhone 9. The redirect was also salted two days later. But, it should soon be de-salted. And then I am also not happy with iPhone X as the target for iPhone 10, which was last discussed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 July 15#iPhone 10. It's been weeks since the discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 July 4#iPhone 9. I really cannot live without a redirect. Look at all the redirects under the Category:Redirects from incorrect names. All redirects under that category are names that do not exist. For example, there is a redirect for Windows 9. I assume you are referring to this edit to Kosoko, reverted by Buidhe. You added unsourced information. Wikipedia does not accept unsourced information. --ColinFine (talk) 23:23, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In other words, even information that you "know" from family sources is not acceptable on Wikipedia. Information must be cited to a published, reliable, independent source (click the link for details). This is not only for the purpose of verifiability, but it is often the case that information passed down through generations by word of mouth will change over time, sometimes intentionally embellishing/glorifying the subject (a natural conflict of interest) or sometimes unintentionally (as is demonstrated by the children's game "telephone"). That's why we need to rely on a published source with a reputation for doing their own research and fact-checking before publishing something. I hope this helps. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am referring to the very bottom of the page on mobile, that user to say “last edited 5 minutes ago by mikemikem” and I could click on that and it would show me all of the recent edits

I should have clarified, this is only in the mobile version. At the bottom of the page, under all of the references, under the “Categories” box, is a green bar, and in that green bar it would say “Last edited X minutes ago by Mikemikem” or whoever else last edited the page, and it could be clicked on and pull up the edit history.

But for some reason that changed and I am no longer able to click on it to pull up the edit history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikemikem (talkcontribs) 05:21, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    how to create a page

Please guide me on how to create a page for college — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.192.219.145 (talk) 08:36, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Successfully creating a new Wikipedia article(not just a mere "page") is the absolute hardest task to perform on Wikipedia. It takes much time and practice. New users greatly increase their chances of success if they first spend much time editing existing articles in areas that interest them, to get a feel for how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content.
However, if you still want to attempt to create a new article, you may use Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft, though I would read Your First Article beforehand. If you work for this college, you will need to review and formally comply with the paid editing policy, and you should also review conflict of interest. This college will need to receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have chosen on their own to write about the college, and those sources must show how the college meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. Not every college merits a Wikipedia article. 331dot (talk) 08:47, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Natalie Wood Famous Actress and Film star

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am respectfully contacting regarding the article about Natalia Wood, Hollywood flim star and famous Actress. The article states she was from Russian decent and that her parents where Russian. There is disputes regarding this information From her autobiography it states her family were Ukrainian, on farther side they were from Kharkiv. There are photos of her in Ukrainian national dress, statements about her strong Ukrainian accent and many Ukrainian sites states she was a famous actress of Ukrainian decent

https://zabytki.in.ua/community/d/240-vidatni-ukrayinski-diiachi-teatru-ta-kino/6 scroll down to find the pictureof her in Ukrainan tradistional national dress. https://www.google.com/search?q=was+natalie+wood+ukrainian&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB855GB855&oq=Was+natalie+wood+ukrainian&aqs=chrome.0.69i59 Although born in the US, Natalie spoke Ukrainian and even Russian with strong Ukrainian accent. According to “Natasha: The Biography of Natalie Wood” book by Suzanne Finstad, for one of her Hollywood roles she had to “fine-tune her Russian dialect.. to lose her parents' Ukrainian accent.

I respectfully ask if her article can be amended to include the information that she was Ukrainian please — Preceding unsigned comment added by Derekthomp58 (talkcontribs) 10:04, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Derekthomp58: Hello, the place to suggest changes is at Talk:Natalie Wood. Or you can make the changes yourself ensuring that sources you provide are considered reliable. (Social media such as Pinterest, would not be accepted). If you do not wish to do so you can request changes at the talk page using Template:Request edit. However the mentions of Russia seem to be sourced at the article and I'm not well-versed on whether Ukraine would be considered 'Russian' contemporaneously. Derekthomp58, the article Natalie Wood states that her father was from Vladivostok and her mother from Barnaul. Both claims are supported by references. Both cities were and are in Russia, not Ukraine. Maproom (talk) 11:40, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, notoriously, the USSR forced plenty of internal migration (often via cattle truck and the like) on its citizens. It was common for Ukrainians to be sent to such places and forced to remain there. (I have no opinion about whether this applied to these two people.) -- Hoary (talk) 12:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Derekthomp58: I would definitely discuss it at Talk:Natalie Wood first, as changing anything between Russian and Ukrainian is almost guaranteed to be contentious (admins: is there some kind of DS that they should be aware of in this regard?). Remember the advice above that Pinterest, geneology, blogs, and other user-contributed sites (including Wikis) will not be considered reliable sources, and only hurt your case. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 18:39, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Big mistake in this text https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingush_people

While popular folklore claims the endonym Ghalghaj comes from the word ghala (meaning tower/fortress, today city), historical development indicates it is a composition of the words kha and khal, which directly means three cities. Inhabitants of the 3 settlements Targim, Khamkhi and Egikal, who operated as one, started taking over surrounding Nakh areas and building the grounds of what would later turn into the modern Ingush nation.[4] This is supported by the first actual mention of the word in 1590, when the "mountain people Kolkan" attacked 2 Russian ambassadors in the Darial pass.[5] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ingush1992 (talkcontribs) 16:57, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with coord template/Location map

The coordinates are not showing up in the upper right corner of the page at User:Jo-Jo Eumerus/Henry Seamount/ Henry Seamount despite the |display=intitle parameter in the coordinate template. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 19:07, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It ahould be "title" rather than "intitle", but it still doesn't seem to do the trick. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:20, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I'm guessing the {{Location map}} template intentionally does not pass through the {{Coord}} from the |coordinates= parameter to its output (it just uses it for the location mapping), so you would have to put a duplicate {{Coord}} in the article to get it to render, which is not ideal.
You might try using {{Infobox Seamount}}, which seems to work at Muir Seamount.
Also, I hunted for a more close-in location map, but Canary Islands and Spain with Canary Islands are cropped too close to render the label well.
Does anyone know if there's an easy way to find location maps that include specific coordinates, like a search tool or even just a dump of the coord info from all the Module:Location_map/data/* files? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 21:43, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the coordinates, perhaps the folks at WP:VPT can help? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 21:49, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In Henry Seamount {{location map}} has this:
    |coordinates= {{coord|27|20|N|17|46|W|display=inline,title|notes=<ref name="METEOR2018" />}}
The output of {{coord}} is the input to |coordinates=. {{location map}} captures and decodes the {{coord}} output to properly position the marker on the map. The {{coord}} output does not make it to the page source that MediaWiki converts to the final html. To do that, you need to change |display=inline, title to |display=inline (or omit that parameter entirely). Then add a second {{coord}} template outside of {{location map}} with the same coordinates and |display=title.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 00:09, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, in that case putting up a duplicate coord template is needed; I'll do that. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:55, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia page for Sarah Murdoch

Hi! Looking for assistance with Wikipedia page for Sarah Murdoch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Murdoch

There are few minor corrections, please. I have listed them below with articles that support the misinformation...

Australia's Next Top Model[edit] Murdoch replaced Jodhi Meares as host of Australia's Next Top Model after Meares infamously blundered her way through the third season's live finale in 2007 and flat-out refused to appear in 2008's finale. This statement is untrue. Please see below article from Sydney Morning Herald “Murdoch Leave Model” https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/murdoch-leaves-model-20111212-1or4n.html

Sarah produced Australia’s Next Top Model as well as hosted. • “FOXTEL announced today that Murdoch has decided to step aside from her role as host and co-executive producer of the FOX8 series.” • “As well as hosting the show, Murdoch also held the role of Executive Producer via her Room 329 production company." • “Brian Walsh, FOXTEL’s Executive Director of Television, said in a statement today “Sarah has made a remarkable contribution to Australia's Next Top Model and was instrumental in propelling the programme to its most successful season ever, in 2011."

    https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/sarah-murdoch-im-no-superwoman/news-story/99a806c45a4404d2aa7f323a06ac9f68

    • “Photographer Jez Smith rejoined the series…’She’s not only put her kudos as a model on the line in calling on her contacts to become involved but, as executive producer, she’s taken on a lot more responsibility and is really putting in the hours to make the show as good as it could possibly be. She’s amazing.’”

“Nine News presenter Kellie Sloane replaced Murdoch until May 2007, when Lisa Wilkinson took over as the new co-host on Today.”

This statement is untrue. Please see below article from News.com.au “Sarah signs off for Today" https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/celebrity-life/sarah-signs-off-for-today/news-story/b63cf61adc35b92b418bdbd90dd5d06c

Sarah Murdoch stepped down. She was not replaced.

    • “SHE'S improved the ratings, adjusted to a gruelling early morning routine and even put up with co-host Karl Stefanovic's jokes, but Sarah Murdoch's successful run on the Today show will finish next week.” • “Much to the Nine network's disappointment, the accomplished model mum has announced that after an extended summer of four months co-hosting the show, her last day in the Today hotseat will be Friday March 30.”

“She is also ambassador of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and a member of its development board.”

Sarah Murdoch is on the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute Board of Directors not the development board. Please below boards from the MCRI website… https://www.mcri.edu.au/about/people/board-and-committees

    Autopatrolled user

Some time ago I came across a few articles created by a user who has autopatrolled privileges (is that what we call it?) but the subjects don't always demonstrate or meet notability (I've prodded some, merged one or two, and taken others to AfD). Examples include Woman's Seamen's Friend Society of Connecticut and Hiroshima Tōshō-gū. I've left various messages on the user's talk page, but they don't respond. Every few months, they create new articles that are apparently off the radar of the new page patrollers. Is there a way to request that an admin leave a message on their talk page or that their work somehow gets reviewed? Thanks. DiamondRemley39 (talk) 23:36, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why are these Mandruss Markbassett two links red ? 2600:1702:2340:9470:4E4:5FFD:55DC:40F2 (talk) 23:43, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Because there are no Wikipedia articles with the titles "Mandruss" or "Markbassett". If you see a redlinked username, it probably wasn't coded the way you coded those two, and the most likely reason it was redlinked is because the user has not created a user page. In other words, the target of a linked username is usually that user's user page (e.g. Mandruss), and it's red if no such page exists. ―Mandruss  00:01, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Because neither one is the name of an article in mainspace (article namespace). I think you probably want the talk pages for those users: User talk:Mandruss and User talk:Markbassett. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 00:02, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The reviewers have asked for more reliable, independent sources that are not sites like Facebook (or here). Sources like the New York Times is good. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:50, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We require reliable sources for all facts: see WP:RS. We have additional requirements for sources used to establish notability, and this is easy to mess up. see Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). -Arch dude (talk) 02:43, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

References from propaganda articles and events that have no reference

Hi Wiki, My question is regarding the typical political issues. As we know, often, references are picked up from major new reporting websites to edit a Wikipedia article. Also as we have seen in recent times, even major news publishing businesses have reporters who fall prey to their own biases and give a prejudiced picture of an event, basically propaganda. Citing such links in the Wikipedia articles works, but is far from the truth.

On the other side, many events happen without getting coverage. Such events are not very coverage worthy, or fairly insignificant with respect to the world's most sensational news. Therefore, a citation cannot be arranged, even if the event happened and is known by everyone who has been a part of it. Right now, such edits get rejected by Wiki, but can we do better than that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rudranilchakrabortty (talkcontribs) 01:55, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Rudranilchakrabortty: our policy is described at Wikipedia:Verifiability. Like all policies, it can be discussed, debated, and changed. The discussion takes place on the policy page's talk page, not here on the help desk. -Arch dude (talk) 02:38, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rudranilchakrabortty: Note that Wikipedia has a total of only three "core content policies". These have been in existence for about 18 years, and are fundamental to the way Wikipedia operates. Any change would require extensive discussion to reach consensus. -Arch dude (talk) 03:55, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citing myself, in publicly published works

Unfortunetly, I've never been published myself, outside of "I saw you"s, in the local newspaper. But an friend of mine is a university professor, has numerous peer reviewed publications, and had done a couple of edits that cite his own work. His username makes clear that the editor and the author cited have the same name, and so it's pretty obvious that he is citing himself. The work has been published by respectable peer reviewed journals in his field, it is not self published. It seems to me that this is entirely appropriate, as it is so transparent, and does not break WP's "no original research" rule, as his edits are not original research. Yes, he did original research previously, had it published, and now is just adding to WP based on his old research. But I can see it might be viewed as crossing into a grey zone. I was wondering if there are any clear policies on the matter, and what is the general preception of this sort of contribution. --Keithonearth (talk) 06:07, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Keithonearth: I don't think there are clear policies. The closest I can think of is WP:SELFCITE, which shows that it is indeed a grey zone. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:51, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Keithonearth: I think that first sentence at WP:SELFCITE summarizes it pretty well: Using material you have written or published is allowed within reason, but only if it is relevant, conforms to the content policies, including WP:SELFPUB, and is not excessive. If you happen to be reading an article, notice a factual mistake that is not supported by a source, and have published on the subject, correcting the mistake and citing your own legitimately-published work is good for the encylopedia. What is frowned upon would be something like editing many articles and citing your own work when it adds nothing useful (i.e., as a secondary or poorly-related cite). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 16:59, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Reference VS Cite

I am very confuse about the where we use the Reference and cite. Please experienced writers help me how we can accurately apply these. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Azher rao (talkcontribs) 07:56, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Azher rao:, Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. Referencing is the entire basis of English Wikipedia, although I have never come across a completely clear explanation of it. You might like to begin your journey here: Help:Referencing for beginners. There are two main ways to create an inline citation. The first is outlined in Help:Referencing for beginners without using templates, in which you manually create a reference in the body of the main text, between <ref> </ref> tags. This method is relatively simple, but it is easy to make a mess of the formatting. The other way, outlined in Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates, involves {{template}}s, in which you fill out the required information using a pre-defined set of parameters, depending on what you are citing, such as {{cite web}} {{cite book}}, etc. The cite is still surrounded by <ref> </ref> tags, but it will be automatically formatted in the Wikipedia citation style. It requires a little extra effort, but the result will always be correctly formatted. Both methods require the existence of a {{references}} template in the 'References' section at the foot of the article: existing articles will already have one. Have a look at other articles by clicking the 'Edit' button at the top of any article - you will hopefully get the idea. Best of luck, and happy editing. MinorProphet (talk) 10:26, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Azher rao, The tl;dr (too long; didn't read) version of it is: a reference is where you're getting the information from, like a book, website, magazine, etc. A citation is what the reference is in the article's text.
The simplest method for websites would be to put the URL in <ref></ref> tags, but Wikipedia prefers as much information about the source as possible, like who wrote it, what time you accessed it, etc. Templates like {{cite web}} make that easier. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:22, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Whereabouts of an Wikipedia Article about my Family that I have been contributing to

Hi Fellow Wikipedia Contributors and Users. I'm a bit dumbfounded to find that I can no longer call up the Wikipedia article [in German] on my family of which someone else is the originator but to which I have been contributing as recently as maybe 2 years ago. I am wondering if the originator may have withdrawn the article with the result that there's now no discernible trace in Wikipedia. I have never had any problems accessing Wikipedia articles in German or English before and cannot imagine that my browser is now preventing me from downloading German language titles for review. It's all very weird. If it seems the conclusion is well founded that the former article has been withdrawn by the originator, would I be correct in concluding that there is nothing preventing me from drafting and submitting my own fresh article on my family and its origin and history? I would not wish to inadvertently offend the earlier originator whom I do not know, nor breach some other part of the Wikipedia contributors' code of ethics, so would appreciate any help and guidance Wikipedia contributors might kindly give. Thanks. JvB Jens v. Brasch (talk) 09:35, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Help:Cite errors/Cite error empty references define - 2020 Beirut explosions - rhosus.shiparrested

    Hello Help Desk,

Would anyone kindly explain the ref tags to me? I have been using <ref name"ThisStringIsARefName>{{Cite Template|param=param}}</ref> and <ref name="ThisStringIsARefName"/> for some time and it generally works, but I came across Template:R on 2020 Beirut explosions. The issue I don't understand is why

Cite error: A list-defined reference with the name "rhosus.shiparrested" has been invoked, but is not defined in the <references> tag (see the help page).

appears. Could anyone assist? Xenmorpha (talk) 10:17, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Xenmorpha, I haven't come across this before, but it appears to be Template:R, which re-uses the ref name defined in <ref name="ThisStringIsARefName"/> with less clutter. eg <ref name="rhosus.fleetmon"> is later referred to as {{r|rhosus.fleetmon}}. The error message appears because the ref name has been defined elsewhere in the article, and you are only editing a single section. It usually doesn't matter, and when you publish the changes, it tends to sort itself out. MinorProphet (talk) 12:19, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite direct knowledge regarding a member of my family

    Hi there,

I am editing trhe wikipedia page of a deceased family member. I added a picture and information about his life and sons but my edits were deleted and I was told I need a source. As a living relative I have direct knowledge of this. What can I do here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BHFamilyHistory (talkcontribs) 12:18, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot do anything if you cannot provide reliable sources for that information. "Direct knowledge" and "family tradition" and the like fail our core value of verifiability. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:41, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Url needed

The article monarchy of Spain contains this text:

A copy of the Spanish Constitution, signed by King Juan Carlos, is held at the Palace of the Cortes.
The constitution defines the government's responsibilities.[1] The government consists of the President of the Government and ministers of state. The government conducts domestic and foreign policy, civil and military administration, and the defense of the nation all in the name of the king. Additionally, the government exercises executive authority and statutory regulations.[1] The most direct prerogative the monarch exercises in the formation of Spanish governments is in the nomination and appointment process of the President of the Government (Presidente del Gobierno de España).[1][2]Template:Url needed[3] Following the General Election of the Cortes Generales (Cortes), and other circumstances provided for in the constitution, the king meets with and interviews the political party leaders represented in the Cortes, and then consults with the Speaker of the Congress (who, in this instance, represents the whole of the Cortes Generales).

The template template:url needed does not exist. What template should be used instead? JIP | Talk 14:26, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

JIP, The message refers to the {{cite news}} template, which requires a valid |url= parameter. However, {{Cite news}} is the wrong template for citing the EC English style guide[4]. Someone has removed the url from the cite, and added {{url needed|reason=URL given was for an unrelated story|date=September 2019}}. This is the reason for the red message, which refers to any template missing a url with a valid access date. The best template is probably {{cite web}} using similar parameters; the url I found, shown in ref.[4] below, is for the Eighth edition of January 2016, Last updated August 2020; so you should change the title accordingly, and add |accessdate=5 August 2020. Thank you and looking forward to detailed response.

Ideally, an article would be created by someone who is not involved with the individual or company. If they have asked you to create an article for them, I strongly suggest you read and understand the conflict of interest and paid editing policies, as while you would not be completely disallowed to create/edit, your contributions will be viewed with more scrutiny. Edit requests are generally what editors with COI (paid or otherwise) use to contribute to articles. You may also wish to tell these interested persons that being on Wikipedia isn't necessarily a good thing. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:37, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A user of this IP address was warned, not blocked, about adding an unreferenced name -- Bryce Stanley (Stand up Comedian) -- to a page. That edit was removed because it does not meet our requirements for lists (there is no article for that person) and was unreferenced. To answer you more general question, you should not waste your valuable time attempting to contribute unless you are willing to learn a few basic things about how we operate.
