Bird On The Buffalo is a 2012 song written by singer and songwriter Angus Stone. It was featured on his 2012 studio album release, Broken Brights, and served as its second single.
Composition and Lyrics
[edit]Regarding the creation of Bird on the Buffalo, Stone stated that: 'Bird on the Buffalo was a song I wrote on the road inbetween recording a few songs in Europe'. [4]
Speaking of what inspired the creation of the track, Stone said that: 'The imagery of it I think(...) I caught from, I think I was watching the discovery channel or something, and I saw, I saw the little birds on the buffalo. And they had this relationship, it was kind of mutual and they could get together, and you know they didn't have to talk or, I don't know there's something about it was just cool.' [4]
Music Video
[edit]The Music Video features Stone in a desert, walking around and singing. Then-girlfriend of Stone, and model, Isabel Lucas features in the video [5] [6]
An owl features in the video, perching upon Stone's arm throughout the video. Lucas transforms into the owl in the video.[7]
Of the video, music reviewer Amelia Steele wrote: 'Stone uses metaphor to effectively illustrate a budding romance, sharing his personal sentiments in a way that is relatable to all. He weaves familiar electric guitar riffs with his subtle and anecdotal vocal, which, in accordance with the cinematic scenery presented in the video, produces an emotive and exciting effect.'[8]
Reception
[edit]Bird on the Buffalo was generally well recieved by critics and audience alike. Journalist Luke Henriques-Gomes wrote that Bird On The Buffalo was: 'one of the album’s finer moment', and featured: 'a gorgeous vocal performance and a memorable off-beat melody. Henriques-Gomes further stated the track was:'simply one of Stone’s best songs, solo or otherwise'. [9]
Musician Casey Karger commented: ' "Bird on the Buffalo” is a musically perfect track with lyrics that 'sing of a complicated relationship hinted at in the title.' [10]
Bird on the Buffalo was nominated for APRA Song Of The Year 2013, reaching the Top 30 shortlist. [11]
