Since 2016, he has also been serving as the Head of the Department of Management.[2]
Career
[edit]Professional Career
[edit]Gnyawali started his professional career as a Gazetted Officer at Nepal's Ministry of Industry, eventually becoming Deputy Secretary.[3] He helped to promote and support small and micro-enterprises through a joint program between the Government of Nepal and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). [3]He also served as a GIZ consultant in Malawi and Singapore.
Academic Career
[edit]Gnyawali entered academia as a Ph.D. student and graduate instructor at the University of Pittsburgh. In early 1997, he taught as a visiting instructor at West Virginia University. Later that year, he joined Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management. He was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2003 and further advanced to Professor in 2010, while also serving as Director of Graduate Studies.[3] In 2011, he was named the R. B. Pamplin Professor of Management in recognition of his contributions to research and teaching..[4] Since December 2016, Gnyawali has held the role of Department Head of Management at the Pamplin College of Business [2]
Gnyawali has contributed to academia through both editorial roles and research publications. He served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Management (2014–2018) and as a Special Issue Editor for Long Range Planning (2017–2019). His research work has been published in top journals, including Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Information Systems Journal and Research Policy.[4] Additionally, he has presented his work at major conferences,[1] such as the Academy of Management Annual Meetings and the Strategic Management Society International Conferences, where he has served in various roles, including conference organizer, session chair, discussant, and panelist.[5][4]
Key Contributions and Research
[edit]Gnyawali’s work primarily focuses on two interrelated streams.[1][6][7] The first stream investigates how firms’ positions in strategic alliances and inter-firm networks influence their resource advantages or disadvantages and competitive actions.[8] He introduced a multi-level theory integrating interfirm networks and competitive dynamics, which has influenced subsequent research in the field.[9][3][1] His work also explores how firms leverage both internal and external resources for strategic benefits,[10] including innovation and competitive positioning.
The second area of Gnyawali’s research is on coopetition, particularly in exploring why and how firms simultaneously compete and cooperate with each other. His early work provided theoretical frameworks and case based insights into how coopetition shapes firm behavior and outcomes, especially amongst large firms in high-technology sectors[11] and small and medium entrepreneurial firms.[12] His recent work introduced the concept of coopetition capability, examining how it enables firms to navigate coopetition and create value.[13][14]
Awards and Honors
[edit]Gnyawali has received multiple awards for his contributions to teaching and research,[15] including the Warren Holtzman Research Award[3][4] and several Faculty Research Awards from Virginia Tech’s Department of Management.[3][4] His work was recognized as a runner-up for the Academy of Management Review Best Paper Award in 2001.[3][4] Gnyawali has also delivered keynote presentations at major academic conferences[16] such as the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management and various universities globally.[5] He currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Umea School of Business and Economics in Sweden.[17][18]
