Genaro Strobel Genaro Strobel, born on the 5th of September 1984 in Frankfurt am Main, is a German artist known for his large-scale wood engravings that blend traditional techniques with modern technology.
Early Life and Education Genaro Strobel was born in 1984 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He pursued his artistic education through several institutions. From 2005 to 2006, he studied at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. He then moved to the Berlin University of the Arts for a year before attending the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin from 2007 to 2010. Strobel completed his formal artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, where he studied from 2010 to 2014.
Career Strobel's artistic practice combines painting, graphics, and wood engraving. He is particularly renowned for his large-scale woodcuts, which integrate natural grain, photography, and colors applied using rollers and brushes.
Technique and Style Strobel's technique involves several steps, starting with photographs that he enhances digitally by stacking multiple images to increase resolution. These enhanced images serve as templates for laser-cutting printing blocks from carefully selected veneer panels. The use of laser cutting allows for precise pixel-by-pixel engraving, a process that can take several hours. The wood species used, such as birch, pine, or poplar, leave an imprint of their natural grain on the finished prints, adding a layer of organic texture to the work.
In many of his wood engravings, Strobel contrasts the precision of camera and laser technology with the expressive freedom of brushstrokes. This blend of gestural traces and geometric shapes creates a unique visual language that highlights both the accuracy of modern tools and the human intervention in nature.[1]
Exhibitions Genaro Strobel has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions: Wolkenuhr, Kunsthalle Darmstadt Studio Ost (September 15, 2024 – January 5, 2025). Size, Kunsthalle Darmstadt (2021), where he showcased ten monumental wood engravings, some of which were up to four meters high and seven meters wide. Shining Bright, Priska Pasquer Gallery, Cologne (April 30, 2022 – July 15, 2022). Everyday to Come, Priska Pasquer Paris (January 14, 2023 – February 28, 2023). 1822 Forum, Frankfurt am Main (2014). LIMINAL, Priska Pasquer Cologne, Germany (2024). Inside / Outside, Priska Pasquer Paris, France (2023). Kunstforum Rottweil, Forum Kunst Rottweil (2014). Leipzig am Rhein, Wilhelm Hack Museum / Rudolph Scharpf Galerie, Ludwigshafen (2013). New Quarters, Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art, Düsseldorf (2011).
Notable Works One of Strobel's significant projects involves the depiction of the Messel Pit, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its fossil-rich oil shale deposits. He created large-scale single-print wood engravings of the site, capturing details such as tree branches, leaves, grass, and the recurring image of a pump that protects the fossils. These engravings reflect the vast area and layered history of the Messel Pit.
Awards and Residencies In 2018, Genaro Strobel was awarded the Charlotte-Prinz-Fellowship, which allowed him to live and work in Darmstadt for two years. During this period, he experimented with and expanded his wood engraving techniques to create extremely large formats.
Collections Strobel's work is part of several notable collections, including the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, the Institut Mathildenhöhe Städtische Kunstsammlung Darmstadt, and the Hessian Ministry of Finance.
