From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GoodYouths, MAD Streets (or simply known as GoodYouths) is a British coming-of-age teen comedy-drama web series created and written by Nana Frimpong-Manso. It will premiere on a dedicated YouTube channel on 20 December 2024. The series follows Black-British teenager Jamal Danquah (Abdul Orebiyi) and his friends Darius Frimpong (Tevez Mathias), DeMarcus Ayittey (Selassie Sena-Cofie) and Jabari Adom (Ivy Hills), as they navigate life during their final year of secondary school. The series explores themes, such as school life, gang culture, friendship, male bonding, relationships, black masculinity and provides social commentary on the conditions faced by young black people in society.

Conception
[edit]

GoodYouths, MAD Streets creator and lead writer Nana Frimpong-Manso described the series as a passion project. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Dagenham, East London and initially conceived GoodYouths, MAD Streets, in 2021, at thirteen-years-old, while he was at The Sydney Russell School. The concept was to explore an authentic but light-hearted portrayal of Black-British teenagers, without being labelled as “another show about young black people swearing, having sex, joining gangs, selling drugs and shooting and killing each other”.

Writing
[edit]

Frimpong-Manso originally began writing as a spec film script, in October 2021, and finished a first draft, after nine months. Frimpong-Manso began writing a second draft, between late 2022 and early-to-mid 2023, but had an unhappy experience during the writing process, due to racism and bullying at The Boswells School and developed PTSD and depression, upon moving to The Beaulieu Park School, in June 2023. Frimpong-Manso spent the rest of 2023 and the early months of 2024 redeveloping the script into a five-part series and began writing additional scripts, while taking time off to rest and recover, following his GCSEs.

The series mainly draws inspiration from the British crime drama series Top Boy (2011-2023) and Shiro’s Story (2018), as well as African-American films such as Do the Right Thing (1989), Boyz n the Hood (1991), Juice (1992), Friday (1995) and Straight Outta Compton (2015). He also took inspiration from British crime films, such as Kidulthood (2006), Adulthood (2008) and Blue Story (2019), and other British television shows, such as The Inbetweeners (2008-2010) and Some Girls (2012-2014).
