Myung Jae-hyun (Korean: 명재현; born December 4, 2003), more commonly known as Jaehyun, is a South Korean rapper, singer, producer, and dancer, best known as a member of the South Korean boy band BOYNEXTDOOR under KOZ Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation. He debuted with the group on May 30, 2023, with the single album Who!.
Early life
[edit]Jaehyun was born on December 4, 2003, in Daebang, Dongjak district in Seoul.[1][2] He grew up with his mother and older brother, who was born in 1999. During his elementary school years, he briefly lived with his aunt, but he remained close to his family throughout his childhood.[3] In school, Jaehyun was the captain of a sports team and actively participated in extracurricular activities.[4] It is mentioned that he really liked sports and fashion before opting to pursue an idol career, and that he would be involved in something related to fashion had he not chosen music.[5] Alongside his academic and leadership roles, Jaehyun was passionate about soccer, which he played competitively as a midfielder wearing the number 17.[3]
Education
[edit]Jaehyun graduated from Seoul Singil Elementary School and Seongnam High School.[6] Throughout his school years, he was involved in various activities and showed interest in subjects outside of music. He was also involved in the economics and business management clubs during his high school years. Jaehyun served as a member of the student council, holding the position of either school president or vice president. He used to enter a lot of writing competitions in high school because he enjoyed writing poetry. His mother, who was working in the music industry, exposed him to a broad range of music, which influenced his later decision to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.[5] Despite his early immersion in music, Jaehyun also developed an interest in academics, which eventually led him to leave the trainee system. After stepping away from the trainee program, Jaehyun moved to Chicago, United States, where he focused on his education and took advantage of academic opportunities in a different cultural setting.[7] During his time in Chicago, he further explored his academic interests while continuing to consider his future career path. While in high school, Jaehyun received a casting offer from YG Entertainment. This offer led him to return to South Korea, where he resumed training to become a professional entertainer.
Career
[edit]Time at YG and trainee period
[edit]Jaehyun resumed his training in the entertainment industry as a trainee at YG Entertainment after returning from abroad. He trained as a singer before eventually leaving the company. During his time at YG, he was given the opportunity to use Bobby of iKON's production studio, which helped him refine his skills as a trainee.[8] Bobby also posted a message of support for him right after the release of the group's logo motion.[9] He later joined KOZ Entertainment in late 2022 to continue his training. Additionally, Jaehyun took classes at Def Dance Skool,[10] where he further developed his dance skills. During an interview, Jaehyun shared details about his audition process for KOZ. He explained that he was deeply focused on creating music in his studio when KOZ Entertainment reached out, expressing interest in hearing his work and inviting him to audition. For the audition, Jaehyun performed two original songs as both a singer and rapper, sang “idontwannabeyouanymore” by Billie Eilish, and danced to “Come Through” by H.E.R. (featuring Chris Brown) and “Womp Womp” by Valee.
At the time, multiple companies were interested in signing him, he reportedly received an offer from the record label Mine Field, which he declined. Jaehyun ultimately chose KOZ Entertainment due to the environment it offered. A producer at KOZ told him, “I’m not sure if you’ll be able to debut or not, but you can learn a lot here,” which stood out to Jaehyun for its directness and focus on growth. Following the audition, the producer also provided feedback on his rap and singing, offering suggestions for improvement. Jaehyun decided to give his best effort for two months, aiming to debut with a confirmed team. If that didn’t work out, he planned to pursue his own path. His persistent effort led to the opportunity to debut as part of BOYNEXTDOOR.[11]
Jaehyun was the final member to join the lineup of BOYNEXTDOOR.[5] He revealed in a live broadcast that he auditioned on the last day of the other members’ monthly evaluation, meaning he immediately started to prepare for his debut upon joining the group.
Debut with BOYNEXTDOOR
[edit]He made his official debut and became the leader of the team on May 30, 2023, with the release of their single album Who!. His debut marked the beginning of his career as part of the group in the K-pop industry. The track "Serenade" was inspired by Jaehyun's parents’ love story. According to Jaehyun, his dad used to stand outside his mom’s window every night, loudly professing his love for her. This happened so often that the entire neighborhood eventually knew her name. Jaehyun shared that he wrote the chorus from the perspective of the neighbors, humorously imagining them pleading for some peace and quiet as his dad’s nightly declarations disrupted their sleep.[11]
Ever since his debut, Jaehyun has participated in the music production process for BOYNEXTDOOR, working alongside his group members Woonhak and Taesan, as well as with various producers at KOZ Entertainment. Among the individuals he has worked with are Zico, the founder of KOZ, along with Pop Time and Kako, who have been involved in multiple aspects of the group’s music, including composition, arrangement, and songwriting. Pop Time and Kako, in particular, have contributed to the production of several songs for BOYNEXTDOOR, including their title tracks "One and Only," "But Sometimes," "Earth, Wind & Fire," as well as "Dangerous" and "Nice Guy". Their contributions to these tracks involve a range of musical elements such as the creation of melodies, the arrangement of instrumental sections, and the development of lyrics.[12][13]
In an interview with GQ KOREA, Jaehyun shared his experiences and struggles as the group's leader after their debut. He opened up about how he felt overwhelmed by the increased responsibilities, especially the need to support and guide his members. He admitted that there were times when he felt the weight of his leadership role, which led him to tears in private. Despite the emotional toll, he emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with the group and his determination to be there for his members in difficult moments.
Other ventures
[edit]Jaehyun has been featured in numerous fashion magazines and journals, including Weverse Magazine, Smart Magazine, WAVES, Star1, GQ KOREA, AR Magazine, Nylon Japan, S Cawaii! ME, appearing in Elle Korea's October 2024 issue,[14] as well as Men's Folio, Dazed Korea, Singles Magazine, and Junon Magazine.[15] These publications have included various editorial features, photoshoots, and interviews related to his activities as a member of BOYNEXTDOOR and his presence in the entertainment and fashion industries.
Collaborations
[edit]Jaehyun has collaborated with Lee Young Ji for a performance of "I Need a Girl". The performance took place on M Countdown, where Jaehyun and Lee Young Ji performed the track as part of a special stage.[16]
Jaehyun participated in another M Countdown performance of "Fighting" with Hanbin of Zerobaseone and Sohee of Riize. This stage also showcased the three artists performing together on the same platform.[17]
Additionally, Jaehyun was part of a collaborative project between BOYNEXTDOOR and the NBA.[18]
