Xing Shaolan (Chinese: 邢少兰; Wade–Giles: Hsing Shao-lan; November 24, 1938 – ) is a Chinese painter recognized for his contributions to modern ink-and-wash landscape and flower-and-bird painting. He is known by his courtesy name, Lin'ting(林亭), and the art name Loujiang Yufu(娄江渔父), and has worked under the studio names Gusongtang(古松堂), Banzhuju(伴竹居), and Sangyuxuan(桑榆轩).

As a member of the Chinese Artists Association and a national first-class artist, Xing's work reflects an influence of traditional Chinese art, combined with his unique personal style. His ancestral home is Rizhao, Shandong Province, though he has lived in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, for much of his life.

Early life and training

[edit]

Xing was raised in Taicang, Jiangsu, a region known for its cultural history. In the 1950s, he began studying flower-and-bird painting under the painter Zhu Qizhan and later focused on landscapes, guided by artist Song Wenzhi. This formative training laid the foundation for his career in traditional Chinese painting.[1][2]

Exhibitions and collections

[edit]

Throughout his career, Xing has exhibited extensively within China and internationally, holding solo exhibitions in cities such as Shanghai, Shandong, Nanjing, Yunnan, and Suzhou, as well as in Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. His work has been featured in national exhibitions and is part of collections in institutions, including the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and various art galleries across China.

Xing Shaolan Art Museum

[edit]

The Xing Shaolan Art Museum was inaugurated on December 19, 2015, in Liuhe Town, Jiangsu Province. The opening event included attendees such as Chen Ruijun, the wife of Zhu Qizhan; Zhong Zhengshan, President of the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Association; and several municipal leaders. The museum, located at 229 Beijie in Liuhe Ancient Town, covers 980 square meters and serves as a dedicated space for exhibiting Xing’s work and contributing to the appreciation of Chinese art within the community.[3]

Selected exhibitions

[edit]

In 2021, the Zhu Qizhan Art Museum in Shanghai hosted “Continuous Succession of Families: Xing Shaolan’s Painting Exhibition” in honor of Zhu Qizhan's 130th birth anniversary. The exhibit presented Xing's paintings that reflect his stylistic heritage and contributions to contemporary Chinese art.

From November 18, 2023, to January 14, 2024, the Taicang Art Museum hosted an exhibition titled “Jiuzi Danqing - Xing Shaolan's Chinese Painting Exhibition,” showcasing a range of his works, including the noted piece “Six Countries’ Wharf Trade Map.” This event featured works from both Xing and his son, Xing Xifeng, highlighting the artistic contributions of both painters.[4]

On October 17, 2024, the Taicang Art Museum held an exhibition titled "Lou Dong Yi Su - Donation Exhibition of Xing Shaolan's Works." During this event, the museum unveiled a new gallery branch dedicated to Xing's work. Xing donated 199 pieces to the museum, including his paintings, collected works, seals, documents, and other artifacts. This exhibition highlighted the unique value of these donated items and enriched the cultural resources of the Taicang Art Museum.[5]
