Yoon Jeonghan (Korean: 정한; October 4, 1995), professionally known as Jeonghan is a South Korean singer-songwriter under Pledis Entertainment. He is a member of the boy group SEVENTEEN and its vocal team[1]. In 2024, he debuted as part of SEVENTEEN's special sub-unit JxW alongside Wonwoo[2].

Early Life

[edit]

Jeonghan was born in Miadong, Seoul, South Korea. He attended Hyangnam High School in Seoul where he graduated with a major in Natural Science and was recognized as the third-best student[3]. He then went to Hanyang University’s Institute for Future Talents with a course in Practical Music[4].

In 2022, Jeonghan along with his fellow members, S.Coups and Woozi, started attending Graduate School of Business & Public Administration at Anyang University[5].

Career

[edit]
2013-2015 (Pre-debut)
[edit]

Jeonghan was scouted on 2013 and trained for 2 years and 2 months. He is among the last members to join the group[6]. As a trainee, he participated from the second season onwards of Seventeen TV, an online reality show that introduced Pledis' trainees and showed potential members of the boy group Seventeen before their official debut. The show was broadcast periodically on Ustream, where the trainees showed themselves training, singing, creating choreographies and playing games.[7] The online show also included participation in concerts, titled Like Seventeen.[8][9] Before his debut, he appeared on Orange Caramel's "My Copy Cat".

2015-Present (Seventeen and Solo Activites)
[edit]

In 2015, Jeonghan debuted as a member of the South Korean boy group Seventeen with the extended play 17 Carat on May 29.[10] He participated in writing some of their songs on albums: "Al1", "Teen, Age", "Director's Cut", "Semicolon", and "SEVENTEEN". After his debut, he also appeared in Show! Music Core (2015), M Countdown (2016), I love you Korea #1 (Dream Concert in 2016), M Countdown (2017), KCON 2018 JAPAN, M Countdown (2018), M Countdown (2018), and KCON 2019 NY as special MC along with some of his members.

In 2017, Jeonghan along with his fellow SEVENTEENmembers starred in their own web variety show "Going Seventeen"[11].

On September 16, 2021, Jeonghan released a digital song named "Dream" in both Korean and Japanese, written and produced by himself and regular Seventeen collaborator Prismfilter.[12]

In 2022, Jeonghan received treatment and underwent surgery for an elbow injury. It was stated that he would continue participating in the group’s scheduled activities, such as Seventeen's Be The Sun world tour while wearing a cast and brace, and would also receive ongoing medical consultations.[13]

In March 2022, Jeonghan released a cover of Japanese musician Mosawo's "Aitai" as a part of Seventeen's ongoing #17Studio series.[14]

In April, Jeonghan was announced as a new presenter of Tokyo FM's School of Lock program, a weekly radio show featuring musicians aiming to "hold the key to the future".[15] He held the role until December 2023, when it was taken over by bandmate Dino.[16]

In 2023, Jeonghan and bandmate Dino were cast in MBC every1's reality show Magic Lamp (요술램프) alongside Kim Jae-joong, Kang Hui, Lee Joo-ahn, Junpi, and Tan.[17] The program aired during September and October that year, and entailed the group travelling together in Montpellier, France.[18]

On December 14, 2023, Pledis announced that Jeonghan underwent ankle surgery and would be absent from their tour and scheduled activities.[19] On February 23, 2024, Pledis announced that Jeonghan's health had recently improved and he would return from his hiatus starting from March onward.[20]

In June 2024, Jeonghan and his groupmate Wonwoo debuted as a new sub-unit under the name Jeonghan X Wonwoo, or JxW, with their first single album This Man in June 2024. The tracklist includes Jeonghan's first commercially released solo track, titled "Beautiful Monster".[21] Achieving commercial success, This Man broke the first-week sales record for an album released by a K-pop sub-unit within four days of its release.[22]

Fashion and Ambassadorships
[edit]

On October 21, 2021, Jeonghan was chosen as the new ambassador for South Korean cosmetics brand Banila Co, in an attempt for the brand to expand into the Japanese markets through his popularity.[23] The business partnership has extended into 2024, with Banila Co using Jeonghan's appearance in "Nana Tour" to continue to promote their products.[24]

On September 4, 2023 Jeonghan was chosen as the new ambassador for South Korean clothing brand Acme De La Vie.[25]

In January 2023, Jeonghan attended French luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent's Men's F/W 2023-24 Fashion Show at Paris Fashion Week[26] alongside other big names such as NCT‘s Ten and Wednesday stars Jenny Ortega and Georgie Farmer[27]. Following this, in June 2023, Jeonghan was again spotted at YSL 2024 Spring/Summer collection in Berlin, Germany[28]. Most recently, in March 2024, he attended YSL Men's Fall-Winter 2024 collection[29] and was later on featured for Dazed Korea May 2024 Issue[30].

On June 3, 2024 Jeonghan was chosen as the new ambassador for Acqua di Parma.[31]

He also made his solo features on various magazines. He covered for 1st Look Vol. 220 in 2021, SPUR Magazine (Japan) in 2022, AnAn Magazine (Japan) in 2023. In the same year, he was also featured in GQ Korea February Issue after his appearance in the 2023 FW Men's Collection Fashion Show of the global luxury brand Yves Saint Laurent.

Public image and Popularity

[edit]

Jeonghan has earned the nickname "Angel" from media and fans due to his birthday (October 04, or 1004; Korean천사; RRcheonsa) being a homonym in Korean for angel [ko], alongside his "angelic appearance".[32][33][34]

Jeonghan isn't only known for his outstanding features and charismatic appearance. During his early debut days, many fans often confused him as girl because of his pretty visual[35]. In 2016, the Neowiz Games and MBC Plus’s mobile voting app, “Idol Champ” conducted a poll on “idol who causes short-hair disease” and Jeonghan was voted first with a total percentage of 50.1 beating girl group members such as Girl's Day's Hyeri and AOA's Choa. He went against Hyeri with a 30.1 percent voting difference[36].

In 2022, during SEVENTEEN's 2022 Japan Fan Meeting in Tokyo, Jeonghan uploaded photos on Instagram capturing some streets in Shibuya, Tokyo that isn't usually seen to be special. However, eventually, a lot of fans lined up on the same spot to take the same pictures as him[37].

In the monthly ranking released by the Korean Business Research Institute, Jeonghan has never left the Top 50 since May 2022. He reached his highest peaks on January 2024 (Ranked 6th)[38] and March 2024 (Ranked 3rd)[39].

Jeonghan has been noted for his popularity, especially in Japan, frequently landing in the top ten for Japanese rankings of popular celebrities.[40][41]
