Michael P. Quigley AM (born 1953) is an Australian telecommunication business executive. He was the first Chief Executive Officer of NBN Co.[1][2]

Career

[edit]

He studied at the University of New South Wales where he received a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons 1).[citation needed]

From 1971 to 2007 he worked for Alcatel,[1] including in the position of CEO for the company's American arm.[2] At Alcatel Australia he was responsible for Alcatel’s business in Australia and New Zealand and established an early focus on research and development and technical management. He moved to the US in 1999 and was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Alcatel USA in 2000. He was subsequently appointed President of Alcatel’s Fixed Communications Group based in Paris. In this position, he was responsible for infrastructure products, including network switches and optical communications systems. His final position in Alcatel was as President and Chief Operating Officer based in Paris.

From 24 July 2009 to 3 October 2013 he was CEO of NBN Co Limited.

NBN

[edit]

Mike Quigley was appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of NBN Co on 25 July 2009.[3][4][5][6][7] In June 2010 he would donate his first year's salary of $2 million [8] to Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), which intended to use the NBN to deliver remote rehabilitation therapy to stroke patients.

Mike Quigley announced in July 2013 that he would retire from NBN Co.[9] He departed on 3 October 2013, replaced by former OPTUS & Telstra CEO Ziggy Switkowski as Executive Chairman (and Interim CEO) with immediate effect.[10]

In December 2013, Telsoc (formerly ATUG), the Australian Society for Telecommunications & Digital Communications, awarded their "Charles Todd Medal" for Excellence in Telecommunications to Michael Malone and Mike Quigley.[11]

In 2015 Quigley, as past CEO of NBN Co, criticised the changes made to use the old copper network (FTTN) and Pay TV Cables (HFC) instead of continuing with the Fibre to the home rollout. He noted cost increases and delays that he said were the result of changes made to the rollout plan.[12][13][14][15][16][17]

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation

[edit]

In June 2024 Quigley was appointed as Chair of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), for a four-year term.

Other roles

[edit]

Quigley was director of the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute.

Honours

[edit]

In 2022, Quigley was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours for "significant service to the telecommunications sector, and to education".[18]
