The current setup which tries to make Age of Reason a pure synonym of Age of Enlightenment is confusing and unhelpful. It leads to the Age of Reason (disambiguation) page having a blue link to Age of Reason which is in turn a redirection to Age of Enlightenment. This page then has had to have a long explanation (when people see it) which doesn't say a great deal.

However the number of entries in the disambiguation page shows that Age of Reason has a much more varied usage than Age of Enlightenment. It can variously refer to 17th-century philosophy or 18th-century philosophy or a range of book titles, etc. I therefore propose:

  1. Age of Reason redirect to Age of Reason (disambiguation)
  2. The first reference of Age of Reason (disambiguation) link directly to Age of Enlightenment
  3. The hat note in Age of Enlightenment referring to Age of Reason be removed as it is simply trying to clear up the confusion. The "also known as the Age of Reason" in the first line could then include a link which will then go back to the disambiguation page.
  4. Most of the R templates be removed from this page.

Ok? Chris55 (talk) 18:28, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done.
The page is actually redirected to the decapitalised Age of reason (disambiguation). Also pages that link to this page have in general been redirected to Age of Enlightenment; the main exceptions are the not infrequent discussions which also include links to Age of Enlightenment.
It may be noted that Age of reason was already a direct link to Age of Enlightenment and that hasn't been changed. Chris55 (talk) 10:16, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I moved Age of reason (disambiguation) to Age of reason (per WP:MALPLACED, reverting the 00:14, 6 October 2006 move by Naufana of Age of reason to Age of Reason (disambiguation) (rationale: Because it is a disambiguation page, "Age of Reason" redirects to the philosophical movement, which I think is proper.) This move was prompted by the 13:22, 19 January 2024 edit by Randy Kryn.
Wiktionary indicates that the lowercase form is a synonym for age of discretion, while the capitalized form is a synonym for Age of Enlightenment. – wbm1058 (talk) 14:31, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
