I recommend merging this article with Aldol reaction. Haligonian1 14:17, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely agree. Aldol reaction is a featured article with much more info on the subject.

As a really forgetful person, I rely on wiki articles to remind me of what compounds like Aldols are. I do agree that Aldol reaction gives a much better explanation of what an Aldol is and how an Aldol reacts, but I don't agree that the two should be merged. For example, Ester is independent of Esterification, while both have 'good', informative content. Perhaps, a simpler explanation of the structure of an Aldol (eg. RCOCH(R')COHR" -I'm still not sure of the structure myself.), along with a summary of the main reactions and chemical properties of Aldols would be a better alternative than merging it with a detailed page that could easily overwhelm someone looking for a short, concise definition? I'm new to this, so I won't try to edit anything without being given the green light.--Tomásdearg92 (talk) 14:36, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely think that having a short article on what an aldol is specifically is a good idea. The section in this article about aldol discovery however, is actually about the aldol reaction, and probably can be removed entirely.CrocodilesAreForWimps (talk) 15:20, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I believe that this article should be expanded relating the applications of aldols and the structural components of it. Maybe even include the presence of aldols in natural products. Logangarvin (talk) 21:20, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Editing plans

[edit]

I plan on fixing the second citation by adding the pages referenced and finding the citations for the dehydration equation. I will add more examples of Aldols under Reactions and its applications. I also want to expand on the structure and bonding of Aldols. --TaroToro (talk) 05:18, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Plans: Include more images of different types of aldols, including intramolecular aldols and ketols, that highlight how to identify aldols (i.e. the particular bonds). Create a section for the Knoevenagel reaction under the subclass of “Reactions”, as this is an important variation on the Aldol condensation reaction Discuss more uses of aldols in other reactions, for example, as a method for carbon-carbon bond formation Discuss mixed (crossed) aldol reactions, and the conditions and acceptor donor requirements Wikichem63 (talk) 06:41, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikichem63: Please be mindful of Aldol reaction, an extensive article Aldol refers to a functional group, a narrower topic. Use reviews or books for your sources. --Smokefoot (talk) 13:14, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal

[edit]

I propose merging Hydroxy ketone into Aldol. I think the content in Hydroxy ketone can easily be explained in the context of Aldol, and a merge would not cause any article-size or weighting problems in Aldol. Jeaucques Quœure (talk) 14:23, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. Hydroxy ketone clearly identifies its scope as not limited to beta hydroxyl (discussing acyloin, which cannot arise from aldol reactions) whereas aldol is specifically beta, arises most commonly from aldol reactions, and can undergo a dehydration reaction that is unique to the beta form. Closing stale proposal, given the uncontested objection and no support. Klbrain (talk) 10:01, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
