OSM is wrong

[edit]

Prosperosity, do I know this right that you know your way around OpenStreetMap processes? The Awaroa River as mapped there is wrong. It takes in Jenkins Falls (Q32229278) but that's part of Table Creek (Q34899940). Rather, it starts where Evans Creek (Q32194661) finishes. Would you know how to extract the LINZ river course data out of their database and import them into OSM? That would presumably fix the river map chart used in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schwede66 (talkcontribs) 01:37, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy ping for Prosperosity after a forgotten signature. 📊Panamitsu (talk) 02:11, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, let me have a look and I'll try to fix it up. Prosperosity (talk) 02:37, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: There you go, all fixed. The updated map should show on Wikipedia in about a day or so. --Prosperosity (talk) 02:42, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wait a second, LINZ is wrong (one stretch of river is shown as both the Awaroa River and Evans Creek) - I'll change it again so that the Awaroa River begins at the confluence of Evans and Table, which seems to be the most likely correct answer. --Prosperosity (talk) 02:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Interesting. I hadn't checked Evans Creek on LINZ; I just assumed that they get these things right... I have an email for them; will alert them of the little mishap. Schwede66 02:50, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: I've found a few older maps which have a definite start point for the river ([1][2][3] - seems to be from the confluence of Evans Creek and a different unnamed stream), so I've updated OSM to reflect that and I'll update the article as well. --Prosperosity (talk) 03:01, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I've also done what I said I'd do and email the team at LINZ. The guy I'm dealing with there is super onto it; he's always coming back with definite answers. I'd be surprised if he came to a different conclusion. Schwede66 03:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the time I wrote my last contribution, I had already had the answer from LINZ in my inbox (I just hadn't seen it yet). In a nutshell, somebody stuffed up when the names got approved in 2015, the chap has also looked on older maps and came to the same conclusion how it should be fixed, and the corrigendum is likely to go through with another batch of changes on 6 June.
How good is that? Schwede66 04:50, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's amazing to hear! After 6 June I could have a look at the changes and match all the tributaries in OSM. Prosperosity (talk) 22:02, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prosperosity, Mr Linz has been in touch, notifying me of the published corrigendum. The LINZ website has already been updated. The overlap has been removed by shortening Evans Creek. Schwede66 03:50, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Drat, looks like they didn't quite do it correctly. Table Creek and the Awaroa River are still overlapping. Prosperosity (talk) 03:56, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I had not previously spotted that Table Creek also overlaps. Hence, I didn't report this to LINZ. Bummer. I'll get in touch with them once more. Schwede66 04:38, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prosperosity, the good people at LINZ have sorted the Table Creek overlap as well. Have a good weekend. Schwede66 05:25, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
