Oil in Kentucky
[edit]- The article History of the petroleum industry in the United States mentions "a well near Burkesville, Kentucky, in 1828".
- While drilling for salt-brine with a spring pole rig near Burkesville, Kentucky, oil was struck on March 11, 1829, at a depth of 171 feet. The gusher, that became known as the Old American Oil Well shot petroleum over 50 feet into the air for several weeks draining into the Little Renox and Big Renox Creeks, spilling over into the Cumberland River. The oil caught fire, burning a reported 40 to 50 miles along the river, and was referred to as the "River of fire".
- Until Samuel Kier found a use (around 1848), first as "American Medicinal Oil", called "rock oil" or "seneca oil," a liniment and a tonic for consumption and other sicknesses, as petroleum butter (topical ointment), and later as "Carbon Oil", the oil was considered a contaminant. An estimated 50,000 barrels of oil was produced from the well -- Otr500 (talk) 21:52, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
