Secondary school
[edit]She attended St Margaret's College, which was easy enough to find as most girls attending Selwyn House continue at that high school. However, the only source that I could find is Facebook,[1] and that's not good enough for a BLP. Hence I'll park this here. That article says that she started at St Margaret's in 1999 in Year 9, which makes her year of birth around 1985. Schwede66 10:24, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

Notability
[edit]Why do we have an article on this person?
She does not seem to be notable for anything.
The news story of having to ask the Talibans for sanctuary as a pregnant unmarried woman might be notable, but this is not that.

- Hi @CapnZapp:, thanks for your interest in the article's notability status. Personally, I think that giving Charlotte Bellis an article may be justified given the media interest in her. Bellis has drawn media attention in New Zealand, Australia and abroad for challenging the New Zealand Government's controversial Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) border entry regime. The opposition National and ACT parties are using her story as a test case in challenging the Government's border quarantine policies. The media has also used her case to highlight the difficulty that even pregnant New Zealand citizens and residents have in getting a place in MIQ, which has caused a lot of stranded citizens and residents emotional, mental and economic hardship. I think this article could do with more work to emphasize how Bellis' MIQ troubles has drawn media attention as well as her journalistic career with Al Jazeera. Another possible argument is that we have articles for various New Zealand journalists including Mike Hosking, John Tamihere, Willie Jackson, Alison Mau, and Mihingarangi Forbes. In short, this article may be viable but does need work.Andykatib 23:49, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
Merely being mentioned by the news is not in itself grounds for a Wikipedia article. The question remains: is Bellis notable for anything except her recent troubles? I see editors going to the trouble of finding sources mentioning her, but is that stuff notable enough?
This article was created as a response to recent events. Had she not struggled to find a place where to give birth this article would likely never have been created. That is our hint.
I personally struggle to see how the article subject is notable except for that one event. This means that the article should likely be restructured to be about that event. Compare to other individuals notable for only one event: we have articles on "disappearance of NN", "murder of NN" and so on. As opposed on articles about NN.
If we should even have an article. Perhaps Bellis is better used as an example on a page discussing a relevant issue (international relations, pregnancy policies, relations with the new Taliban regime, covid regulations around the world, etc).
I'm not saying I have the answers. But so far I haven't seen a good reason to avoid a formal AfD discussion. But I'll give it some time; the Notability tag hasn't been up for even a week yet. CapnZapp (talk) 11:37, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi CapnZapp, I agree with the points that you raised. It will be challenging to establish notability for Charlotte Bellis given that she is just notable for a couple of events. I agree with the idea of renaming and restructuring the article around the border entry difficulties. Still let's keep in mind that we have some other articles such as Suhayra Aden which focus on singular issues such as her repatriation to NZ. Let me know some ideas for renaming the article.
- Another idea would be to merge it into COVID-19 managed isolation in New Zealand#Accessibility. I have written a couple of paragraphs discussing how Bellis' case has shone light on the difficulty people have in navigating through the MIQ process. Let me know what you think of these options. - It's possible the Suhayra Aden article suffers from the same issue, I really have no opinion. My own solution is to nominate this article for deletion but since you appear to be willing to work to address the tagged issue there is no rush. I'll check back in a week's time but just say so if you need more time. Good luck CapnZapp (talk) 21:35, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for your grace and flexibility. Will do my best to address the issues. Can revisit the issue in another week. Andykatib (talk) 07:36, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
- I will suggest that we give a month. Today, I came across Zakaria, Rafia (2022-02-04). "The Reporter Without Borders". The Baffler. TrangaBellam (talk) 12:00, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, this article will be helpful. Andykatib 04:38, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
