Two Millionth Article (confirmed by press release, Reuters)
[edit]This has apparently been confirmed as the two millionth English Wikipedia article by Reuters [1] and iTWire (Australia) [2]. The source of these articles is apparently a press release by Wikimedia, which should be on meta and/or wikimediafoundation.org soon. Is there anyone from the Spanish Wikipedia that could help us improve the article further? Zzxc 01:47, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
It's UNBELIEVABLE you guys fell for this publicity stunt. You're as gullible as ever. This article shouldn't have been credited with being article 2M. This is simply pathetic. Wait- maybe you were all bribed after all.... who knows? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.78.40.245 (talk) 09:22, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
References & Draft "To Do" List
[edit]Regardless of whether this is the two millionth article, it has got a lot of attention from both within and outside of Wikipedia, so it should be improved beyond the current start-class (albeit relatively well-referenced) article. I have already added some more references and information to the article, but some people who know Spanish better than I do will need to help out. Here is a rough list of things that might need done to the article - any references or additional information would be helpful. Edit it as needed. Zzxc 06:20, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Upcoming season - include information from Pablo Motos's blog
- Description of show
- Development of concept with No Somos Nadie
- Some trivia or interesting facts about the show's production. I recall a mention of a special on Cuatro that included some of this.
- Reviews of the show by critics
- Format changes that come as a result of the switch to a daily show.
- Influences by other shows on El Hormiguero, if any are cited in relevant sources (Las noticias del guiñol and Brainiac: Science Abuse, for example)
- Better biography of Pablo Motos. Some information could be obtained from the Spanish Wikipedia article.
- GFDL or Creative Commons licensed picture of Pablo Motos
- Stunts (these could be included somewhere)
- Skydiving
- Pablo Motos took a trip with a stunt pilot.
- Doing a fake report at a desk while inverted, with tricks such as showing objects "flying up"
- Playing tennis while suspended by a cable from the ceiling.
- More science experiments (with independent references, if possible)
- Giant smoke ring machine
- Running an audio signal (from a CD player) through the entire studio audience. This was a record, according to the broadcast.
- Fake quicksand created by a giant air compressor forcing air through a large bucket of sand.
- Dropping various electronics (eg. a television) into a commercial water-like fire suppressant chemical.

- Ok, I'll have to concede that it is the 2,000,000th. If only I submitted my article, Varney, Kentucky, a full second later. But I'm hoping their next new episode will focus on Wikipedia and how they feel about being the 2,000,000th article. Inevitably, as episodes of this show get uploaded on Youtube and elsewhere, many more will watch this show. (Provided they get supplied with subtitles, of course.) --Let Us Update Special:Ancientpages. 09:14, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

- We ought to set up a kiosk at the Jordanhill railway station with a television monitor playing a continuous-loop recording containing episodes of El Hormiguero, which would give WikiCult acolytes a place to make a pilgrimage to which covers both the 1,000,000th and 2,000,000th articles. *Dan T.* 16:09, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Except that this would be against our licensing rules, even if the producers of the show granted permission for such use... to be fully in accordance with Wikipedia principles, it would be better to get the show's producers to do a skit pertaining to Wikipedia, and release it under a free license such as Creative Commons which permits free use including derivative works; then we'd be able to put it in the kiosk and even add English subtitles to it. *Dan T.* 16:23, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Could this be considered the 2,000,000th article or not because it was originally created back in February? --PiMaster3 talk 17:49, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- A cruddy article was created and then deleted; the current article was freshly created as article 2,000,000 (ish) and then the earlier deleted revisions were restored. So this article isn't that article :-) - David Gerard 15:37, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
2,500,000th article sweepstake?
[edit]Shall we have a sweepstake on the 2,500,000th English Language article? I wager it will be a type of grass native to New Zealand. Savager 10:00, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry Savager, I guess you have already lost your wager. Through speculation the 2,500,000th article of this Wikipedia is actually Joseph Francis "Joe" Connor, who was the late American baseball player, not a type of grass native to New Zealand. Banner
[edit]Please discuss the issue of whether this banner should be in the article rather than simply edit-warring. Traditionally, we avoid self-references like this, but this is obviously not an ordinary case.--Chaser - T 09:52, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- I think a banner would be OK for today. --Camptown 10:11, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- A banner should wait until this is the official 2 millionth article (i.e. it is on the Main page.) Besides, there was no banner on the rail station or the obscure species of snail (1 millionth and 1.5 millionth article, respectively), so I don't see why there should be one here. --Phirazo 18:16, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't think that it is very practical to determine which particular article is the nth article. Here is an example to illustrate why: consider a hypothetical edition of Wikipedia with 500 articles at some point in time. Suppose that the 300th article is about the number pi, the 301st article is about some non-notable band, and that the 302nd article is about George W. Bush. If the article about the non-notable band is deleted, should the article on George W. Bush be considered the 301st article? This is where the debate comes in. --Ixfd64 09:31, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
There are banners on the talk pages of Kanab ambersnail, Jordanhill railway station, and Forced settlements in the Soviet Union. There seems to still be some doubt if this is #2 million, so I changed the wording to "believed to be", and dropped the silly image. --Phirazo 17:00, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actually it is likely (I would say 60-80%, but I am making that up) that this is not the 2 millionth article. Whatever it is it is in a set of 6 possibles, 15 pages away from this article. Prodego talk 22:26, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- The data in question (a combination of the log files I took and ST47's IRC feed log) is not accurate to anywhere near 15, given the limitations of the script and the job queue at the time. The only way to know for sure is to look at the data in the mysql log. (Presumably, the Foundation will be making a news release in the very near future.) Zzxc 23:27, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Old history
[edit]For some reason Alkivar restored two older edits [4] that are the original creation of the article [5] and its tagging as a CSD [6]. Probably not a big problem, but it does make it appear to less informed observers (of which there will probably be many, given the article's status) that the article was created on the 3rd February - and also raises the (probably justifiable) question of who should be credited with the creation of the article (User:Eassin created it on 3rd February, and User:Zzxc recreated it today). Just wanted to raise this. DustyPeg1945 10:13, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- The revisions of this page prior to the deletion have been removed from history. What's up with that? P0per 02:17, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
I was looking up dilatant fluid, and google gave me a youtube vid from El Hormiguero of the host running across a pool filled with oobleck. This naturally led me to wonder what kind of show it was, so I started a stub to fish for information. This is the first time I've checked back, so I don't know about any of the CSD business. I renounce any claim I may have to having started the two millionth article. Eassin 15:20, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

- Those two revision were speedy deleted in the past, because the sole contents was "Spanish language TV show.", thus less than a substub. No censorship or whatever evil things you imagine, just normal housekeeping. andy 11:55, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

- There are exactly two deleted revisions, and these are those two deleted in February containing the speedy deletion non-article. There is absolutely no reason to preserve them, otherwise one would wonder why a speedy deletion substub could have survived half a year without getting deleted. However you are trolling and sockpuppeting. andy 12:18, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- I am not sockpuppeting. You only indef block my usernames so I have to choose new ones. If this is your way of communication - well. And that only because of disagreement in argument you call me trolling is laughable. Let's get back to the original topic. Under which policy is the re-deletion justified? And one does not wonder anything, because in the del hist it shows that it was deleted. RAHC2 12:31, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

- Ban evasion is not going to give you a warm fuzzy place in our hearts. The undeletion of the deleted revisions was not justified by any policy either.
- The article count is imprecise. The exact two millionth article depends on how one defines the count. This article is a reasonable approximation of the milestone. -- Cyrius|✎ 12:38, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
