One imagines that the most intriguing part of MacNeal's story would be his 1906 desertion, but the sources (in a cursory inspection) show no reason. Today's Marines are trained (or selected) not to give up until dead. Was it the same in 1906? Here is a fertile field for historical research. Any USMC historians out there with a bit of time to spare?
