Scottish Borders, Peeblesshire or Tweeddale?
[edit]I've moved Hawkshaw to Hawkshaw, Scottish Borders, and created a Hawkshaw disambiguation page. I've used the Scottish Borders local government council area of Scotland to recognise this Hawkshaw from other Hawkshaws. If it should be Hawkshaw, Peeblesshire or Hawkshaw, Tweeddale, then I've made a mistake. It should be moved to the correct one. Cayden 21:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Description
[edit]I think that to start the description in this way does not serve well the proud site of an important Scottish family. In fact, the houses are some way from the site of Hawkshaw (the fortified ancestral home), and are part of a hamlet that grew up some distance away, nearer the main road. They are all that exists of that small settlement - but it was not the original place with that name. Agendum (talk) 20:55, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hawkshaw cannot fairly be described as "a pair of houses", as this does not do justice to a historic Scottish village, although this may be the previous editor's personal recollection. My earlier edits to use a suitable noun have been replaced with a "citation required" template, and since then reverted. I don't think a search for a suitable word to replace the above phrase merits a citation template and it would be good if all editors could work together. I will attempt to rewrite this again – in order to minimise his problems with my edits. However, it would be good if any future problems could be discussed here, please. - Hi, I'm sympathetic to what you're saying about "doing justice", but that's not what Wikipedia is for. An accurate description is what is required. That is, presently, a single pair of semi-detached houses and some outbuildings of theirs, so far as can be seen. It can't (per the rules) rely on some previous editor's personal recollection any more than it can on your own opinion. Which is not at all to say that the past shouldn't be fully covered; but I think your well-written account of the past rather grander associations of the place are suitable and adequate to do that. If you are concerned about readers who only read the first line or two, I would dare suggest that they're probably not very interested anyway! Anyone delving at all into the article will get an appreciation of the history you're interested in. That said, we must take care to put fuller family history into more appropriate articles relating to the family as a whole, not just this place, if the family is indeed as notable as you say. (References for that would also help to illuminate the article(s).) 81.178.67.229 (talk) 17:58, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
