Comments about sourcing
[edit]The sourcing needs to be formatted using Wikipedia templates. Below is some input from @Adin-Atherton:
I was trying to find out about when he moved to the area and the plantation. This details who he purchased his lands from

My guess that he was invited to the governors palace quite a few times Tryon Palace ... Adin-Atherton
The palace had a large candlelight reception with fireworks in Dec 1770. It lavish cost caused resentment - J Atherton having to pay fees that month - see citation below https://books.google.com/books?id=skglAAAAMAAJ&dq=tryon+carolina+atherton&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=+atherton

See link - apologies bad Internet so cant see if it’s posted above or not Adin-Atherton (talk) 17:12, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
This is his will and lists his children and his surging wife Betty. It looks as if he came to North Carolina as early as 1735.
Still actively researching Adin-Atherton (talk) 20:50, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Name Atherton vs Eatherton
[edit]All original documents seem to indicate that his last name was Atherton and not Eatherton.
Eatherton seems to surface in the J.D. Lewis references and have flowed down into more contemporary research. Adin-Atherton (talk) 21:08, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
- J.D. Lewis used the original revolutionary war records. Many scribes of these records adapted their own spelling, so it was probably listed as Eatherton on some pay or muster records. We should look at the records in the Provincial Congress, also. -- Talk to G Moore 03:54, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Children
[edit]Jeptha married Sarah Tynes on Sept 13th, 1760. Children: Penelope (Atherton) Brunson
He married Elizabeth “Betsy” (nee Thorpe), the widow of Thomas Jarrett of St. Luke's Parish on March 11th, 1763 in Southampton, VA. Children:
Jessee Atherton.
Temperance Atherton, who married James Barnes. 2 children.
Elisabeth Dorothy Atherton, who married John Dawson
Mary Atherton, who married Turner Bynum. One son.
Frances Atherton (1770-1830), who married Gideon Alston (1765-1831)
Did his son Jessee marry ? Adin-Atherton (talk) 05:06, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
His will says his son preceded him in death and died without issue after his name it says “D.S.P.” - Latin for Deceased without issue - dēcessit sine prōle Adin-Atherton (talk) 17:48, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
Picture of Jeptha
[edit]Available in wiki commons Adin-Atherton (talk) 12:14, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- Wikipedia requires a source for this photo. Where is the current portrait located? How is it labeled. I have indicated in the Wikimedia image that it is probably in a museum in North Carolina. We need a source for this to keep it from being deleted from Wikipedia. Unfortunately, just saying it is freely available on the Internet is not enough. Ancestry is not a good source because ancestry photos are copyrighted. -- Talk to G Moore 03:38, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
