Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps?
[edit]In the table Mark Spitz is behind Michael Phelps. Phelps won 8 gold medals in 2008, while Spitz won only 7 in 1972.
But Spitz is ahead if the "rapid inflation of gold medals per Games, from 43 golds in 1896 to 302 in 2008" is taken into account (http://www.idsia.ch/~juergen/goldcount2012london.html). The site ranks athletes by how many percent of all gold medals they won.
In 1972 there were only 195 gold medals, in 2008 there were 302. So Spitz won 7 out of 195, or 3.59%. Phelps won 8 out of 302, or 2.65%.
Perhaps one should create additional tables (for gold medals and medals in general) that take this into account? SpitzPhelps (talk) 17:20, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
More info about Chinese players
[edit]The sequence number at the first column made editing a little bit difficult, so I give up editing and provide info here. Wu Mingxia only got 2 golds in 2012, but not 2008. All the others, see China_at_the_Olympics#Multiple_gold_medalists_at_a_single_game. Ftj1357 (talk) 13:02, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Alexander Dityatin
[edit]Why isn't Alexander Dityatin included in this list? Vombat (talk) 21:49, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Also where are Tatyana Volosozhar/Maxim Trnakov, Yana Yegoryan, Russian synchronous swimming-girls? They won two gold medals in one Olympic Game! --78.139.202.242 (talk) 19:29, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Rank should be removed from tables
[edit]I propose removing "rank" from the tables, because:
- Most importantly, it actually detracts from the article because the tables aren't sortable. i.e. clicking the up/down arrows doesn't change the table, and I think this is due to the "rowspan" feature used by the "rank" column. I want to sort by a specific sport and I can't, at the moment.
- It's an editing nightmare. I want to make a correction, but I can't be bothered because that means lots of ranks have to be fixed. (I see one commentor above me has said the same thing - here's a fault but it's too hard to fix).
- It's irrelevant. I see from the table that (e.g.) Greg Louganis is ranked equal 221st. If that's not irrelevant statistic, I don't know what is.

- We should be using Module:Autonumber. Also, the table sorting doesn't work properly at the moment. Adpete (talk) 03:55, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Table too many rows
[edit]I suggest increasing the criteria to winning at least three gold medals at a single games to be placed on the list 2001:D08:2102:13FA:F80D:5EE3:77B6:9D37 (talk) 11:59, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
