Jawad Maliki
[edit]I think this should be combined with the Jawad Maliki thread? the are about the same person. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cyaxeres (talk • contribs) 14:14, April 22, 2006 (UTC)
- I cannot find another article under Jawad Maliki or any other name. Please give more precise information of an existing article if you know of one. Perhaps you mean the article Jawad al-Maliki named Iraqi prime minister at our sister project, Wikinews? --Dhartung | Talk 06:54, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- He means Jawad maliki [1] (sic; note it now redirects to the correct spelling), which, interestingly enough, gives his year of birth as 1946. Can anyone confirm whether it was indeed 1946 or 1950, the BBC's estimate??? Jared Preston 08:48, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
1946
[edit]I can't find a reference to a 1946 birth date online, so I removed it. His birth year appears to be uncertain to journalists; it looks like "c. 1950" is good enough for now. His hometown is right between Karbala and Hilla which may explain the confusion about birthplace. --Cam 16:41, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Restored Juan Cole's assesment on Maliki, his article provides lots of valuable info on the syubject Occuserpens 20:49, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Broken Link
[edit]Reference 26 in the "Censorship" section is broken. It just goes to the homepage... I'm assuming the article must have been taken down. Google search for the quote led me back to wikipedia. I couldn't get another news article that verified the quote. Here is the original link for reference: http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/zones/sundaytimesNEW/basket7st/basket7st1156426205.aspx
Sources
[edit]There are plenty of sources listed at the bottom of the article. Which statements exactly are not sourced? AndrewRT 22:34, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Image/Photo
[edit]There is an image of Maliki (being sworn in, I guess) at the top of the article. Can that item be checked off the list, or should there be more images? -Fsotrain09 20:39, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I've checked it off AndrewRT 20:42, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Religion info should be removed
[edit]I don't think it's appropriate mentioning the religion of this man in his info box, since such a thing can't be considered a fact. AshrafSS 11:35, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, it can. If the man professes to be a Shi'a Muslim and practices it, then he is a Shi'a Muslim. Supadawg (talk • contribs) 23:43, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Exile and Return to Iraq
[edit]Article currently states he returned to Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Hussein was pushed out at great expense by powerful forces. What motivated and/or funded Malikis' return? Did he make a deal with the same forces who deposed Hussein or did he rise as a natural leader? Who paid his travel expenses coming home?Outofthebox (talk) 04:22, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Removed terrorist statement
[edit]couldn't find any evidence on this and it seems to me this addition is POV or even vandalism we should be careful of staining peoples reputations without proof, It looks like redneck POV: "if its got a beard and its a terrorist"Komaknacon 17:19, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think it's vandalism although I would question the relevence & neutrality - I've heard the line before about Dawa and it's discussed in more detail in the article Islamic Dawa Party. Dawa clearly was involved in terrorism against Saddam - just like the African National Congress was - but I haven't seen any specific link between al-Maliki and terrorism. I would prefer to keep it out on that basis AndrewRT(Talk) 19:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
agreed.Komaknacon 11:36, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Members of the Daawa party are being investigated by the U.S. government for terrorism right now. It is not POV or vandalism. Blanking sentences out - what you did - is considered vandalism. Lft6771 05:02, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- Vandalism is bad faith editing. POV disputes are not vandalism - please see WP:VAND for more information. AndrewRT(Talk) 22:16, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- I presume you are referring to this story which relates to the 1993 Kuwaiti embasy bombing by Dawa. How is this personally linked to al-Maliki? It is relevant to Dawa which is why it is mentioned in that article. AndrewRT(Talk) 22:22, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Secret letter from Maliki
[edit]This is copy of a recently found secret letter from Maliki to Muqtada Sadr and Iranian embassy in Baghdad, in which he suggests that heads of Sadr Militias take refuge in Iran for a temporarily period in order to not be arrested or killed by Americans (in their new campaign agaist terrotists), and not lose current positions they already got. http://www.peyamner.com/filesbank/img/200207035424.JPG
But I dont know how to reflect this in the article. Varmalo 14:21, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- Create a section called "Relationship with Shi'a militias" or something along those lines and explain it, with proper sources. --NEMT 05:48, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, this is a really good source, signed by the man himself. To be honest everyone had their suspicions, but this is gold. It will also be an awsome idea to mention the two or three (maybe more incidents) where Maliki urged the US government and gave them trouble until the release of dozens of Iranian officials arrested and found out via interrogation to be intelligence officials. many found in Dawa and similar party offices - including a few Sunni ones as well. I'll try find sources for that, and you mind if I go spreading that letter? Take care, and great work! Pink Princess (talk) 10:03, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Just cleaned up
[edit]I am not a wiki fan, but vandalism I hate even more. Just took off "infidel Shiite" from the name of the guy next to his photo.

He is a bad man. Even worse than Saddam. He supports shiite terrorists who kill americans and hes been arresting those who oppose him or even said anything. He kills civilians. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.84.137.60 (talk) 01:20, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Removed statement about Maliki's videographer
[edit]I did not find any references that said Maliki had a personal videographer capture the hanging, either a reference that said the tape was put on in his office. 69.244.38.32 06:00, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Maliki didn't have a videographer tape the hanging. The video from the hanging was captured on the cell phone of an extremely high ranking official. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 214.13.200.200 (talk) 12:35, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Official visits
[edit]On Maliki calling Iran a dear friend--"it illustrates that the regimes deriving legitimacy from different versions of democracy in the Middle East can be warm friends."
Does it really illustrate that? Really? Me thinks this needs a citation. Framed0000 (talk) 23:03, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Military operations
[edit]This article needs to be expanded to include the operations that Maliki ordered the ISF to carry out in Spring 2008, particularly in Basra, Mosul, Sadr City and Maysan province. The section about "stability of the coalition depends on an alliance between Sadr and Hakim" seems dubious given the large-scale fighting between the Mahdi Army and the Iraqi Security Forces recently.Lawrencema (talk) 00:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
ordinal
[edit]He's not really the first prime minister of Iraq, now is he? He's at least the third since the US occupation. --Alhutch (talk) 19:50, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Right, he is not the first prime minister of Iraq, even if one only counts the period after 2003 (in fact Iraq has had prime ministers since the 1920s). However, for the past few months, anonymous editors have been restoring the "1st" when it is removed. --Cam (talk) 00:21, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Authoritarian claims
[edit]The details of this article shoudl be included in the rticle. Smartse (talk) 11:30, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
This is a fantastic piece by the respected scholar Toby Dodge of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The piece hits on the authoritarian bit for sure. - http://www.opendemocracy.net/toby-dodge/resistible-rise-of-nuri-al-maliki Bsimpson82 (talk) 16:34, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Ties with Iran
[edit]A statement about al-Maliki as a puppet of the Iranian government was removed in the first paragraph of the page. This page should be watched for POV statements. fussbalspieler7 (talk) 14:15, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
NPOV Dispute - Opening paragraph
[edit]The last sentences of the opening paragraph currently read "In June 2014, the United States has asked for Maliki to give up his premiership in favor of someone who could better represent the Iraqi people. The problems that have arisen are all political, and the terrorists are now Sunnis. Nouri has been the premier of a democratic Iraq for 8 years, so it would seem sensible to transition him out." The first sentence needs a citation or it should be removed. As far as I can tell, the last two sentences have been in that paragraph for quite some time, but they seem to lack a neutral point of view. Xijjix (talk) 23:42, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- It appears that sentences 2-3 have been removed already. I am re-wording sentence 1 and adding a reference. The US does not speak with a single voice; this is the opinion of US officials in the executive branch ("the Obama administration", as WSJ puts it). Furthermore, there is no report that they made this request to Maliki. Although they may have, privately, it is not verifiable. Now it reads "In June 2014, United States officials said that Maliki should give up his premiership." I hope this resolves the NPOV issue. I'm going to remove the tag, please restore it if you disagree. Thundermaker (talk) 14:24, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
"al-Maliki" or just "Maliki"
[edit]Could we please make up our minds about whether or not his surname should be rendered as "Maliki" or "al-Maliki" in the article body? What is stylistically correct? Colipon+(Talk) 22:29, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
- Done Changed Maliki to al-Maliki in about 20 places. Thundermaker (talk) 14:33, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Incumbent
[edit]After searching a lot around, I came to the conclusion that al-Maliki is still Vice President. I changed the infobox to "Incumbent" as the apparent official Vice President website still features him here: [2]. Also press agency AFP refers to him as Vice President, and today Turkish Foreign Minister mentioned him with that title. I'll introduce a short paragraph now to add these facts and sources. Ilyacadiz (talk) 14:10, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
- Done, in lead paragraph and under (now) "Later Duties", with several sources Ilyacadiz (talk) 19:46, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Election results
[edit]Election results are completely missing in the whole article. They're missing for 2005, 2010 and 2014. They would explain why al-Maliki did not want to leave office, as he had clearly won the 2014 elections with the by far strongest political alliance. Actually, it is indeed not the best democratic fashion for a ceremonial President to nominate anyone else then the person, who had contestest the elections as the top candidate of his alliance. I understand that he would not have been able to reach a majority in parliament, but one can imagine that in a western country this would have been a scandal, to name a successor, while the predecessor did not even announce his resignation. --SamWinchester000 (talk) 02:39, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
