RAF stations are not chiefly protected from intruders by the RAF Regiment. This task has historically fallen to the RAF Police and duty personnel of any trade. Increasingly, the Military Police Guard Service fulfil this role. The RAF Regiment's task of airfield defence takes place in a deployed environment; in the UK they have a training role.

Installations such as Remote Radar Heads are not RAF stations. RAF stations are always manned and even some manned RAF units are not granted the status of being a station. Greenshed 17:16, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that whether a location qualified for the title 'station' or not depended on the number of personnel stationed there and the permanence/extent of the installations. A RRH with at most two or three personnel probably did not, whereas an earlier Chain Home location with perhaps ten or twenty personnel did.
