Bernward Doors

[edit]

two-leaf door

  • Comment: This would be best on 14 August when the doors will open again, but that may take too long. We could consider to show just one detail - they are all on the commons - but the first-ever combination is what makes it special.

5x expanded by Furius (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 08:14, 15 May 2014 (UTC).

  • If we waited till 14 August, then a DYK something like ... that the Bernward Doors reopen today? might be effective? Also, I've still got a bit of work to do on this one - I might not get around to it until the weekend. Furius (talk) 08:53, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Good to go. The usual excellent work, but maybe wait a bit, perhaps until the re-opening. The expulsion of Adam & Eve is the classic detail - covered in Ernst Gombrich's Story of Art, and no doubt Gardner' and all the usual suspects. I will add some quotes from such, but I probably won't have time for a bit. Johnbod (talk) 13:34, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
"... doors of Hildesheim Cathedral" with no "the" is more idiomatic - changed. Johnbod (talk) 13:36, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Shouldn't it be "on the left" and "on the right" or "(left)" and "(right)"? Furius (talk) 14:58, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
  • If the article is still unstable (a great deal of editing over the past couple of days, and Furius may not be done yet with the work), then approval should wait until things settle down. More important, perhaps, is that August 14 is too far away; holding for special occasions is for a maximum of six weeks, which is before the end of June. So hooks should be proposed with that in mind: this will run before they reopen again. (Note: Furius is correct about "on the left" and "on the right" over "left" and "right"; the parentheses wouldn't work here.) BlueMoonset (talk) 06:27, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I have now finished everything I intended to do - but it may be that others continue to make additions, corrections. Furius (talk) 08:05, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I look forward to reading, but it will not be today. Perhaps we can come up with a more interesting hook, the above was just a placeholder, not to miss the time for a nomination. What do you think of doing the Column for the opening then? (although the doors would have made more sense ;) ) - Expand in July, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:26, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Cain murders Abel

ALT1: ... that 16 biblical scenes are cast in bronze on the Romanesque Bernward Doors, juxtaposing Cain's murder of Abel (pictured) and the Annunciation? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:52, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Full review needed of ALT1 plus the article as a whole: there have been significant additions since the original review, which did not explicitly cover any of the DYK criteria, including such things as sourcing and close paraphrasing. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:59, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Expansion new enough (for 12 May) and long enough. Not self-nom so no QPQ required. No problem with disambig links. It is not possible to check fully for copyvio because almost all the sources are offline. Exceptions are English translations in citations #17 and #18 (no copyvio there), citation #28 (deadlink) and in the Bibliography the scan of Fehr 1978 which is untranslateable with Google Translate. So no copyvio found. Issues: (1) Citation #28 is a deadlink. (2) I cannot find a citation to say that the Cain and Abel panel is juxtaposed with the Annunciation panel. I do not personally agree with the WP rule that images cannot be used as citations, although your image has satisfied me personally that the hook is true - and I am sure that your image would satisfy readers, many of whom could visit the cathedral and check it out. But so long as the WP rule stands, I must abide by it - so please could you kindly provide a citation to confirm the juxtaposition of those two panels or give us another hook? If you can resolve issues (1) and (2), this nom can be passed. Nice article - please help us speed it through this DYK process. --Storye book (talk) 15:52, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
We could say
ALT2: ... that 16 biblical scenes are cast in bronze on the Romanesque Bernward Doors, including Cain's murder of Abel (pictured)?
I am not in the mood to fight the rules, and can only hope that this one can go, possible citation [1] ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:48, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Good to go for ALT2, AGF for citation #42. To admin: I'd personally like this one not to be held back until 14 August when the doors open again, to give front-page readers time to organise a visit to the site on that date, if they are able to do so. (Just my opinion, though). --Storye book (talk) 11:56, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Note: this cannot be held until August 14, as there is a six-week limit on special occasion holds (already noted above). It should run normally. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:13, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
