Cirsium funkiae
- ... that the funky thistle's (pictured) name honors the "funky" Vicki Funk and the plant's funky appearance? Source: "Named for Ackerfield’s botany mentor Vicki Funk, the thistle and its cousin Cirsium culebraensis, could help researchers understand how climate change is altering Colorado’s ecology. ... Funk was, well, funky. She was a world-renowned researcher with a penchant for Hawaiian shirts and a willingness to get out on the dance floor at conferences. Ackerfield recalled her habit of singing to herself when pricked by thistle spines: “Ooh ee, ooh ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang!” “Once it started becoming apparent I was looking at new species, I knew I had to name the funkiest one after her,” Ackerfield said." Gilbert, David (15 February 2022). "Researchers have found a new plant in Colorado's high country: the "funky thistle"". The Colorado Sun.

- Comment: You are welcome to propose ALT hooks, as I struggled with properly wording this. I wanted to write "the discoverer's "funky" mentor" but Ackerfield explicitly refused this designation, rightly so. Since that is off the table, I could possibly reword it to another term, but I'm not entirely sure as to what. Someone who is more well versed in the terminology educate me! Thank you in advance to the reviewer!

- @Ornithoptera: Its neutral, new, long enough and well referenced. The interesting hook has a reliable ref. I see no close paraphrasing and it looks compliant with DYK requirements. Nice contribution. Victuallers (talk) 10:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Comments only. IMO the hook works even if you remove the word "funky" especially if you add quote marks to the first mention of the word. DYK that the newly named "Funky" thistle (pictured) honors the flamboyant Vicki Funk and the plant's funky appearance? I would choose the second pic as it shows the funky flower head and it is more eye catching. HTH. I think Jennifer A. needs her own article! and Vicky Funk's article should mention the honour given by her mentor. Victuallers (talk) 10:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- I definitely welcome the alternative hook Victuallers! You are welcome to propose it, I don't mind! Also Jennifer Ackerfield definitely deserves her own article, if you wish take the initiative please do let me know! Ornithoptera (talk) 10:49, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Its only a rephrase - you could just change the hook, but here is the alt hook. Jennifer Ackerfield would get an article but there is no picture available and I really want to encourage visible women. (She won't be "discovered" yet:-) ) Victuallers (talk) 11:04, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

- @Ornithoptera: any objection to me using the specific epithet? I always get this inner delight at seeing wacky specific epithets (Zoosphaerium darthvaderi), although it might just be me... theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 02:32, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
