Sandbox
I'm making changes here (so far, I've added a series field), but would appreciate someone else taking a look at it before I add it to the template. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 16:50, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
URL option
I confess that templates are too much tech for me, so I'm loath to try and fix this problem myself. The url parameter doesn't seem to work - at least in preview. I also wonder if it might be an idea to have the url link to the producer of the sign (not the title), given that in many circumstances they're more likely to have a website. Would there also be a way to link the title to an image on wikicommons if one was available? Cheers, Ranger Steve (talk) 08:58, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I think this entire template is being revamped after the move from {{cite visual}}. I will see if we can work some alternative linking schemes. Thanks for the suggestion. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 20:07, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Update to citation/core
This has been discussed, so I made a sandbox update:
- Current
{{Cite sign |title=The Underwater Archaeology Centre |date=2006 |medium=Plaque outside museum |distributor=The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology |location=[[Fort Victoria (Isle of Wight)|Fort Victoria]]}}
The Underwater Archaeology Centre (Plaque outside museum). Fort Victoria. 2006. {{cite sign}}
: Unknown parameter |distributor=
ignored (|publisher=
suggested) (help)
{{Cite sign/sandbox2 |title=The Underwater Archaeology Centre |year=2006 |medium=Plaque outside museum |distributor=The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology |location=[[Fort Victoria (Isle of Wight)|Fort Victoria]]}}
The Underwater Archaeology Centre (Plaque outside museum). Fort Victoria: The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology. 2006.
This makes the template compliant with Help:Citation Style 1 including features such as series, id, ref and more. The titles of paintings and statues are in italics, so I followed the example with signs. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 17:15, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- Looks good to me. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:13, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- If there is no other discussion, I will update this in a few days. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:23, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Can a grave or historical marker be counted as a sign?
There are some pretty frequent debates about the use of Find a Grave on articles and this template was offered as a possible way to "cite" the information from the grave stone. Since a grave stone in most cases contains the Birth death dates and sometimes the location and are generally in public areas the thought was that this template might be appropriate to replace some or all the references for the articles that currently cite find a grave but I am not sure that is true and I'm not sure it wouldn't qualify as original research. Anyone know the answer to this one? --Kumioko (talk) 21:47, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
