- ^ Surgeons served six months as marine privates prior to university and a further six months after taking their Staatsexamen
- ^ After passing the exam for sea officers, Fähnriche would be elegible for promotion to Leutnant rank. As passed midshipmen they were allowed to carry officer's sidearms and were thus known as Säbelfähnriche. The rank of Oberfähnrich zur See was introduced in 1920.
- ^ Secondary education reduced the time spend in active service to one year
