Forts is a 2D real-time strategy[1] video game developed and published by Australian studio EarthWork Games.[2][3] It was released on April 19, 2017. Forts started development in March, 2003, as a game originally based on early bridge building games.[4] Forts had sold 120,000 copies as of October 6, 2017.[5][6] In Forts, the player builds a base, defends it, and acquires weapons through tech trees in an attempt to destroy the opponent's reactor.
The game has been reviewed by CG Magazine and Kotaku, the former of which described Forts's gameplay as being similar to the Worms series.[7][8]
Gameplay
[edit]The core gameplay of Forts is similar to many real-time strategy games: build up resources, acquire new technologies, and build something to attack the opponent while defending yourself from their attacks. There are weapons like missiles, lasers, cannons, and mortars to attack, with things like reinforced walls, sand bags, and machine guns to shoot down projectiles and defend yourself. The point of the game is to destroy the opponent's core, which can be done through direct damage, like hitting it with a laser, indirect damage, like setting fire to it, or through making it fall to the ground by destroying the supporting fort around it. Teams are able to choose one of many commanders, each with their own powers, in order to augment their playstyle.[9]
Tournaments
[edit]On May 27 2017, Earthwork Games started hosts their own official Forts tournaments.[10] Starting with the twentieth official tournament, players must be ranked in the top 100 of any previous season in order to enter.[11]
Post-release content
[edit]The Moonshot DLC was released on 18 June 2019. This update included four new weapons, three new commanders, portals, a new gameplay mode, a new HUD for teams, and a new soundtrack.[12]
The Pro HUD DLC was released on 24 June 2020.
