Lee Taeyong (Korean: 이태용) is a South Korean rapper, singer, dancer, songwriter, composer and producer from South Korean boy group, NCT. Lee Taeyong was first publicized as a member of SM Entertainment's pre-debut team SMROOKIES on December 3, 2013. He debuted as a member of NCT's first sub-unit, NCT U on April 9, 2016.
Early life
[edit]Taeyong was born on July 1, 1995 in Seoul, South Korea. He was street casted and joined SM Entertainment as a trainee in 2012. On December 3, 2013, he was first introduced as a member of SM's pre-debut team along with featuring members Seulgi and Jeno. He graduated high school in School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2014.
Career
[edit]2013 - 2015: SM ROOKIES
[edit]Taeyong was one of the first trainees to be announced as a part of SM Rookies in 2013, one year after joining the company. Along with the other male trainees, he performed as an opening and supporting act on SMTOWN Week. On July 2014, SM released a rap performance of Taeyong "Open the Door" and a dance performance "Super Moon" alongside members Johnny and Hansol on August. Taeyong has also participated as an opening and supporting act on SM Town Live World Tour IV as a member of SM Rookies. In October 2014, Red Velvet released their second single "Be Natural", a remake from the original S.E.S. song where Taeyong participated in rapping. Taeyong also appeared on Mnet show EXO 90:2014 with the pre-debut team. In July 2015, SM announced that SM Rookies will hold a regular concert titled "SM Rookies Show"[1], the concert series started in August 2015 and concluded in February 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.
2016 - 2018: NCT Debut (NCT U, NCT 127, NCT 2018), Featuring Singles
[edit]On January 27, 2016, SM's founder and producer, Lee Soo-man announced plans for new boy group NCT. [2] NCT's first sub-unit, NCT U released their single, The 7th Sense in April 9, 2016 which Taeyong participated in rap lyrics writing. In July of 2016, the second sub-unit, NCT 127 was announced to debut with title song Fire truck and debut album NCT #127[3], he later on announced taking the role of the leader of the sub-unit.[4]
In May 2017, Taeyong released a collaboration track with EDM musician Hitchhiker entitled "AROUND" through SM STATION 2.[5] In August 2017, he released his second STATION 2 participation with song "Cure", a collaboration with singer-songwriter Yoo Young-jin.[6]
In February 2018, NCT announced plans on a large-scale project, through NCT 2018[7] comprising all members from NCT U, NCT 127, NCT DREAM and additional members Kun, Jungwoo, and Lucas. The unit released a studio album NCT 2018 Empathy and Taeyong took part in 5 out of 6 lead singles throughout the unit promotion.
In August 2018, SM announced that Hitchhiker will be releasing a new song "Time" featuring Taeyong, and Girls' Generation members Sunny and Hyoyeon[8]. The song was played as a theme song for the event parade of 2018 SPECTRUM Dance Music Festival.
In December 2018, it was reported that Taeyong will feature and participated in rap lyric writing for TVXQ's Yunho's solo song "City Lights" that was released under the special album "New Chapter #2: The Truth of Love".[9] The two performed the song in March 2019 on Seoul stops of TVXQ! Concert – Circle – #with.
2019 - Present: First solo track, SuperM
[edit]On July 8, 2019, SM STATION 3 has announced the next song set to release on July 18 and is revealed to be performed by Taeyong with the title "Long Flight". It was later on revealed to be his first ever solo track which he personally participated in composing and lyric writing.[10] The R&B / Hip-hop genre song is set to convey the message, “You won’t be bored if you go on a long flight with me.” Long Flight concluded the third season of SM STATION.
On August 8, 2019, SM unveiled plans on launching global project boy group SuperM with the partnership of Capitol Music Group. It is set to debut in October 2019 with members from SM Entertainment boy groups SHINee (Taemin), EXO (Baekhyun and Kai), NCT 127 (Taeyong and Mark) and WayV (Ten and Lucas) and is aimed for the American music scene.
