Tanvi Gandhi
[edit]Tanvi Gandhi (Born 1979) [1] is an Independent Film Producer, Executive Producer, Creative Producer, and Writer-In-Progress. Her notable films include Mardaani 2, Super 30, Udta Punjab, Bombay Velvet and Queen.
As an Independent Producer, her latest production, an anthology of three short films (A Short Hello, Tea and a Rose, Dinner in Lockdown) written and directed by Indrani Ray through the pandemic of 2020 and 2021, was released on Voot Select. Selected to showcase at festivals across the world, they were applauded amidst rave reviews. Her 4th short film 'Jaan Jigar' written and directed by Ranjan Chandel, won the Best Film by a Debut director at the Mumbai film festival in 2018. It too is streaming on Voot Select. She recently wrapped her next in New Delhi, an Estonian short film written by Tushar Prakash & Anna Hints and directed by Anna Hints, which will make it's debut at the festivals later this year. She is currently working on multiple projects that are in development and early prep.
Early Life.
[edit]Born in Delhi, Tanvi Gandhi is the daughter of engineer Rajan Gandhi and homemaker Aradhana Gandhi. After completing her schooling from the famous Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi, she went on to graduate in English Literature from the renowned college Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Tanvi is also the granddaughter of noted senior Congress leader, Minister, Governor Jagannath Kaushal. She is also the niece of noted actor Natasha Rastogi. Her sister Gayatri Gandhi is India's first certified tidying and decluttering consultant by Japanese tidying expert Marie Kondo
Career
[edit]After a long 3 year stint in dramatics and stage performances in Delhi from 1997 - 2000 with Delhi Music Theatre where she acted and danced in the Indian adaptation of Broadway musicals like Fame, West Side Story, Grease, Fiddler on the Roof choreographed by ace choreographer and director of choreography Ivan Pulinkala, Tanvi began her career as part of the newsroom in 2000 at the famous Indian news channel NDTV. She worked there for 3.5 years both behind and in front of the camera disseminating news. She then got an opportunity to ride on the arrival of cable television into the country by working on BBC's groundbreaking shows 'Ji Mantri Ji', 'Ji Pradhan Mantri Ji' based on their famous British TV series 'Yes, Minister' and 'Yes, Prime Minister'. The Indian show starred renowned actor late Farooq Sheikh in the leading role.
The success of the show and her learnings from it inspired her to make the shift to Bombay, where she has stayed since. Her move to Mumbai in 2004 coincided with the rise of the iconic youth Channel MTV. With MTV, her creativity and vision got it's own distinctive direction where she worked on multiple projects, which resonated with the voice of the country’s youth [2].
After 5 years at MTV, Tanvi ventured into Film Production in 2009 dabbling with independent productions. In 2012 she joined Phantom Films, one of India’s leading production houses as the in-house Producer. As part of Phantom Films, she worked on some path-breaking movies like the national award winner Queen, Udta Punjab, Raman Raghav 2.0, Super 30. Post her 6.5 year stint there, she progressed to Yash Raj Films, the largest house of movie production and distribution in India. In her role as the first female Executive Producer ever in the system, she produced the critically and commercially acclaimed Rani Mukerjee starrer Mardaani 2 as part of her work at YRF [3].
She then moved on to work as an Independent Film Producer. Her first independent production, 'Jaan Jigar' won the Best Film by a Debut Director award at the Mumbai Film Festival[4]. It recently won a Best Film Nomination at the Dallas Fort Worth South Asian Film Festival. Her last production, a beautiful anthology of 3 short films based on Love in the Lockdown[5] has been officially selected for screening at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, Atlanta South Asian Film Festivals, South Asian Film Festival of Montreal Montreal, Dallas Fort-Worth South Asian Film Festival, Female Eye Film Festival felicitated for various Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor nominations. She was mentioned by Elle Magazine as “one of the most powerful women in Bollywood”.
Production services in the UAE
[edit]Tanvi has also set up a Production Services company in UAE where she is specializing in providing Line Production assistance and execution. Through this she has worked on multiple Bollywood projects including Vikramvedha (2023), starring Hritik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. She also has multiple other projects in the pipeline.
Priya the Superhero and More
[edit]Tanvi has also been the producer behind Priya, a comic series featuring the first Indian female superhero dressed in traditional Indian attire. Victim of sexual abuse, she talks about pertinent and socially relevant topics like rape, acid attack and human trafficking. With multiple editions, Priya has been featured in over 800 stories by numerous leading news outlets. At the end of 2020, she also co-produced an animated short and an AR Comic on Covid 19 called Priya’s Mask[6]. This was backed by the US State Department and the film was voiced by multiple leading Bollywood stars including Vidya Balan and Mrunal Thakur. She has been featured in Al Jazeera talking about the same. The current latest edition, 'Priya and the Twirling Wind' on Climate Change has been supported by noted environmentalist and activist Dr Vandana Shiva. The short animation has been awarded the Best Animated Short at the UK Asian Film Festival in May 2022.
