Orel Marcel Tsabari (Hebrew: אוראל מרסל צברי;[2] born 28 November 1993) is an Israeli comedian, actor, and Internet personality.

Early life

[edit]

Tsabari was born in Rehovot to a Yemenite Jewish father, Yakir, and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother, Miriam.[3][4] He has a younger sister.[5] At the age of eight in 2001, he made his television debut with a guest appearance on the children's show BaHeder Shel Hanny [he] hosted by Hanny Nahmias.[1] The following year, his family moved to Europe due to his parents' work as Hebrew teachers.[6] They spent two years in Belgium and one year in France, thanks to which Tsabari learnt French.[3] An unpopular child, he took an interest in comedy and began practicing his impressions by watching recordings of Eretz Nehederet.[3][4] Upon returning to Rehovot, he enrolled in high school at Yeshiva HaDarom [he],[5] where he took a year of advanced Arabic.[3] In 2011, when he was 17, he auditioned for the ninth season of Kokhav Nolad to imitate judge Margalit Tzan'ani in front of her, to which she reacted positively.[3]

During his mandatory service in the Israel Defense Forces, Tsabari served in Unit 8200 thanks to his knowledge of Arabic.[7] After working at a Club Med ski resort in the French Alps for six months,[3][8] he studied at Ariel University, from which he obtained a bachelor's degree in Middle East and foreign policy.[6] He began his comedy work as a student by creating videos with Yoni Harlap for the company Shrutonim [he].[6] He also had a recurring segment for two months on Assaf Harel [he]'s show Laila Tov Im Assaf Harel [he] on Channel 10.[3] During his third year of university, he did an internship at the municipality of Rehovot and produced social media content. This included comedic videos starring a character of his creation named Irit, which went viral in Israel.[7] After graduating, he worked for the Israeli Ministry of Defense for a year before quitting to fully dedicate himself to his entertainment career.[6]

Career

[edit]

In 2018, Tsabari began participating in the children's show Ta'asheh Li Sub alongside Kevin Rubin and Tom Baum [he].[9] In January 2019, he became a recurring guest in Rubin's YouTube vlogs. The same year, he had a supporting role at Festigal.[9] In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel, he was part of the entertainment team on Arutz HaYeladim, including a role in the channel's show Samson HaGibor. He also appeared as a panelist on the talk shows M'siba Im Itay Levy on Channel 24 and HaDuakh HaYomi [he] on Channel 13, and as a guest on the Disney Channel Israel talk show Dean v'Angel [he]. The same year, he provided the Hebrew voice for Ronaldo in the 2019 animated film Pets United. From 2020 to 2022, he played Tom Peretz for four seasons in the teen series Ziggy [he], which aired on the Israeli version of TeenNick. In 2021, he played Tapiro in the second season of Shababnikim.[10] He also provided the Hebrew voice for Mario Zucchini in the 2017 animated film Animal Crackers. The same year, he portrayed Antiochus IV Epiphanes in Rinat Gabay [he]'s musical HaMakabim, which is based on the story of Hanukkah.

In 2022, Tsabari competeted in that year's season of Rokdim Im Kokhavim, the Israeli version of Dancing with the Stars. He and his dance partner Lital Lechtman Cohen finished sixth, being eliminated just before the quarter-finals.[11]

Tsabari appeared as a guest on multiple episodes of the Channel 12 show Ze Lo Ulpan Shishi [he] in 2024.[12] In July, a clip from the show of him prank-calling the Katara Hills Hotel in Qatar by purporting to book a room for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar went viral.[13]

Other ventures

[edit]

Advertising

[edit]

Tsabari has appeared in several advertising campaigns in Israel. In 2019, he was part of a campaign for the Israeli parking app Cellopark [he].[14] In 2022, he participated in a commercial for Shufersal alongside Israeli actress Liat Har Lev [he; fr]. In 2024, it was reported that he would be part of a campaign for the Bank of Jerusalem.

Advocacy

[edit]

Tsabari has used his platform to bring attention to fatphobia in Israeli society. He has expressed disinterest in becoming thin and often mentions the lack of plus-size clothing options in Israel, advocating for change in this area.[8] He has mentioned that he receives positive comments from fat children and their parents, who consider him a role model.[10][11]

Personal life

[edit]

Tsabari grew up religious but does not practice as an adult, though he has a strong belief in HaShem.[3] He is a supporter of the Hapoel Marmorek F.C. from Rehovot and served as its announcer when it was promoted to the Liga Leumit in 2009.[4] He has expressed an affinity for languages. Besides his native Hebrew, he is fluent in French and Arabic, and he also knows some Spanish.[4] He began dating Israeli actress Sivan Tam in 2019 and they reside in Rehovot as of 2021.[5] They got married in June 2022.[15] The day after the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel that started the Israel–Hamas war, he volunteered for reserve service despite having been exempted, and he was assigned to intelligence.[16]
