I Love Chile News is a Chilean based information network made up of volunteers, translators and citizen journalists that follow, report and summarize the news and events that are happening around Chile. The project was started by American Daniel H. Brewington[1] and Chilean Pamela Lagos-Rioseco[2] in 2007 growing out of the demand for news and information in English about Chile. In July 2009 I Love Chile was officially listed as a limited liability company. I Love Chile News produces Chile's only English language newspaper on a monthly basis
Its objectives are twofold: first to promote Chile in English to the rest of the world. Chile currently has limited sites providing news and information in English to the rest of the world. There are limited resources for people seeking to visit, relocate and work Chile that do not speak Spanish. It has a team of dedicated volunteers that provide daily information on its website, weekly in its digital magazine and monthly in its print newspaper. I Love Chile see its self as a supplemental information source[3] to main stream media in Chile rather than an oppositional role to the traditional media.
Its second objective is to promote English in Chile. Only 3% of Chile currently speaks English fluently which hampers its development on the world stage. Using online tools such as online radio, online video and WordPress blogging software I Love Chile is able to provide all Chileans a tool to practice their English online. (Note: that as of January 2012 more than 56% of the Chile has daily access to the internet - Source: Chilean Ministry of Telecommunications.) By providing these tools online and by providing Chilean content in English, it provides an education platform that will enable all Chileans of any social standing the opportunity to 'practice' they are learning in schools, universities and English institutes for free.
Moving Forward
I Love Chile aims to expand to regional online magazines with I Love Valparaiso already online. Helping to provide content in English across the boards of Chile, I Love Peru, I Love Brazil and I Love Montenagro will mirror the platform of I Love Chile and will be online in the last quarter of 2012, all providing local content from Peru, Brazil and Montenegro in English.
