Weirds (band)

[edit]

Weirds are a four piece rock band from Leeds, UK, formed in 2013, consisting of lead vocalist and keyboardist Aidan Razzall, guitarist Zachary Thomas, bassist Matthew Vaughan, and drummer Alex Dutton-Taylor. They are currently signed to Alcopop! Records. To date, the band have released one studio album, one extended play and numerous singles. The band cite The Black Angels and David Lynch as some of their influences.[1][2]

Biography

[edit]

The band have described their sound as 'progressive dissonance' and 'amphibious', however across their collected material, their sound generally falls into noise rock, psychedelic, sludge, post punk and krautrock genres. Jamie Milton of DIY Magazine described their sound as 'a deranged take on sludgy, in-your-face noise.'[3]

The band are known for their visceral live performances, often resulting in the entire band playing within the audience themselves. Mike Diver of The Quietus described Weirds' live performance as 'this is attack music, and to feel the bite is fantastic.'[4]

Weirds have performed at major festivals in the UK and Europe, including Reeperbahn Festival, Download Festival, The Great Escape, 2000 Trees, Truck Festival, Leefest: The Neverland, Handmade Festival, Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia and Live at Leeds. Weirds have also toured with The Wytches, Pulled Apart By Horses, Tigercub, God Damn, DZ Deathrays, Spring King and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes.

Weirds debut album 'Swarmculture' was released on May 26th 2017 on Alcopop! Records. It was widely praised, with Kerrang! Magazine hailing it as 'one of the best British debut albums of 2017',[5] and 'an album that creeps and insinuates itself, slowly and methodically under your skin'.[6] Upset Magazine described it as a 'phenomenal debut'[7] and 'in Swarmculture, Weirds have declared themselves exceptional in their world of blistering, otherworldly rock'.[7]

'Swarmculture' contains the three singles 'Valley of Vision', 'Phantom' and 'Old World Blues'.

The album was recorded over a five week period at Nave Studios in Leeds, with producer Matt Peel, known for his previous work with Eagulls, Bad Breeding and Pulled Apart By Horses. Following the release of the album, Weirds toured the UK and Europe extensively, both headlining and supporting larger acts.

The artwork for 'Swarmculture' was created with the help of Steve Ludwin, an internationally renowned venomist and snake enthusiast, known for his previous video work with the US band A Place To Bury Strangers. Ludwin also featured in the VICE documentary 'Getting High Injecting Snake Venom'[8]. The artwork features a Costan Rican palm viper inside an infinitely mirrored box, and was shot in London by photographer Joseph Ironmonger.

The band's Facebook page was hacked repeatedly during their debut album campaign, receiving widespread coverage from the likes of Vice Magazine.[9]

Weirds are currently working on their sophomore album, anticipated in late 2018.
