Oksana Volodymyrivna Miiakovska (October 30, 1919, Kyiv — April 5, 2020, New York, USA) was a prominent figure in Ukrainian emigration and an archivist of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (UVAN).
Biography
[edit]Oksana Miiakovska was born on October 30, 1919, in Kyiv in the family of Volodymyr Miiakovskyi, Ukrainian literary critic, historian and archivist, member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (1947), full member of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (1948), and Inna Leontiivna Holoshvilova (Holoshvili), daughter of Leontii Holoshvili and Anna Osaulenko[1].
In Kyiv, Oksana Miyakovska lived at 13 Yaroslaviv Val Street, where a commemorative plaque to her father was erected on May 14, 2015[2][3]. Oksana graduated from high school and entered the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. In early 1943, she graduated from the Agricultural Institute and worked as a laboratory assistant at the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine in Kytayiv near Kyiv[4].
In 1943 Oksana Miiakovska moved to Lviv with her parents. In 1944 she came to Berlin with her husband, doctor Serafym Rymarenko. The same year, after the tragic death of her husband, she moved to her parents in Prague. Due to the Red Army offensive in 1945, Oksana Miyakovskaya and her family came to Vimperk, then to Passau, Tittling, Munich, and finally ended up in Augsburg. There she married the artist Myroslav Radysh[5].
In early 1951, Oksana Miiakovska-Radysh emigrated to the USA with her parents, husband and son and settled in New York. Her sons Volodymyr and Ihor Radysh were born here.
In New York, Ms Oksana worked for a long time in the editorial office of the «Novyi Zhurnal» («The New Review») and later in the publishing house «Prolog», which was continued by the publishing house «Suchasnist» («Modernity»). In 1970-1972, with Olena Nesina, Ms Oksana made an inventory of the archive of Volodymyr Vynnychenko, which was stored in the Bakhmetieff Archive of Columbia University. Oksana Miyakovska-Radysh gave speeches at the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences and other scientific institutions of the diaspora. During 1990-1996 she prepared «News from the Academy» and wrote the memoirs «Looking Back», published in the magazine «Suchasnist»[5].
Oksana Zabuzhko dedicated her book «Yak rubaly vyshnevyy sad, abo Dovha doroha z Bad-Emsa» to the memory of Oksana Volodymyrivna Miiakovska-Radysh[6].
Family
[edit]Oksana's first husband was Serafym Rymarenko, a doctor. Her second husband was Myroslav Radysh (October 21, 1910 – 1956) —a painter and theatrical decorator from Sniatyn (Galicia). Children - Bohdan Serafymovych Rymarenko, Volodymyr Myroslavovych Radysh, Ihor Myroslavovych Radysh[4].
