Chronicles of Syntax is a British science fiction web series written and created by Susan E. Clarke and featuring a large principal cast including Laura O'Donoughue, Daniel Tyler-Smith and British YouTube vlogger Liam Dryden.[1] The series was funded predominantly through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo, where it raised just under $25,000,[2] with the rest of the funding coming from the Multi Channel Network ChannelFlip. Consisting of one season of six approximately half-hour webisodes,[3] it premiered on ChannelFlip's YouTube original content channel The Multiverse on February 1, 2013 and was produced by iDare Productions, in association with Mini Productions.[4]
History
[edit]Susan E. Clarke first came up with the idea for Chronicles of Syntax while studying Theatre at Huddersfield University, where she wrote a pilot for what would be a prospective television series.[5] Wanting to make a series that would appeal to a wide selection of fandoms, Susan envisioned a world that blends post-apocalyptic science fiction, live action anime, massively multiplayer online gaming[6] and furries,[7] as well as drawing inspiration from her own favourite media, such as the works of Joss Whedon, Doctor Who and the Final Fantasy series of video games.[8]
After having the pilot read at a meeting of the trade union Equity,[9] it was decided that a trailer should be produced to better sell the show, so a series of auditions were held in order to find a cast capable of both performing the roles and taking on the demanding fight sequences that would be required of them.[10] It was at this time that many of the crew joined the project, including fight coordinator Ronin Traynor, graphics and visual effects artist Gary Mellor, costume designer Heather Bradley and award-winning film and video game composer Dan Bewick. A nine-month hiatus then followed, resulting in the development of a prequel audio series called Primary Faction, set in present day, with which to promote the main series. Primary Faction was released via YouTube in July 2011.[11] A trailer was then shot near Temple Works in Leeds in August 2011,[12] showing the 18 core characters fighting in a wasteland environment.[13] After response from the global online fanbase, it was decided to develop Primary Faction as a web series to be hosted on YouTube and crowdfunded through Indiegogo.[14]
Plot
[edit]The Fallen Angel Network (F.A.N.), a secret government facility charged with stopping the oncoming apocalypse, must gather a selection of people from within the Earth's population who hold traces of information locked deep in their DNA. They do not know who they are, and only when F.A.N., led by Sian Lovat (Laura O'Donoughue), finds them all can they access the information sent back from the future to save the world.
