Modi (born September 9, 1961, as Modi Frank in Los Angeles, California), is an American film director, producer, and photographer.
As the founder of Modivation Films, Modi has directed award-winning and occasionally controversial music videos, short films, and media content for alt rock, grunge, riot grrl and punk music groups such as Rollins Band and Smashing Pumpkins. Modi frequently collaborated with musician and spoken word artist Henry Rollins in videos such as Live At Luna Park[1]]. Modi directed Pretend We’re Dead[2] and Everglade[3] for the groundbreaking riot grrl group L7. The songs are from their 1992 third album Bricks are Heavy, produced by Butch Vig. This album appeared in Rolling Stone's May 1999 list of Essential Recordings of the 1990s, and is widely considered their classic. She directed Mountain Song[4] for Jane's Addiction and she directed the Smashing Pumpkins long form video Vieuphoria[5]. She directed music videos and promotional videos for Exene Cervenka[6] of X and The Knitters.
Modi’s short comedy films include the award winning Rosa Mi Amor[7] starring Manny "Chevrolet" Bruno. She has directed documentary films and public service announcements including Created Equal: the Cheryl Summerville Story[8] for the American Civil Liberties Union.
Modi’s body of work addresses such themes as punk rock, youth culture, and especially Los Angeles American subcultures. One of Modi’s trademarks as a director is a DIY ethic. She has no formal training in filmmaking and learned her trade under the guidance of Penelope Spheeris as Spheeris’ assistant before going on to direct her own projects. Modi's films have screened at the 1994 New York Underground Film Festival[9]; Antimatter[10]; Dances With Films[11]; and Independent Exposure[12]. Her short film Rosa Mi Amor has won Grand prize at the 1999 Berkeley Film and Video Festival[13] and First place at the 1994 New York Underground Film Festival[14].
