Councillor Sam Gorst is an elected local government City Councillor representing the political ward of Cressington within Liverpool City Council for the ruling Labour Party group. Councillor Sam Gorst was elected during the local government council elections in May 2019 with 42.64% of the overall vote.[1]
Locally, the ward of Cressington covers areas commonly known as Grassendale, Garston and Allerton. The population of the ward according to the 2011 census was 14,503. The ward area encompasses a small section of the L18 and a large section of the L19 outward postal code.
Councillor Sam Gorst currently sits on Education and Skills Select Committee[2]. He was previously appointed to the Neighbourhoods Select Committee, Equality Task Group, Universal Credit Task Group, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Overview & Scrutiny Committee[3] and Housing Select Committee as Assistant Cabinet Member for Housing.
Since being elected, Councillor Sam Gorst has not declared any acceptance of gifts or hospitality.
In 2020, He was suspended from the Labour Party over allegations of antisemitism[4]. He strongly denies all allegations[5]. He is a vocal campaigner on international issues such as the freedom of both the Palestinian and Yemeni people. Sam has a mixed heritage, his late mother, Shirley Gorst had Irish, Norwegian and Filipino roots. His father, Sam Mhagrh has Yemeni roots.
Sam describes himself as an eco-socialist humanist councillor. He values paternity, happy and healthy mental well-being, workplace safety and security, anti-racism, equality more generally, a sense of community, democracy, justice & trade unionism.
