[edit]

This was created as a backup copy of contents of Category:NRHP in progress, as of November 9, 2019. There were 247 items. All items in the category have since been removed from it, and the category has been deleted.

Explanation I had written out at Category page, when I was pressed at my Talk page:

This is a maintenance category which was used in 2016 for NRHP articles being expanded to use material from their NRHP registration documents, to remove them permanently from "NRIS-only" status. It was used as part of a truly temporary process in which NRHP document references were put into all "NRIS-only" articles appearing in a big batch, often all the ones in an entire U.S. state or two or three, using AutoWikiBrowser. The references were put in without immediately trying them, and some/many of them in fact had bad links, where the NRHP documents did not in fact exist where expected. But this category was put in to track them, and then a few editors worked to visit each of them and either develop where the NRHP document links worked, or to look for other references or take other action if the NRHP document links did not work. This process helped bring the number of NRIS-only articles down from 6,000(?) or some such number, down towards approximately 2000 at some point in 2017 or 2018 (and now it is further down to around 1500 in November 2019; the further reduction has been accomplished mostly without use of this category; see wp:NRHPPROGRESS for reporting on current numbers of "NRIS-only" articles). Articles in the category were in the category only for a fairly short period of time, maybe a month or less to get a batch done. For example, a couple editors tackled all the NRIS-only articles in Iowa, and an overlapping few editors did all of Wisconsin together.

The batch process could have continued, but stopped at some point, perhaps when it seemed all the states where active editors be recruited to collaborate this way were finished. After all the batch jobs that had been started were completed, then this category has been used by one or a very few editors to track individual NRHP articles which they individually were working on in a more idiosyncratic way, not always about the NRHP document needing to be added/finished. For example, to track where an article was incomplete, and intended to be "Under construction" until it had been improved more substantially, beyond having an NRHP reference included. Or where open research questions were stated in the article, which needed to be answered and removed as questions. Or where more development and/or linking was wanted, but it seemed more expeditious to develop some other article about an architect say, first, then come back. Or where an article was left very clearly incomplete, with major editing needed, when an editor had to leave off for a day or two or a week or so even. Just putting "under construction" tag would not be enough, because those tags are arbitrarily, automatically removed by a bot; this category "remembers" them better. During the period this category has been used this way, lots and lots of articles have come in and gone out.

An alternative approach would be to make a WikiProject subpage listing all the articles needing work, and remove the category. But that would be less convenient and would necessitate lots of edits updating the work page list. As of November 2019, the category is a bit large, and an editor or two is working to bring it down in size, maybe towards deleting the category altogether, or maybe so that just a very few articles would be in it, and each only for a very short period of time.
