Hey there! Feel free to ask any questions you may have here.
Hi! Thanks for creating the page! I was wondering if you could make a cool signature for me, because I just don't really understand what to do, and yours is really good. So if you don't mind, can you? Ross Rhodes (talk) 21:59, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Of course; I'll get to work on it. -download | sign! 22:13, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- How about this? User:Ross Rhodes/Signature. Feel free to edit it yourself, or tell me if you had anything else in mind. To use this signature, simply go to "my preferences" and add
{{subst:User:Ross Rhodes/Signature}}
into the "Signature" field. Afterwards check the "Raw signature" box, and you're done! -download | sign! 22:26, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks
[edit]Its good. Much better than what it used to be. Now it can stand out a little, which is what I wanted. :) Ross Rhodes (talk) 22:41, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How do I get it to show by adding the four tides (~ x 4)? Its just its come up with the old one in the sentence above. Ross Rhodes (talk) 22:44, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Here it is in step by step format:
- First, click on "my preferences" on your top bar.
- In the "Signature" field, add
{{subst:User:Ross Rhodes/Signature}}
. - Check the "Raw Signature" box.
- Finally, click "Save". This should now be your new signature when you add four tildes. -download | sign! 03:10, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It worked! Thank you once again. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 09:19, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- No problem; glad to help. -download | sign! 17:46, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Download. If you have any ideas on how to improve my userpages, then can you please let me know. The only things I don't want is a background colour or any pop-up thingys: like the 'say no to flagged revisions' or the floating Wikipedia logo on the left side of the page.
- It looks pretty good right now already! You could change it into a table format, with div tags... Feel free to copy my userpage or another user's userpage for that. :) -download | sign! 22:03, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing your contributions, I would really recommend adding an informative edit summary on every single one of your edits. Not only does this look good on your edit record, it could prevent your edits from being seen as vandalism. Anything as simple as (adding) or (rmv content) could work. -download | sign! 22:04, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you for pointing that out to me. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 18:48, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any subpages you think I should add? I've put in all the ones I can think of, but a Sandbox page which I'll start soon. If you have any suggestions, can you let me know.
Note: Just to say I like your 'the Force is strong in you' userbox. :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 23:01, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks! You should add a sandbox, but other than that, I can see nothing that you need. However, if you feel the urge to make one, do not hesitate to do so! :) -download | sign! 23:10, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed that you also want to become a Wikipedian administator. I just want to check, what exect to you do or get out of being an administrator? I just want to be sure that I actually do want to be one. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:30, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Administrators, commonly known as admins and also called sysops (system operators), are Wikipedia editors who have been entrusted with access to restricted technical features ("tools") which help with maintenance. For example, administrators can protect and delete pages, block other editors, and undo these actions as well. (For a more complete list, see Wikipedia:Administrators/Tools.)
- Administrators undertake additional responsibilities on a voluntary basis, and are not employees of the Wikimedia Foundation. -download | sign! 16:00, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know I ask for too many questions, though one more thing: how do I create archives? Its just, I might want to use them at some point and I don't know how to create one. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- You can either archive your talk page yourself (which gets tiring), or use a bot, MiszaBot III or ClueBot III. I personally use ClueBot III. If you plan on using ClueBot yourself as well, simply read the instructions at User:ClueBot III#Documentation. Hope that helps! -download | sign! 16:10, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The info you gave a has been useful; thanks. How do I get more people to sign my guestbook? I've signed a lot of them asking them to sign back as well if they want, though hardly any of them can, and I want to make the signature list bigger. Have you got any suggestions? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 17:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, signing other people's guestbooks and asking them to sign back is a good idea. In addition, there's a "sign!" link in your signature, so if you participated in some discussions some people might be attracted. This would certainly be a good chance to work at WP:XfD. -download | sign! 17:52, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering how I can join the Welcoming Committee, as I am very interested to. Do you know? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:00, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Of course! I am actually part of it. Simply add your name to Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/members, and you can start welcoming new users! You can also add
importScript('User:Download/Scripts/Welcome.js');
to your monobook.js to add a tab to automatically welcome members! -download | sign! 21:10, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just asking
[edit]Do I change the bit saying 'user:Download' on it to 'user:Ross Rhodes', and then that's it? I automaticcly welcome members? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:12, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Oops, my mistake. I've copied the code to User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome. Now simply add
importScript('User:Ross Rhodes/Scripts/Welcome');
to your monobook.js. -download | sign! 22:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So now I'm automaticly welcoming users? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:06, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- No, you are not. You'd need a bot to do that, which isn't recommended. Now, when you edit a user talk page, there's a tab that says "welcome". Press that and you'll automatically welcome the user. If you're looking to mass-welcome users, you could go to Special:Log/Newusers and mass-welcome there. -download | sign! 17:53, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Where?
[edit]Wheres the tab? I can't find it. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 19:39, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Alright, maybe you didn't purge your cache. First, go to User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome and press Ctrl-F5. Then go to User:Ross Rhodes/monobook.js and press Ctrl-F5 again. It should now work. -download | sign! 20:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've done what you said, though I still can't see it. It is possible for you to do it? If so, can you? 'cause I just can't get this to work. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:33, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I cannot do it, because .js pages can only be edited by you. However, you could try copying the code in User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome to User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome.js and then changing
importScript('User:Ross Rhodes/Scripts/Welcome');
toimportScript('User:Ross Rhodes/Scripts/Welcome.js');
in your monobook.js. Otherwise, I'm not sure why it isn't working. You could always manually add {{subst:User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome}} to new users' talk pages. -download | sign! 21:36, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It still didn't work. I'll just do it manually, I don't mind that. Thanks for all the help anyway! :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:20, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, you can always copy+paste. Anyways, Special:Log/Newusers is especially useful with a quick link to their talk page, as well as an "at-a-glance" sign to tell if they've probably been welcomed already: their talk page isn't red linked! -download | sign! 22:32, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I see what's wrong:
- Only add:
/* <pre> */
function welcome() {
// Find the edit box
var txt = document.editform.wpTextbox1;
//The welcome template you are wanting to use
var welcome_msg = 'User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome'
// The code to be added to the page
var tag = '{{'+'subst'+':'+ welcome_msg +'}}';
// If the edit box doesn't already have this tag...
if (txt.value.indexOf(tag) == -1) {
// Append the tag
txt.value += tag;
// Add an edit summary
document.editform.wpSummary.value = 'Welcome to Wikipedia!';
// Press the Save page button
document.editform.submit();
}
// If the tag was already there, turn the tab background red to indicate
// that the script is functioning properly, but that there is no action
// to do. This doesn't interrupt the user's work like an alert() would.
else {
document.getElementById('ca-unverified').firstChild.style.backgroundColor = "#ff4444";
document.getElementById('ca-unverified').style.backgroundColor = "#ff4444";
}
}
// Create a tab that calls this function when pressed
addOnloadHook(function () {
if(document.title.indexOf("Editing User talk:") == 0) {
addPortletLink('p-cactions', 'javascript:welcome()', 'welcome', 'ca-welcome', 'Adds a welcome note to a new user', '', '');
}
});
/* This is to keep track of who is using this extension: [[User:Nmajdan/welcome_newuser.js]] */
/* </pre> */
(note it's a bit different) to User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome.js. Then, change the monobook entry to:
importScript('User:Ross Rhodes/Welcome.js')

How do I make lists into two or three columns? I used to know but now I have completly forgotton. 'cause I want to make a list on User:Ross Rhodes/Member of WikiProject Schools into three columns. Do tyou know? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 13:55, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- You could use the the sortable wikitable as so:
{| class="sortable wikitable"<br /> !Column 1<br /> !Column 2<br /> !Column 3<br /> !Column 4<br /> |-<br /> |Row 1, column 1<br /> |Row 1, column 2<br /> |Row 1, column 3<br /> |Row 1, column 4<br /> |-<br /> |Row 2, column 1<br /> |Row 2, column 2<br /> |Row 2, column 3<br /> |Row 2, column 4<br /> |}<br />
This would produce:
Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 | Column 4 |
---|---|---|---|
Row 1, column 1 | Row 1, column 2 | Row 1, column 3 | Row 1, column 4 |
Row 2, column 1 | Row 2, column 2 | Row 2, column 3 | Row 2, column 4 |

Not that
[edit]I noticed what you've put in, but that wasn't what I used. The one above is in a table format, the one I used to have was just three columns of whatever I typed (which was a list of animals at edinburgh zoo when I used it). Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:10, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Sorry, I'm unable to answer that. Maybe you could try placing {{helpme}} on your talk page? There are a lot of table templates out there you could use, such as {{table}}. -download | sign! 18:09, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Its back now. It must have been a problem with my laptop that caused it to vanish temporarly. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 17:48, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Even if it was deleted, the deleting admin would probably place a notice on your talk page. I doubt any admin would, as Jimbo Wales approves of them and it wouldn't be speedy deleted. Best, -download | sign! 17:57, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having over 1000 edits now, I would strongly recommend you work in more collaborative areas of Wikipedia. You've been doing great with articles; however, you could also work in more collaborative areas. - Of course not. Feel free to copy any design on Wikipedia, as it's all liscenced under the GFDL. Just be sure to not impersonate Jimbo. :) -download | sign! 21:56, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created an account on Wiktionary, as I have lots of references which may come useful to helping the program expand. Feel free to look at it, I've just put a link here. Its nowhere near as good as the one on Wikipedia, but its better than most of the other Wiktionarian's userpages. Most of the ones there just have a short paragraph of information, at least mine has userboxes.
Just to know, are you my adopter as a Wiktionarian too or is just as being a Wikipedian? I don't even know if Wiktionary have an adoption thing, probably not.
If you have any suggestions for my new userpage on Wiktionary, please let me know. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 18:42, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Hmmm... This is probably because Wikipedia and Wiktionary are separate projects. For example, if a template existed on Wikipedia, it may not exist on Wiktionary or be completely different. -download | sign! 21:33, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just thought I'd mention how I've been doing the last couple of days.
On Wikipedia I've managed to start discussions on many decent articles like Vatican City and Life of Franz Liszt. It was me that created the short (and needed expanded) introduction on Life of Franz Liszt. Nobody seems to be saying much about my suggestion on Talk:Vatican City about creating a portal on the city-state though. Could you maybe help?
Still, I'm doing good on Wiktionary now too; creating many entries for words from diffrent languages. The entries I've edited or created are listed on my userpage there, which you can check out. I've been adding stuff to it recently to make it look better.
You heard about the Swine Flu going around? Its on the news and everything! I presume its on CNN or something. Only two people in Scotland had it though, and they've recovered now. How is it in the US? It seems worse there that it is in Britain. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:12, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I've seen your work, you're doing great! For creating a portal, I'd start by reading Wikipedia:Portal guidelines. A Vatican City portal should follow a similar format to the United States portal. I'd also add a link to WP:WikiProject Vatican City if it exists. As for the swine flu, there are several confirmed cases in the area I'm living in, so everyone's panicking. -download | sign! 00:34, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Guess I'm lucky then. Thanks for the portal info. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:53, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Map
[edit]I just saw your Swine Flu map on your userpage. Keep it there please, I'll use it to keep up to date on where the flu is. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:13, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I'll keep it up on my userpage while it still is at a high risk. You could also check out Image:H1N1 map.svg for updates. -download | sign! 00:34, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just wandering, if I was to create the portal for Vatican City, can I just use some of the templates used on Portal:United States? And change the colours from blue to yellow? And could you help if I need it?
If I was to do it, I'd add an introduction as well as the following sections; Selected panorama, Selected article, Selected biography, Selected location, Selected picture, Did you know?, In the news, Selected quote, Categories, Featured content, Topics, Related portals, WikiProjects, Things to do, and Vatican City on sister projects.
Note: Any in bold are sections which I'm still thinking about adding to the portal if I make it.
Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 15:46, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I'd be glad to help with the formatting. As for the content, I'd follow the same format as the United States portal, with layout. It also might be difficult to find a selected panorama for each week, but it might be possible. -download | sign! 19:09, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to occasionally check my userbox page (linked on my userpage). I do add boxes nearly everyday so people can find out more about me. You can probably find out more about me than most on that page. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:01, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have now created the portal, though since I did not have much of an idea on what I was doing, I've only managed to create the introduction section of the portal. Can you please help to get it finished? I just really think we need to make this portal. And no one else seems to want to do it. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:19, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Download. Just thought I'd mention that my score on the Wikipediholism test has increased from 9395 to 10433. That's something for me to be happy about. How's the portal going; I've not really got much time to look it up. I've only just got time to send this message. Please keep me up to date on what's going on there as I'm very keen to know what's happening.
The Swine Flu has now spreaded to some countries in Asia; including India. And confirmed cases have now been found in South Korea. This is just going to get bigger, and bigger, as well as worse. Thankfully there's no longer any cases in Scotland of the flu, though since we're on the map as the United Kingdom, the map says we do. I can't wait till Scotland wins independance. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 18:57, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- That's very cool! I'm working on the portal, and me or somebody else might want to inform Vatican City's Wikiproject about it. -download | sign! 19:17, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I've informed them, so hopefully we can get some more help with the portal. -download | sign! 19:19, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Great! The more help the better! I'll try to contribute to this, though as I said, I don't know that much about creating portals. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 20:14, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just to say, I've managed to talk to the Jimmy Wales! He's even signed my guestbook! I think that's just great. How's the portal doing? I'm not sure if the idea of merging it with Portal:Pope is working. I still think it should be separate. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:25, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Cool! The only problem is that if we don't merge the portals, we'll have some trouble finding content to display on the page. -download ׀ sign! 22:36, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
About the sig
[edit]Now your trying to get Jimbo's sig are you? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 15:00, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, I am. :) Always glad to get new signatures. -download ׀ sign! 17:44, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just to say, if you're looking for something to make major contributions to; have a look at the discussion page of Life of Franz Liszt. I just tranlated the German version of the life section of Franz Liszt on Google (even though it will have mistakes) and sent a link for people to check it out. This information could help make the article a lot better. I just thought I'd mention it to you if you wanted to make major contributions to something since hardly anyone replies to message on that talk page.
At the moment I am trying to make that article better (and hopefully featured!). Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 17:31, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- It certainly looks like a prospective featured articles. After a bit of cleanup, I'd submit it for a good article review. -download ׀ sign! 02:32, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Quick! Sign his guestbook! I was first to sign it! :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:55, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you for the info; I've signed it. :) -download ׀ sign! 02:30, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Download! Here's another update on what's going on:
Wikipedia
[edit]On Wikipedia, I've started to contribute to discussions more now; like on Life of Franz Liszt (mentioned above). I've also started a new section on Talk:Adolf Hitler, giving translations off Google Tranlate to help get more information to make the article better (and hopefully featured again). Feel free to help out there. Nobody seems to want to do that.
I've completly re-done my userbox page, which is nearly done now. I've only got to add more boxes to the Interests and tastes section. Please do have a look at that at some point. I've also started to re-do my useful links page giving much better links that it used to.
Since I have been doing some work on behalf of Jimbo; this user called Rory seems to be against me wanting to be Jimbo's 'duke', which apparently I've become according to multiple users. If that's in some way true, then cool! But this Rory guy seems a bit strange. Do you know him? You should see some of the comments made on my talk page he's written, which I happily replied to.
- I've just put a merging thingy on the Etymology of Scotland article (have a look for reasons why). 13:34, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think you're doing great on the articles; maybe you might do an article assessment for a few? Anyways, I really like your userbox page. This RoryReloaded guy seems quite strange; I'm not sure what's going on, but he could be violating WP:HARASS if he continues. -download ׀ sign! 16:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I think he was doing it for a joke. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 18:47, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- It probably is. In case you ever get harrassed/wikihounded in the future, WP:HARRASS is a handy link to remember. -download ׀ sign! 23:36, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wiktionary
[edit]I've kind of taken a little break from Wiktionary at the moment. Though I will start contributing there again on English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Mandarin, Polish and Spanish words. Some guys there don't really like me that much because of mistakes I've made. I'm new there so they should give me a bit of a break.

Just to say I have now completed the Interests and tastes section of my userbox page, so the page is now complete. Everything you need to know about me is on that page. :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:50, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have two things I'd like to mention: First of all, shouldn't we like delete or archive some of the sections on this page. Its just getting a bit long now, and I wouldn't like it shorter. Secondly, You can have a look at my Name tranlations page to find out my name in diffrent languages if you wish. Its still in construction though. That's it really. I'll give you another update if anything comes up.
I forgot, what's happening with the Vatican City portal? Not much seems to be actually happening. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:01, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- The Vatican City portal seems to be just sitting there. I'd support a merge with Portal:Pope as there aren't enough sources to get the entire portal filled. As for archiving, feel free to delete some content if you like. Happy editing! -download ׀ sign! 01:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's been over 1 month in our adoption. I've looked over your most recent contribs, and I think you're sufficiently learned about Wikipedia. Therefore, if you don't have any more questions, you're free to graduate (with an awesome adoptee barnstar of course) if you would like! If you still might have any questions in the future, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Best, -download ׀ sign! 01:45, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- P.S.: Just one more suggestion: I'd recommend you edit more pages in the WP: namespace. It's quite important, actually, that you get a good foundation in that area of Wikipedia. -download ׀ sign! 01:46, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Sure, I'll graduate. If you think I'm ready then why not. Thanks for all the help I've needed throughout my time here. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 12:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- What's this about a barnstar? I love getting barnstars!
- Here's your barnstar! You've been a great adoptee, and will be a great Wikipedian as well. -download ׀ sign! 21:00, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
