Munish Bharwaj is an Indian Director, writer, producer , theater actor-director and a well known teacher who was born on 11th December 1968. he was born in Delhi,India. Munish had been associated with theatre right from his college days and worked in theater group Chingari in delhi. While on the theater stage he immerses himself in the depth of candid expressions, behind the grueling directorial seat, he engulfs in loads of creative challenges which he artfully navigates to make poignant cinema. Later he moved to Pune to study flim direction in Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) . Munish′s debut film as a director was Moh Maya Money(2013), a saga of two lives trapped by the greed of money.

Personal Life

Munish Bharwaj was born in Delhi,India. Munish′s father Vikram Bharwaj was a businessman and his mother Kusum Bharwaj is a retired school teacher. His father died in 1983. He has one elder brother Ranjit Bharwaj. He was also a businessman and died in 2005. Munish had done his schooling from Mount Saint Mary′s School in Delhi itself. After doing his graduation in Bachelor of Commerce(B.Com) in year 1987, he did three year degree course from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) ,Delhi University. In 1991, he decided to do his post graduation in film direction and screenwriting from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. Munish is a divorcee and has no children. Munish loves to travel other then writing and directing films.

Munish, a regularly grinning individual is as straightforward as he is profoundly enthusiastic about making motion pictures. Munish Bhardwaj is the co-writer and director of the movie Moh Maya Money. This film was shot in a timespan of 7-8 months. Currently, this movie is available to watch on Hotstar and Netflix. This movie has also received a lot of love and appreciation specially because the movie is directed by a debut director.  Also, this movie is showcased in different film festivals across the cities like New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Hanoi, Vancouver, London. He was nominated for the best debut director at Zee Cine Awards and Star Screen Awardsfor Moh Maya Money. Munish Bhardwaj has co-produced a film ‘Everything is Fine’ which is a student thesis film. He is the executive producer of the movie ‘Aankhon Dekhi’ which is directed by Rajat Kapoor.It was released on 21^st march 2014.  This film won many awards in India as well as abroad. He is the Chief Assistant director in the movie ‘Kayataran’ directed by Sashi Kumar. Kayataran was shot in 2004-05. He is a casting director in the movie ‘Naukar Ki Kameez’ directed by Mani Kaul. This movie was shot in the year 1999. He is the chief assistant director in the movie ‘Char Adhyay’ directed by Kumar Shahani. This film was shot in the year 1998. He is the Chief Assistant Director in the movie ‘Hynothesis’. This film was shot in the year 1997. He is the Chief Assistant director of the movie ‘Private Detective’ which is directed by Rajat Kapoor. This film was shot in the year 1996. He is the writer, director of ‘The Tutor’ which is a 32 minutes fiction film based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s ‘crime and punishment. ‘The tutor’ was his student diplomatic film made in the year 1997.

Television

Bharadwaj has directed matters of faith, a 13 part documentary about the different faiths and religions existing together in India. The show was shot in the year 1995-96 and aired in 1996 on Doordarshan channel. He has also written and directed Indian Dance Through the Ages, a 7 part series. Each episode is based on a particular classical dance form of India. (Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kathakali,Manipuri, Kuchipuri, Mohiniattam and Chhau) The series was shot in the year 1997 and aired in the same year. The series was shot in collaboration with some of the most renowned Classical Dance Teachers and Masters of India including Birju Maharaj, Leela Samsom, Madhavi Mudgal, Aditi Mangaldas and Bharati Shivaji.

Teaching

Munish Bharadwaj has taught Under Graduate and Graduate courses at Institute of Film and Television, RAI University in the fall and winter of 2004-2005. The courses taught were Film Direction and Film Appreciation. It gives a prologue to the story and elaborates systems utilized as a part of film making with a specific end goal to further completely see how the importance is built, passed on, and interpreted in film.  One likewise explores zones and parts of film criticism like genre studies, mythic structures and postmodernism. Visiting faculty, Film Appreciation for FTII (Film and Television Institute of India, Pune) under their Skill India initiative SKIFT (Skilling India in Film and Television). He has taught Film Appreciation across various Universities in India including Kashmir University, SGT University (Gurugram), Ahmedabad University, Baba Gadge University (Amravati), Raisoni University (Nagpur) and Biju Patnaik Film and Television Institute (Bhubneshwar). He has also conducted Film Appreciation courses for General public under SKIFT at Delhi and for Indian Women’s Press Corps Visiting Faculty at State University of Performing and Visual Arts (SUPVA), Rohtak since 2017. He has written and directed degree films for graduating Acting, Camera, Editing and Sound Recording students of SUPVA.

Theatre:

Involved with theatre as an actor, director and production designer and producer with the Delhi based theatre group 'CHINGARI’ since 1987. Notable amongst the productions Mr. Bhardwaj was involved in Jean Cocteau’s The Infernal Machine (Actor), Jean Paul Sartre’s The Flies (Actor), Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs (Actor), Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (Production Manager), Jean Genet’s Deathwatch (Actor) and William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew (Actor).

He directed Moliere’s Misanthrope in 1998 with actors Mini Mathur and Rahul Vohra. The play was performed in Delhi and Mumbai.

Most recently, he acted in a devised production based on Oliver Sack’s essays The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat. The play is titled The Blue Mug and is directed by Atul Kumar of The Company Theatre. The production completed about 75 shows between 2009 to 2011. The play was performed in 6 countries including India, USA, UAE, Oman, Singapore and Brazil.

"I started out as an assistant director. I worked on Rajat Kapoor’s first feature film as an assistant. Then I assisted Kumar Shahani in Char Adhyay. These were small budget films. An assistant had to do everything. So basically we were from spot boys to chief ADs. And we had to be efficient with the meager resources. That in fact was an excellent training ground. On the one hand, we were sitting on script sessions, auditions and design meetings, and on the other we were running around for permissions and arranging food and stuff. All of this skilful and whole lot of work gave me a chance to learn. Today, I can say that I am very comfortable as a Producer but I thoroughly enjoy writing and directing." said Munish Bhardwaj in an interview to a social media website.

"Q.) Tell us first up, were you always into film-making?" He replied "Before film making, theatre happened to me. I had just joined SRCC in ’87 and there was a huge All India University Teachers Union strike which lasted for about 3 months then. It was literally a party for us students. Just out of School, college freedom and to top it, no classes to attend. A senior of mine who was also a very close friend asked me if I wanted to do some theatre. I had done a lot of school level skits and plays and I considered myself to be a good actor. He introduced me at Atul Kumar who was an acting ace. I mention him because if it were not for him, I wonder where my life would have led me.

He introduced me to a theatre group called Chingari which I joined in1988. I was a part of a festival of 3 plays, two by French playwright Jean Paul Sartre and Jean Cocteau and the third by Girish Karnad. Karnad’s play, which was translated into French. I have to confess that I had no understanding of any of these plays. The first thing that I realized when I joined the theatre group was that I was not a good actor. I got small parts in these plays but the journey on this path had well and truly begun.

I met Rajat Kapoor in 1987 (also a part of Chingari), who told me about the Film and Television Institute of India. I had no idea that it existed. My exposure to cinema was abysmal. I had grown up on a diet of Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna.

I attended a film appreciation course conducted by National Film Archives Pune in 1990 and I remember watching a film called Sant Tukaram . A 1936 B/W Marathi film by Fatehlal and Damle. It blew my mind. Some days later I saw Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali followed by Chaplin’s Gold Rush. And then Fellini’s 8 and a 1/2 was shown. I knew it then that I want to be in that world. I applied at FTII the following year and thankfully, I got selected."

Writing

Independent written work ventures for Television incorporates fiction TV indicate 'Bhanwar' (Whirlpool) in view of genuine historic point court cases in India.
