Early life

[edit]

ECHLN was born Kwetsima Maluleke on April 7, 1995, in Pretoria East, South Africa. He started making music at the age of 13 on FL Studio when he visited his cousin. In the next year, his cousin would introduced him to Propellerhead Reason, which he still uses to this day.

Career

[edit]

Maluleke started his career under the name FROST in 2008, FSR in 2009, 5th Echelon in 2010 because of his liking towards the band The Jet Age of Tomorrow and he then release 5 beat tapes within the years of 2010 and 2013 under the name Echelon. He then changed his name to 'ECHLN' in 2014 which is a shortened and stylised version of Echelon. His earliest production outside of his own work was with South African rapper Rouge and South African rapper PeadaPipper when he stayed in Pretoria, South Africa during his high school years at Christian Brothers' College, Mount Edmund between 2009 and 2013. After completing his Matric, he moved to Cape Town, South Africa to school at SAE Institute Cape Town and the would later be introduced to musician and song writer, Vuyo Renene[3]. He is now her Sound Engineer and produced one of her first songs 'Somebody' and produced her single to upcoming Love Letter's EP called 'Hi'[4] which she performed at Rocking the Daisies in 2017. He has also worked with Hunter Rose, FonZo[5], Victor Malaza and Bazz at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town [6] and Shirah Cheezer. He has released two songs called 'Step'[7] which features Angelo Quila and FonZo and 'Waiting For You'[8] which features Shirah Cheezer and released them under Singapore based record label, Darker Than Wax as singles, and would later be featured on Darker Than Wax's Compilation EP called 'Autumn Jams'[9], where he remixed IIndman's "Moment in Time"[10] song, featuring Camilla Luna. ECHLN's music has played on radio shows such as Selective Styles by Kid Fonque on 5FM, The Sinday Social by Dakruk on YFM and The Effervesce Show by Tashreeq Vardien on UCT Radio where he got interviewed and released a song with them called 'Don't Know', featuring Shirah Cheezer.

Music

[edit]

Maluleke now use Propellerhead Reason 9.5.2 to make his music, after using FL Studio and Ableton previously. He has an R&B and Dance which closely resembles artists like KAYTRANADA in the style and Pharrell Williams, who is his favourite artist and producer. A lot of his music features a four-to-the-floor drum groove with minor and major 11th chords inspired by soul and neo-soul music.
