My Therapist Says

[edit]

My Therapist Says is a Canadian media brand which came to be through a meme account on Instagram (1). Created by friends turned influencers Lola Tash and Nicole Argiris, the company publishes a blog with weekly contributions about pop culture, fashion, celebrities, and beauty (1). When the company first started, Tash and Argiris stayed anonymous, only announcing their names after two years of running the account (2). They have created multiple Instagram accounts under the My Therapist Says brand, including:

  • MyTherapistHelps
  • MyBestieSays
  • MyStyleSays

The original My Therapist Says Instagram account has 4.2 million followers and posts relatable memes daily (5).

History

[edit]

The account was created in July of 2015 and grew within months, obtaining 500,000 followers within its first five months of launching (2). The account was anonymous because owners Tash and Argiris felt they may receive criticism as females in the comedic media world (2). Two years later, on June 20th, 2017, the girls announced their names on a Cosmopolitan article. Prior to the article announcing who they were was released, Tash and Argiris would see their memes being noticed by people they knew, even ex-boyfriends and enemies, who had no clue they were behind the account (2).

Friendship

[edit]

Lola and Nicole met in 2005 in their hometown of Toronto. The best friends split apart, Lola moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting, and Nicole moving to London, Ontario to attend the University of Western Ontario and study psychology (2). Both girls have visited therapy for years and found sending memes to each other was a great way to talk about their feelings.

Content

Instagram

[edit]

On Instagram, Tash and Argiris post daily about recent news making it relatable with comedic captions. The content they post is referred to as a meme. One of their niches is telling stories through comforting, women-centric jokes, which resonate with masses (2). Once reaching 100,000 followers, the owners realized they could monetize the Instagram account and use it as a source of income (3). They have partnered with brands like Gucci and Revolve, posting sponsored content to promote their brands. Once the page's popularity grew, they realized that being anonymous was only holding them back when fans would reach out for support or advice, they wanted to be able to respond personally (3).

Blog

[edit]

Tash and Argiris created a blog following the success of their Instagram account. This blog features short articles under sections:

  • Fashion
  • This + That
  • Beauty
  • Sex + Dating
  • Health + Fitness
  • Travel
  • Wellness

Their blog features similar content to their Instagram account, however the posts are typically written pieces written either by Tash and Argiris themselves or hired interns.

Merchandise

[edit]

The founders have launched their own athleisure line, branding the apparel with some of their popular quotes. They have also mentioned writing a book, but this has not yet been released. The clothing line ranges in price between $30.00 CAD and $50.00 CAD (1).  Their hoodie that says "My Therapist Knows About You" was spotted on a Canadian tennis player, Eugenie Bouchard in a recent Instagram post (4).
