Article Evaluation

[edit]

The structure of this article, Cross-cultural Communication, is pretty clear, and it gives out a main discussion on this topic.

However, some information used to support ideas are out of date, especially those that were published in the 2000s. Additionally, though the topic is a global issue, some sections, such as Global Rise, mostly include information about the U.S. The evidence and knowledge is not widely ranged, and it doesn't give a very strong reliance.

Moreover, personally, I don't quite understand the section, Interdisciplinary Orientation. It is not well summarized and clear. It seems like that the information within could be divided or separated to other groups.

Social Media

[edit]

YouTube

[edit]

Since Kpop started to spread its industry outside South Korea, YouTube has always been the place where Kpop records can be tracked. Gangnam Style, the iconic song sung by Psy, until Oct. 3rd of 2018, has been viewed by 3.2 billion times on YouTube. Then, BTS, a recent group with the most overseas success, made 43.2 million views for one video within 24 hours this August. This number broke the record that Taylor Swift made.[1] In the case of girl groups, the band called TWICE, has made the achievement of a 400-million-times viewed music video in 2016. On the 17th of September of 2016, at the time of 1:56 p.m., TWICE’s song, “TT,” which video was full of Halloween elements, reached the number of 400 million on Youtube. This record was made about 1 year and 10 months after the music video was released. Because of this, TWICE became the second Kpop band to achieve a milestone on YouTube. The first group was BTS, who had two songs with 400 million views before TWICE, which are “DNA” and “Fire.”[2]

Twitter

[edit]

As the internet, technology and electronic devices have been developed and spread, Twitter has expanded its industry and impact at a large scale. It is a Social Networking Service, or SNS, which provides a stream of messages with the maximum word count of 140. It is also a platform for cultural products to be produced, shared, and spread through people’s various contributions. Gangnam Style, the icon of Kpop that made its way to the United States and other global areas, benefited from Twitter since it was tweeted for 18,000 times. From this, it is revealed that Twitter has a strong influence on how cultural products can be promoted in the modern times. In conclusion, Twitter is one of the biggest digital tools nowadays that reboots discussions and communications under the context of cultural product industry.[3]

Similar to YouTube, Twitter has also been a significant social media platform for Kpop stars to get connections and promotions. Bang Si Hyuk, the producer of BTS, claimed the fast growth of their fanbase strongly relied on Twitter, on which they are able to post their moments and share with the world.[4] In 2017, BTS is the most tweeted-about artist in the United States and across the globe as well. Along with BTS, there are celebrities who are well known in the U.S., such as Justin Bieber and Harry Styles. In the global top 10 list , other Kpop groups, such as SEVENTEEN and Monsta X showed up as well. EXO, a South Korean boyband, is announced to be the most followed celebrity that entered Twitter in 2017.[5] According to Sin Chang Seob, the CEO of Twitter Korea, the usage of Twitter by Kpop artists has led to a massive increase on the number of South Korean and international users. Matters related to Kpop often attract the fandom to discuss actively.[6]
